Bye Bye Jack Higgins!

A shocking tackler and very slow. Only the fact he has footy smarts saves him. Needs to be dropped. Give Naish a go.

Would love to see him get some more midfield time. That’s where he really started to go into his own towards the back end of ‘18.

He will not be dropped he is the love child of Hardwick.

I would’ve thought if there was a Hardwick love child , it would be Dan Rioli , and we know what happened there

It got to nearly half time and I suddenly realised to myself "where the heck is Higgins" and "maybe he's injured". I looked around the field and yes, there was Higgins out there. He had only 3 or 4 possessions in the entire first 3 quarters and no impact at all. He salvaged his game stats somewhat in the last quarter with 8 possessions. Like so many RFC supporters think, it was an incredibly disappointing game from him.

There was a story about Higgins in the pre season in one of the news programs. The story told that Higgins was doing extra training outside of the club with a professional running coach. Higgins stated that he was determined to keep improving himself and his running. It all sounded and looked great. However, having watched him closely over the last few weeks, he appears on the face of it to be somewhat heavier and slower than last year. He seems to be more workman like in the way he goes about his football this year compared to last year, which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, I am mystified as to what has happened to his spark, his exuberence, his excitement and his joy of playing that he had last year. He rarely smiles on the field these days. It just seems that one or more of the coaches may have told him in the pre season to pull his head in or to cool his jets when it comes to the spark, exuberence, excitement and joy side of things. Maybe he did need to reign things in a bit but I really miss the "old" Higgins. The RFC needs at least a few extroverts out there on the field.

Early in the last quarter, Higgins gained possession of the ball in our forward pocket a few metres in from the boundary line. He attempted to do a low precision pass to a team mate in a better position. It may not have even been a 15 metre pass. Arguably he did the team orientated and unselfish thing by passing instead of trying to kick a goal. The pass was intercepted by NM and they cleared the ball out of their defence and soon after they kicked a goal. Personally I was very disappointed that he didn't have a crack at kicking the goal by hooking the ball around his body. I thought that realistically it was a gettable goal from the position that he was in and given his ability/skill level. Maybe his natural instincts around goal have been curtailed somewhat this year as part of pulling his head in. If he had kicked that goal, it could have given the RFC the spark and excitement we needed to maybe mount a big comeback in the game.
