Brett Deledio (merged)

I would say he sort-of walked, which is why I said they didn't "really" re-appoint him. Technically, yes, they did re-appoint Hafey. But he didn't have the support of Graeme Richmond and in those days that was a pretty big message that you wouldn't be around for long.

How they could do this to a 4 time premiership coach, only 2 years after we won 2 in a row, was beyond me then and is beyond me now. It spoke of a broken culture which we suffered for later, for 37 bloody years. It also took years to rebuild the club after the problems of the 1980s and 1990s, and then more years to go from survival to success.

We must remember the mistakes of the past so we never ever repeat them.

Be gracious to Delidio, make him welcome, it is the new Tiger way and a much healthier way to run the organisation.

So true DS
Graeme Richmond was the solution, we were in the wilderness for 20 or so years & he dragged us out of it & made us a powerhouse.
Unfortunately he then became the problem because of his ruthless methods. They made us successful on the field, but after a while they also made us a fractured club off field.
It took us decades to realise that a new era was upon us & the old ways no longer worked.
We can thank Gary March for starting the era we now enjoy.
We are indebted to Peggy, Benny, Balmey, Dimma etc for carrying us to the heights we are now enjoying.

As for Lids, I'm sure he's been shown that he's welcome at the club any time, he is after all a Life member & played many great games for us.
As has been said earlier in this thread, at one stage it seemed that we couldn't win without him in the team.

Assuming he's no longer connected with Gws they should get him down for drinks and slap a Richmond jumper (or at least a club polo) on him as a way of saying you are welcome back at the club and no hard feelings.
Get around him in "The Richmond Way!"

You are right about Graeme Richmond, we were terrible in the 1950s and up to the mid 1960s. It would have been interesting to see how Len Smith would have gone as a coach.

So difficult to work out when the solution has become the problem, losing Hafey was an indicator but how do you see that without hindsight?

I watched the interview on the fox footy show. The amount of loss that family has had to deal with in a short space of time is just wrong.

Like pretty much everyone that posts here we all thought we were stuffed after 2016. Lots of us wanted dimma gone too and I know I thought this group wasn’t going to get it done with one of the best collections of talent id seen - when would it happen in my lifetime? I know I was thinking it was going to be reset and another decade at least.

The club had clearly at that stage not embraced being vulnerable as a strength so you can see and hear the mental state Brett had got himself into and really from the interview it sounded like he could only open up at home.

Dimma told him if he wanted a flag he should go to GWS.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I think it would be better for him if he could truly be happy for his mates even while being sad for himself. The very last bit of the video seemed to indicate he is almost in that space now and all the other losses in his life have put footy into perspective.

Best luck to him. He gave me some joy when we sucked.

We clearly don't want anything to do with him as a player anymore, which i trust the club with ....

Our coaching stocks were full after Lonergan came on board.

The club would have known for some time that Caracella was leaving and would have had their new coaching structure plans in place back in July/August. The timing with Lids didn't suit.

Lids doesn't strike me as a guy with great coaching potential, but you never know I guess.

Seems a very strange arrangement.

Sign an old bloke who has never really mentored anyone and has completely *smile* legs and played, what? 10 games of footy in 3 years, none of them any good to play for your 2nds and mentor blokes?

good luck with that hawks

Agree - almost shameful. I am a darksider that (with the passage of time) wonders why many supporters hold him in high esteem. As someone who works in a corporate environment - why aren't we asking why our ascension started when we cut away toxic leaders????

Deledio was a very good player that looked for better pastures (eg gen millenium vic gen X/Y)

No loyalty to the club!

we should not return it!

I can rememeber Lids playing some damned good footy for our club, better than just a very good player. He was a gun player.

Having said that, I wouldn't want to see him in a coaching capacity at Richmond. I'm not basing that on anything I've seen on the field, but some of his behaviors or moreso the manner in which he deals with those around him. I don't want to go into specifics on a public forum. He seems pretty popular amongst his peers, and he's ok company but in any leadership or coaching role at our club, I think we could find people far better suited to the role.

At the same time I hope he finds his role fulfilling at the Hawks, I certainly don't dislike the guy and as I said, he played some brilliant football in a pretty pathetic Richmond outfit.

Other than Ivan, any retired player looking to launch their coaching career has moved onto another club. Nothing out of the ordinary about Lids not starting his coaching away from PRO.

I have nothing against Lids and for many years carried the Tigers through skill and determination until injury took its toll so we owe him our thanks and admiration for that. However I do find it strange that as soon as Lids left the club the whole playing culture changed into such an inclusive group with each other, first team or seconds. Maybe the culture shift was just an evolution at Punt Road.
