Bye Bye Jack Higgins!

Anyone do a comparison of Stephenson and Higgo as far as stats go? I thought Higgo showed more. Do they take team motivation and creativeness into account?

I thought Ronke and Rayner should have more votes....who's Alex Witherden?

Final votes

52 Jaidyn Stephenson (Coll)
42 Tom Doedee (Adel)
32 Alex Witherden (Bris)
11 Jack Higgins (Rich)
10 Jack Henry (Geel), Ollie Florent (Syd)
4 Cameron Rayner (Bris)
2 Ben Ronke (Syd)
1 Aaron Francis (Ess), Ed Richards (WB)

Rayner is undersold in that voting. I would take him ahead of all the others.

Not totally sold on the concept. First year players competing with other who have senior AFL pre seasons under their belt including professional personalised coaching doesn't sit well with me.

Don't think the voting is about upside, it's about performance in 2018. For my money Doedee should have received the award given he carried far greater responsibility throughout the year, arguably better than Lever when he was at the Crows.

No votes for Naughton. :p

Interestingly Higgins is the second best first year player, that's a fair assessment in my opinion.

True that.

Fair enough.

There’s the rising star (Jaidyn Stephenson) and the best first year player (Tim Kelly). To have an award that’s totally “apples and apples” you’d need 5 or so different awards. .

is that the current criteria? i had a look at one point but couldnt find anything.

the award used to be a mix of performance, potential, and any other undescribed criteria the judges wanted to use. it may have changed at some point.

Was talking specifically about the Rising Star. Not sure why you can play 9 senior games and have multiple pre seasons against a fresh draftee who is new to the senior AFL system in every shape and form.
The first year player award is completely different whereby each team nominates one player and is usually won by mature age players.
Why are you suggesting there be a further category?

I understand what you’re saying. I didn’t suggest further categories I said if you want to compare apples and apples you’d need more categories.

The year Lewis Taylor won was all about his performance that given year, Bont came in second but few would have argued that he was the best talent in the field.

The good thing about Higgins is his overall performance at different positions. His hard running, playing forward, mid and running in the backline.
This will help him greatly for the future.

He'll be one to watch this evening. Get the sense Higglett is the type of bloke to really turn it up a notch for the occasion of finals. Will thrive on the extra atmosphere and intensity.

Great achievement by Snags for making it into a finals team in his first year like the other Jack before him.

Kudos to steviecal from twitter for this: :hihi

I have a feeling that two of our Jacks will have some shut down roles tonight.

And by shutdown, I mean the following

Destroy their opponent, with a barrage of tackles, second efforts.
20+
2 Goals
