Changes v GWS

For all the chicken littles ...

Last time we played GWS, admittedly at the MCG :cupgold, this was our side:

David Astbury Nathan Broad Dylan Grimes
Bachar Houli Nick Vlastuin Jayden Short
Brandon Ellis Dion Prestia Josh Caddy
Daniel Rioli Trent Cotchin (c) Kane Lambert
Jason Castagna Tom Lynch Jack Riewoldt
Toby Nankervis Shane Edwards Dustin Martin
Shai Bolton Ivan Soldo Liam Baker Marlion Pickett
Coach: Damien Hardwick

We have just seven players missing from that day. Putting quality and the fact most are midfielders to one side, that is not a large turnover from then until now.

Then consider the fact that since the 2019 grand final, the following four players have become locks in the side:

Noah Balta, Kamdyn McIntosh, Jack Graham and Jake Aarts.

And the following three players have played multiple games this season, each justifying their selection:

Rhyan Mansell, Riley Collier-Dawkins and Jack Ross.

For me, it becomes simple.

IN: Grimes, Caddy
OUT: Bolton, Edwards

Stack, Martyn or Naish as the injury sub.

Do this and we win the game in a canter.

A realistic post.

But Aarts will retain his spot, as will George and Dan... we need mature bodies on deck even if they are in stinking form. Mansell and Edwards out for Grimes and Hugo I reckon.
There is always a reason not to give a kid a (fresh) start except where there isn’t.
Time for CJ, (Grimes), MRJ and Stack, for Bolton, Castagna, Edwards, Houli and Naish, with Bachar to sub.
See it as a Pickett moment.

B Astbury Balta Grimes
HB Broad Vlastuin Short
C McIntosh Pickett Baker
HF Rioli D, Riewoldt Collier-Dawkins
F Lynch Martin Aarts
R Nankervis Graham Ross
I/C Cameron-Jones, Mansell, Rioli M and Stack
Sub Houli.

I'd say in Grimes and CCJ personally.

We have a lot of injuries and now, in the middle of the season, is the time to use the young players we have.

As long as Mansell is ok, he stays. RCD stays. Jack Ross stays (he is the one I'm least convinced about, but, he is young and needs a proper go).

A tall forward line, with a lot more movement by the talls, could stretch GWS. Combine this with a solid defence and we can win this. It is at the indoor s***hole so 3 marking forwards is a good option. You can't kick goals from the centre, defend one end and attack at the other while Pickett and Graham make life hard in the middle.

Let's go.

We now are facing two huge games against top sides with a decimated midfield.
What a difficult draw we have. Just look at what teams we have had to face over the last few weeks.
Now without Shai and possibly even Rioli.
Who will stand up for us a centre bounces and throw ins?

IN:Grimes/CJ & Ralphsmith
Out:Sheds/Bolton & Ross

Can't have 2 speedsters out & only one coming in.
Hence Mansell stays and Ross out.

Ok we’ve lost class in midfield with Edwards and Bolton out. Time to bring in some more spark into the team with Ralphsmith and Dow. Need to pull Baker out of the flanks and into the midfield. So Ralphsmith replaces Baker in the forward line and Dow replaces Edwards. Need to find a way for CCJ to come into the team. Aarts has to go to make room. Castagna comes to the wing, Pickett into midfield. Grimes back in the team means a defender needs to make way. Probably Mansell unfortunately.

Out: Edwards, Bolton, Mansell, Aarts
In: Ralphsmith, Dow, Grimes, CCJ

You've got Aarts coming in rather than out :)

Aarts won't be dropped, it's all mature hands and bodies on deck. Don't think Mansell will be dropped either for the same reason, it's his 5th game or something but that's still better than 1 or 0 games.

Agree Dimma won’t bring in CCJ and Aarts will stay.

If they don't pick CCJ now he will be actively looking for a contract elsewhere.

Can't fit him in? When can they fit him in then?

These ne t 2 games will define the season .

Win them & the rest will *smile* themselves.

Thinking about this reckon no way George gets dropped. When Dimma needs increased effort and intensity, George is one of the guys he turns to.

very short on inside clearance players now with Dusty, Graham, Pickett and Ross having to do the bulk of the heavy lifting. May need to bring in Caddy or move Vlaustin in there.

Will be interesting to see what Dimma does here

Need a second ruck and would like to see CCJ in but Dimma will double down on run, intensity and field coverage. This is what he always does.

Think he'll bring in an extra runner and perhaps move Mansell as a defensive fwd.

Out Bolton, Edwards,
In Grimes, Ralphsmith

Ok with Bolton out you need to re assess

I reckon Bolton Edwards Castagna out Caddy Stack and Grimes in. Load up on tough dour defenders and inside mids. We've lost outside run but we are at Marvel. Let's go to Richmond 101 - territory and forward pressure. Short to the wing, baker in the mid rotation. Caddy and Graham to change forward.

Broad Grimes Astbury
Flossy Balta Mansell
Kmac Pickett Short
Rioli Aarts Stack
Jack Lynch Graham
Nank Caddy Martin

Int: (mid rotation) Baker Ross RCD Houli

Can Vlastuin play mid?

No we tried that before and he was lost and played well below his standard.

The players who could come out of the defensive setup are Balta to Ruck / forward or Broad to a wing / forward.

Baker could go into the middle and I reckon he would do really well there.

We need Pickett to play inside mid or wing, no more time in the ruck. Also need another tall option up forward.

In: Grimes and CCJ
Out: Edwards and Bolton.

GWS will be licking their lips about taking us on.
But, there's nothing more dangerous than a tiger with its back to the wall

If Caddy doesn’t get a game this week he might as well nominate for the mid season draft.

Just saw a repay of Mumford dropping the knees into Merrett. What a weak *smile* he is. They use the word tough but there’s nothing tough about most of the stuff he does. He’s a classic sniping *smile*.

Yep, it's a common retort here but imagine if Tom Lynch did this 12 months ago.
