Captain 2022

Congrats to both but I do not like co skippers. One ship one skipper. Skipper down vice takes over. I would have liked Jack but maybe he declined.

I'm not a co-captain enthusiast either. But one thing we can say. Nank and Grimesy are the perfect co captain duo. Both selfless, team first, hurt opposition, win at all costs players. Richmond men. Neither's ego will get in the way of the other.

Let's see how it goes.

Can't say I'm a fan of co-captains, but there you go, there must be good reasons for this.

We had a lot of players to choose from, Nank and Grimes I am happy with.

It does make me think they co-captain for a few years and then Nank on his own but we'll see.

Will be interesting to see who gets VC.

I haven’t really put a lot of thought into the co captain philosophy,

But it is becoming more popular across different sports so I put faith that the idea must have merit and the club has thought long and hard about it before making the decision.

I’m against co-captains. I mean, how awkward is it gonna be with 3 people trying to hold up a cup with 2 handles this September?

Easy ... Nank takes Dimma in one arm and Grimesy in the other and they hold the cup aloft, hoisting it into the footy heavens for all 2022 tigers to see and adore.

What are we calling the Co Captain?

Grank?

I’m not a huge fan of the co captain concept but willing to keep an open mind.

Awesome choice!

Modern Times Modern Choice...old fashioned footballers.
I knew someone here had used the word modern. I agree

I feel a lot of us have been thinking ‘captain’ in the traditional sense. But when you look at it from a ‘leadership’ perspective - and I’m tipping many here have done leadership programs - you start to come around to this being deeper than the old fashioned skipper role And not a bad call.

and we have several potential captains because they have been training to be leaders for several years now in the program. That’s what a good business does to prepare for for succession planning and to provide a career path and be an employer of choice.

Some possible thought processes (and we can’t know this without going through it with them because each process yields unique results) -
- leaderships styles of which there are roughly 7, pose the question which style are you and which is best for ’now’. The answer is typically that you have a sweet spot but you’ll need to find a way to use all of them from time to time given the circumstance. This is pretty difficult for one person to manage. The days of being one type of leader are gone (for a modern organisation).
- the step of having to replace Cotchin actually showed that regardless of the quality of available leaders, there is a degree of uncertainty in arriving at a replacement. This model provides potential to transition leaders thought a co role in the future. eg Grimes retires, Nank remains and another co cap is elevated. And so on. It may not happen like that, but it provides a platform for that, or go back to old vice captain model or whatever. I think it shows good flexibility and the potential stability and continuity during change. I think that’s a mature approach from the club.
- the coaching roles have evolved like this over the years. Why not the captain? We might end up having line captains and a head captain. Who knows? If this translates to a team ahead of the game, then why wouldn’t you think about that sort of framework?
- the club has provided a professional leadership development environment and this is one of the outcomes. I’ll take this over the old days of looking around thinking ‘We have no one who is really captain material‘.
- finally, and this is a bit of a throwaway line, it’s an appropriate nod to Cotchin who has been such a great captain that it’s taken two blokes to replace him! If I was him I’d be dining out on that forever!
