Changes against Collingwood.

I don't think getting Tarrant was a mistake, everyone must remember that Gibcus making it to our pick was seen as extremely unlikely during trade period.

Things changed and we rightly had to take him.

plus grimes could pull a hammy in a prelim,

and robbie tarrant comes in and treats that pasty tasmanian vegan like hes

a lump of soy protein

We look heaps better with Tarrant out, Balta back, Soldo in, Short as a midfielder and MRJ up forward

Good creative team selection

Ross cant be counted as an out. He was the sub.

Also every one but a few suggest either or both RCD and Stacky will go.
But I don't see how you can build and encourage confidence in development players, if you are to bring on youngsters stuck for 4-5 weeks in the VFL and doing well there, and immediately send them back after a 109 point win.
Both seemed to play their role and did well, not brilliantly but well.
Momentous post M.

Managing the minutes of our ageing champs will help ensure the kids get decent game time. Critical in their development.

RCD, Stacky and MRJ stay in.

Ins: Trent, Dusty, Marlion
Outs: Shane (omitted managed) Kane (managed) Dion (injured)

That would be a smart move both for the short and long term.

I think the team is much improved from having the talent of Stack in the side.
The coach / MC have given him some tough love, time to improve his fitness, and development in the 2's as a small forward.
Finally, in R7, he got his chance as a deep small pressure forward.
The ball kept going over his head and around him but when in his vicinity he did his job, with non-statistical pressure acts leading to at least two team goals, apart from the handball to MRJ running into goal.
I don't think that small forward position is ultimately the best use of his skills but its the starting point for re-entry into the 1's and so we'll take it.
The ethos of giving young players time to find their feet and confidence in the seniors should not only equally apply to Stack, but assuming he continues to do what is asked of him off the field and during the week, he should be prioritised over RCD, Dow, Ross and the like because of his greater talent / higher ceiling / ability to positively impact the team in the longer term.

The move of Short into the middle completely changed the dynamic of what has been one of the more dysfunctional mid-fields this year (missing Dusty and Dion).
We have had gallant warriors Cotch and Shedda in their last year unable to keep up with opponents from midway through the third, mixed in with juniors in RCD (jury in), Dow (project player who may impact from 2024 onwards) and Ross (low ceiling), and it hasn't been effective.
Prestia is obviously so important but on last night's viewing (admittedly v the witches hats) Short appears to have the aerobic capacity to run out four quarters and most importantly the foot skills to be damaging with the ball in hand.
Shorty teaming up with Cotch at centre bounces rather than RCD / Dow should be highly complimentary.

MRJ added the manic pace and Jaws-music forward pressure required, teams well with his fellow forward pressure brothers, and should stay in.
Prestia is the query for Saturday, and Marlion the other automatic inclusion when fit.
The backline looks balanced and settled; loved seeing Bakes and Balta back - no way Tarrant should come back in with the Pies set-up.
Assuming Prestia is fit and Marlion isn't, for me its...

In: Cotch, Dusty.
Out: RCD, Ross.

100% Shorty into the middle was inspired.

he found space and his ball use was surgical.

I gave him 4 votes.

but lets not get carried away.

his centre square match up for much of the night was WAFL player Connor West, and the ball only went one way.

Shorty was essentially playing a HBF on a half pitch.

Throw shorty into the middle against Oliver, Petracca, Gawn and Viney,

and it would be very ugly indeed.

again, great coaching to throw him in there last night, and close to a BOG performance

Agree that its a small sample size of one game vs the as mentioned witches hats, and the diminutive Shorty's tackles don't tend to stick.
But to me the change in dynamic is less about who Shorty matched up on, and more about who we can pair him up with:
"Shorty teaming up with Cotch at centre bounces rather than RCD / Dow should be highly complimentary."
Cotch is the bullbar who's tackles DO stick, and he can get it out to an elite distributor.
Cotch and RCD and or Cotch and Dow hasn't and will continue to not work.

Shorty’s also got pace and a long kick. Something the youngsters don’t have.

Disagree. Recruiting 32 year olds is always a mistake.

Both seemed to play their role and did well, not brilliantly but well.

The Match Cttee deserve a lot of credit for that win.
Both moves were experimental from a c'ttee not so good at it, in this post stand rule period.
Hopefully this success will breed a willingness to consider more of the same.
it's a move by the MC that many on here would agree could have been put into place last season when it was clear we weren't going that well.
it would've got more games into the likes of RCD Stack Ross Dow etc etc..
I'm glad it happened now, and look what happened.
Fresh energy! who woulda thunk it?
I hope they stick with the philosophy, or at least circle around it.
despite what they think older players are owed or whatever. no offence intended.

In: Cotchin, Martin (how do you get to say that after a 109 point win?!?!)

Out: RCD, Castagna.

Even though George played as well as he can. Good game from him but.....

In: Cotchin, Martin.

Seriously though,

In: Cotchin, Martin.

I can't say it enough.

I really, really, really, really, really hope I don't see Tarrant on the team sheet next week.

But it makes me nervous.
out Castagna?

did you actually watch the game?

if you did, and are not merely trotting out your tiresome obsession yet again, then I suggest following a sport you know more about.

Could the inclusion of Stack and MRJ be the new dynamic trio of Castagna, Butler and Rioli?

Yes. We had the 3 amigos in 2017, Higgo added in 2018....two seasons we were electric in attack but then all stopped when Lynch arrived in 2019. At least we won the 2 flags but we still need small forwards to be as lively in attack instead of expecting Tom and Jack to take marks and goal everytime.
