The last thing we need to do is to get on our knees to keep players who don't really want to be here. Not at all saying this is the case with Brett......just simply a blanket rule for the future!

The only reason they dont want to be here is if you've mishandled them. The well-managed teams don't lose their best players. The only noted ones of recent times have been Ottens (well done Tigers) and West Coast with Judd - who lets face it were a rabble with the Cousins (and other) affair.

Agreed. How much do you throw at them to repair the damage?

IMO tis best to start a fresh with a group if guys that really want to play for the coach, the jumper and each other!

Re: Brett Deledio

Lets not be too naieve here and forget that many are motivated by money. Can't blame them at all
once your around 30ish your not wanted but the money you make is your security for the future. All
this "play for the jumper stuff" is *smile* IMO

But not quite as laughable as having Newman as captain. (Obviously I refer to Newman as captain in the sense he has that title, rather than him showing anything to indicate that he is the captain)

agree Mav, newman not much chop for my liking just like the plodder Johnson who was on auto pilot at the best of times...

As much as i cannot stand wallace for what he did to our club Newman should not of asked him to stand down as coach, any decent captain which had concerns on behalf of the playing group shouldve approached Wright or March to discuss the matter at length and let them sit wallace down to thrash out player complaints...IMO he shouldve been stripped immediately from his duties as captain, would rather Cuz as captain next year and in 2 years hand it over to Lids or Cotchin, but Cotchin will still be 21 perhaps a tad to young but then again who knows how much he'll mature in the next 2 yrs....

Re: Brett Deledio

Thankyou Brett for playing so spiritedly despite lack of effort from your teammates. Please don't leave.

Re: Brett Deledio

The scary thing about Lids is that I reckon he's been by far our best player the last few weeks but is probably only playing at 85% effort.

Re: Brett Deledio

28 possies, 71% eff, 9 tackles, 6 clearances

Newman would dream of a game like that.

Re: Brett Deledio

im not sold on the whole 'deledio as captain because he is out best player' argument.

Either am I, he is not our BEST player either, one of them is injured, the other is a former WCE.

No garbage about it, he didn't even want to lead the team out in the second half, Ben Cousins had to push him to the front. What does that tell you about Delidio and his mental state, he can't handle it, he's soft.

PRE people are saying he's improved since his chat with Rawlings, Delidio himself has said he's been slack in the past. Anyone who thinks Delidio is either our best player or close to it is kidding themselves. Delidio is however the best player in a very rotten playing list excluding Richo, Cuz and potentially Cotchin.

IMHO I hope he goes somewhere else, we should with any luck get a decent draft pick for him. I don't think Delidio has got the mental toughness required to be an elite player like Ben Cousins, I don't think he is prepared to work as hard as Ben does to achieve what he could achieve if he put his mind to it. People are saying he's worth $500K a year, really is he worth that amount, I don't think so maybe $300K a year, he would have to improve significantly to warrant a better pay deal in my book.

Perhaps its all due to the absolute *smile* poor development programmes that were in place at Richmond when he arrived. Number 1 draft pick, won the NAB Rising Star, big things expected of him, sure you can blame Wallace for playing him all over the place, but at the end of the day it comes down to the man himself and to date Delidio IMHO has not produced a consistent enough onfield effort that says he's our best player or even close to our best.

If Delidio stays at Richmond, hopefully he will work at his game, his fitness and his ability to shake off taggers etc. He's got a gun midfielder sitting with him now in Cousins, if Ben can't get Brett to fire up, then I'd say Delidio for all the hype is done and dusted and will never achieve what he could which would be tragic, but he would not be alone in that, plenty of potential stars of AFL have done the same thing.

Re: Brett Deledio

I don't think that Brett will leave at this point given the coaching appointment and proposed direction. Having said that I believe he should be offered a new contract with improved salary conditions. He has become arguably our best player (cuz and richo aside. I would include Chimpa, but he needs to get over his injury concerns first) and on the whole has shown real heart over the latter part of the year. Furthermore I expect his game will go up another level under Hardwick. I don't think that Newman is the best man for the captaincy. Many will disagree with me, and that's fair enough, but I belive that Ben Cousins is too old to be a viable long term option, and maybe doesn't need that official role as he provides that leadership regardless. If I was Hardwick I would challenge Deledio at the start of the preseason to make the captaincy his. If he has the desire, we will see it soon enough.

I understand your concerns Massai, but generally disagree with the idea some have entertained regarding trading him for draft picks. I think Hardwick can get his head were it needs to be. I don't see the benefit of trading someone who is so close to becoming an elite of the competition, whilst still very young, for an unknown quantity. Especially while Ben Cousins is still at the club. Unlike so many on our list Brett he has exquisite skills, pace, courage and can provide a threat resting as a forward. I admit he has lacked consistancy, but believe that can change under the new coaching/fitness staff.

If The Chimp can recover for a full-ish pre-season and remain on the park, we will have the makings of an extremely strong midfield over the next 5-7 years when you include collins, Thomson (yes I think he will make it as a clearence player if he can keep himself fit) and another A-grade midfielder with pick 3 (should we go in that direction under a best available player policy?).

Re: Brett Deledio

Until Cotchin puts a full season together,Lid's is UNQUESTIONABLY our best player at the moment!

Re: Brett Deledio

oh i beleive we gotta keep delideo, he is the only player we have, escept cuz, with any class...along with cotch, our only potential super star..id look at what we could get for tambling first..i know everyone disagree,s..but another average year, and pissweak over the last few...he did show some great signs so maybe we could get a high draft pick..just an thought..

you are right Dave - if anyone questions it have a look at contested possessions, total possessions, clangers over the last 5 weeks.

Deledio will be a major player of the competition next year - has been for the last 5 or 6 weeks
