Changes for Round 3.

JR's thumb is infected so no guarantee to play. Also means he will not be able to hitchhike to the Fox studios or pull a plum out of a Christmas pie.

If you had said, at the start of this year, that we would have incorporated four regular new players as first 22, Gibcus, Hugo, Parker and Dow, people would have said that you were nutty in the first place.
It is a testament to our great team.
Our great coaching staff, assistants and recruiters.
Like Trent says, the game evolves year to year and resilience is the key.

If its badly infected he should probably sit out this week.

But he would probably be on anti biotics and likely given till Sunday to see how it is.

When was the last time Riewoldt was named on the extended interchange bench? 2007?

Won’t play.

Does Gibcus get dropped from the backline when Vlastuin comes back in?
He’s the obvious choice but could they move Broady somewhere further up the ground?
Gibcus hasn’t done a lot wrong but won’t keep Vlossy out.
Reckon they’ll play Tarrant all season so there’s limited spots available.
Good problem to have.

The reality is that Hugo, Josh, Matt P and Dow have all eclipsed RCD as first 22.
At best he is a "top-up" player from the VFL ranks.
He can pursue new horizons at other clubs in future.
The reality is we have played 2 games. there is lot more footy to be played before we decide who is out the door.
the other reality is of those 4 he is really only competing with Dow for a spot in the 22, maybe Parker.

I reckon they might drop a wing or forward rather than Gibcus, so we'll play the 7 defenders like we used to do.

It'll be something like:

B/ Gibcus, Tarrant, Broad
HB/ Vlastuin, Grimes, Short
7th/ Rioli

C/ McIntosh, Cotchin, Pickett
HF/ Edwards, Balta, Bolton
F/ Baker, Lynch, Riewoldt
R/ Nankervis, Prestia, Martin (if the great man comes back otherwise Ross or Dow)
Int/ Soldo, Graham, Castagna

emg/ Ralphsmith, Ross, Dow, Parker

- Lambert still has to get back into this side, but at whose expense?
- Are we too top-heavy with two rucks plus three tall forwards? We lose the run of an extra midfielder and it's a shame to see Ralphsmith out of the side. Do we put Balta back in place of Gibcus to let the latter continue his development at VFL level, and just rely on Jack and Tom up forward, with the ability to still swing Balta forward if there aren't too many gorillas to guard? This allows us to bring one of the emergencies back into the side.

Really not sure on the ideal makeup anymore, but in a lot of ways that's a good problem to have.
