Changes v the Cats

Allan kicked 2 of his 4 goals against Balta. 1 was on the lead from a centre clearance, the other Balta was on the ground in the goal square while Allan marked 30mtrs away- hard to see why Balta was out of the contest. To me Balta is a FB. He will make some mistakes, and get out marked occasionally, but he will also out mark his opponent and spoil plenty.
He will take Hawkins, and Broad/Grimes will take Cameron.
Dimma likes to stick with his first call even when the player if messing up. But it is interesting that Balta spent the whole of last years pre-season training as a forward where he was doing pretty well in the trial matches. As I recall he then went back mainly because of injury to team mates? That move also coincided with the departure of Astbury, which has proven to be something of a watershed as far as our defence is concerned.

The forward line is simply not functioning without Lynch. That is not Jacks fault but remember the clubs perspective with Jack and Cotch. Jack stayed on to be part of a tilt at another Flag. Realistically that objective is gone.

Lynch absent. Jack at 34 is doing his best, but he is well past his 2017 skillset.
Balta should be sent forward.

Broad will cover Cameron. Balta to Hawkins but he better be switched on.

And again to Posh, in regard to the popular view on Cumberland, he has lost confidence. The skills are still in place but not his belief. IMO he needs to know that he is part of our best team and that those around him believe that. Ralphsmith, Masell, Ross and Dow have been tried and will improve but the greater imperative as far as 2023 is concerned his restoring Cumberland's belief that he is a league quality forward, with a premiership medallion a part of his future.

His confidence without doubt is at rock bottom and the 50 wasn't there (he ran to the ump in the middle of the field - who paid it - to ask why and the ump was gesturing that he moved his leg - if thats all it takes for a 50 then thats an absolute joke).

However, confidence shouldn't be affecting effort as much as it is. Sure when with the ball, he may take safer options if low on confidence, but does there appear to be little effort being put on. He was trailing his man the entire game. I just cannot see how you can reward that sort of effort by keeping him in the team

That 50 against cumbo was possibly the most insane 50 ever paid .Could you ever imagine that being paid if it was dongerfield, or Gawn ? Not in a million years..Then 3rd quater gets dragged ,fair enough ...but this kids being destroyed / shattered....love to see him destroy the cats ....

A stint back in the VFL and kick a few goals would be good for his confidence. From the outside it's looks they are destroying his confidence. I hope they are putting their arms around him .
Dimma did the same thing to Shai early on. I was always worried he'd spit the dummy and go back to WA.

Geelong have given us one or two terrible hidings in the past with one about 12 yers ago at Marvel being memorable for all the wrong reasons. They are in great form and if we play anything like our first half today we could find ourselves behind by by 100+!

Despite today’s win and the threat of a hiding next week there has to be a response by the MC to that pathetic first half.
Like Cotch a week ago, Jacks performance was just sub par,
and I would leave him out against the cats. Ralphsmith like Jack did one or two things in the second half but not enough to hold their places. Mansell just a no also.
Havn’t been a fan of Miller or Ross recently but would keep them in although Miller may miss if big Evan is available.
Miller’s second half much more impressive.

For some time now Balta has looked out of place as a defender and, as I have argued before, I think he is a natural forward. In any event he is no match for Hawkins in his current form, and without Jack and Lynch at the moment, imo he should move forward. Grimes to half back. Broad Vlastuin and Young to play across the backline.

In Bauer and Young
Out Mansell Ralphsmith and Riewoldt

B Vlastuin Broad Young
HB Short Grimes Rioli D,
C Bolton Hopper Ross
HF Cumberland Graham Prestia
F Pickett Balta Baker
R Ryan Martin Taranto
I/C Bauer Clarke McIntosh and Miller
Sub Cotchin.
Haven't watched the replay yet, saving that for a lazy Sunday arvo veg. Reckon Jaaack played a solid team game yesterday, did a lot of hands and knees dirty, grub work in the contests and under packs to just try and get some ball to team mates. Our ball use first qtr and early in the third was bloody ordinary and didn't help our forwards at all.

Not sure I'd make any changes.

Cotch probably comes in as in the past has loved playing the Cats( in finals especially) but the midfield functioned as well as it has all year in his absence.

Probably Young comes back in but again the backline looked much more assured.

That said it was against the lowly Eagles. The Cats will be a much, much tougher opponent.

One thing for sure we do not want a repeat of our last outing against the Cats umpiringwise. 26 frees to 13 in their favour.

Cumberland out for a while would be a mistake of Titanic proportions.

Young? He could hardly have done more.

Selwood adjudicated most of those decisions, so the balance should swing back to us you’d think

Not sure we missed Young.

And surely Dow at least deserves a chance in front of the Tivendale/Hyde mob.

I think we,re a chance v the Cats if we:

stop handballing and kicking the ball 2 metres over the teammates head.
stop wildly high bombing the ball into the forward 50 allowing the oppo defence to pick it off easily.
stop fumbling the ball.
kick straight for goal.
