Awesome choice!
Modern Times Modern Choice...old fashioned footballers.
I knew someone here had used the word modern. I agree
I feel a lot of us have been thinking ‘captain’ in the traditional sense. But when you look at it from a ‘leadership’ perspective - and I’m tipping many here have done leadership programs - you start to come around to this being deeper than the old fashioned skipper role And not a bad call.
and we have several potential captains because they have been training to be leaders for several years now in the program. That’s what a good business does to prepare for for succession planning and to provide a career path and be an employer of choice.
Some possible thought processes (and we can’t know this without going through it with them because each process yields unique results) -
- leaderships styles of which there are roughly 7, pose the question which style are you and which is best for ’now’. The answer is typically that you have a sweet spot but you’ll need to find a way to use all of them from time to time given the circumstance. This is pretty difficult for one person to manage. The days of being one type of leader are gone (for a modern organisation).
- the step of having to replace Cotchin actually showed that regardless of the quality of available leaders, there is a degree of uncertainty in arriving at a replacement. This model provides potential to transition leaders thought a co role in the future. eg Grimes retires, Nank remains and another co cap is elevated. And so on. It may not happen like that, but it provides a platform for that, or go back to old vice captain model or whatever. I think it shows good flexibility and the potential stability and continuity during change. I think that’s a mature approach from the club.
- the coaching roles have evolved like this over the years. Why not the captain? We might end up having line captains and a head captain. Who knows? If this translates to a team ahead of the game, then why wouldn’t you think about that sort of framework?
- the club has provided a professional leadership development environment and this is one of the outcomes. I’ll take this over the old days of looking around thinking ‘We have no one who is really captain material‘.
- finally, and this is a bit of a throwaway line, it’s an appropriate nod to Cotchin who has been such a great captain that it’s taken two blokes to replace him! If I was him I’d be dining out on that forever!
