Changes Vs West Coast Eagles

I watched Jay Schulz run around in the VFL at Casey one day and not touch it. The footy was messy and did not suit a forward like him.
A year later he went to a club that believed in him and backed him in
Schulz was an inconsistent kid at Richmond. He also nearly lost us the TAC sponsorship.
He grew up. It happens
Making an assumption that it’s as because Port believed in him is pure supposition

With Young out, it will be interesting who our back 7 are.
Broad, Grimes, Balta, Vlastuin, Rioli and Baker have been named back with Short and Ralphsmith on the bench. either of those as the 7th will mean a lot of speed.
Other alternative is Baker goes forward and they both play back- again thats a backline full of run.

Been too tall all year down back ILO.

Reckon we shape better with Young out and everyone stepping up a rung then including another runner.

The slow static use coming out by too many talls has played a role in our diabolical turnovers.

Grimes and Broad cant quite cover the turf they used to and are better suited using their nouse on bigger opponents.

Grimes in particular isn't the intercept beast he was, so if not intercepting, let him lock down and get more run. We need it.

I think Broad still covers the ground really well Leysy but Grimes has definitely slowed

True and it limits Grimes ability to play on smalls like he used to.

Let's play him as a key back and get another runner back there.

They might be reticent with Nank out, who would help cover the high ball dropping back, but definately worth a try considering our lack of run and amount of turnovers coming from defensive 50 ATM.

Assuming that Soldo is not injured and the change is weather related tactical then I would have thought that Miller would have been a better change and we keep a bona-fide ruck but what do I know.
The oppo doesn't have a bona fide ruck either.

Thought our ruck line-up was too tall. Good move to replace Soldo with Cumbo.

Not Broad, but his suspension and bringing Young in effectively unbalanced us. Agree too tall. Broad has capability to run, bat short or bat tall.
Better balance now for sure

I would suggest (hope) it’s a preventative / management issue with Soldo. The surface at Marvel would be harder than other surfaces as well.

Hopefully he’s back in the following week
yeah agree.
its pretty common for players to come back from injury and pull up sore, miss a week and go again.
Nothing to get upset about yet, unless Henny Penny is a friend.

Miller clearly keeps his place on the basis of team balance, Young out, Miller stays.

Interesting question there from K3, are our players learning?

We all know that different people learn in different ways, I figure the conclusion is that Miller is being given chances as more likely to learn with positive reinforcement, maybe they conclude Cumberland is the opposite, or maybe it is just what he needs to learn is not supported by giving him games when he does not perform.

That said, in a week when the VFL is not playing I would have the youngsters in. WCE are not playing well and have a big injury list, could get some confidence into our players. I would persist with Cumberland and at least have him as sub - here Noah, you're sub, now prove us wrong.

I don't get the Ralphsmith selection. Put him in the VFL (ok, not this week) and tell him to attack the ball and get involved, prove you can get your body over the ball and are willing to plough in to win the ball and you get another chance.

Dow has been playing well in the VFL, he can't do any more than that. I have my doubts but he has clearly improved, give him a shot. I would definitely pick Dow over Ralphsmith.

Ross should not be allowed on the wing, if you play him, put him in the middle, too slow as a wing.

If they are going to move Pickett away from the wing, how about into the middle. I reckon Pickett can be a decent defensive forward, but he is a better wing and I reckon a better centre.

All in all a bit baffling. I'll be there but I want to see more system and more application than I saw last week.

DS
I'm interested to see Dow play this year but would like to see him have a run of dominant games at VFL beforehand. He did play well last week. \
But with Graham and Prestia back its hard to select Dow.

And how about a bit of consistency regarding your call on Ralphsmith?
He played VFL last week, by reports attacked hard. So he gets another chance.
Both Dow and Ralphsmith in the bests. You want Dow in because he's doing well in the 2s and ask Hugo to do the same.

My sister when I told her Soldo is out: "Bugger. He’s a fragile little daisy" :ROFLMAO:

The thing is that Dow and Ralphsmith are different players. One is a clearance mid and the other is a flanker, either wing or HBF.
For that reason I don’t think it was a choice in selection between the two but as I said in an earlier post on selection if Hugo is going to play wing I would have preferred to give Banks a run.

As long as he's not rotating through the HBF I'm ok with it. Prefer Banks on the wing, but hoping Hugo plays a bit further up the ground, that small forward role seems a good option for him.
