Brett Deledio (merged)

He's at a club that reached the prelim, would've thought his focus would be on going a step further next year. "Should" corrected to "could" is telling, don't you think? He's expressing regret at joining a club that will be a contender for the forseeable future.

Yeah so what? As I said he's only human. He was at the Tigers for 11 years and played 243 games, much of it in a rabble of a team. I think it's refreshing for a player to come out and say how they really feel. You wouldn't be human if you didn't feel some sorrow and regret under these circumstances. It's funny, most Carlton supporters seem to be thanking Gibbs for his time at Carlton yet when it comes to Deledio, who has a similar history, half the supporters are attacking him at every opportunity. You have to feel a bit ashamed when Carlton supporters are acting more respectful than your own.

Go back 12 months ago and Richmond supporters were exactly the same with Brett.

If Carlton beat Adelaide in the GF in 2018 you will see the exact same reaction from Blue supporters towards Gibbs.

Yep.

When Brett left, the majority were very complimentary of his contributions. Also Gibbs, while moving to a better side, is also moving home with a young family. Brett moved solely for team success.

Really? I suggest you go back and read some posts from around this time last year. I think the attitude of some sux to be perfectly honest. Psychologically I totally understand where Deledio is coming from. I just don't see the sense in the lambasting that has been going on.

Easiest thing to back up ever. Have a look yourself. These are over the space of 2 pages.

I will be cheering Brett but not his team

Remember watching Lids in his 1st game against Geelong. We got spanked but remember thinking we had a bona fide star on our hands. He is a truly elite player of the competition and I thank him greatly for the service to the club. However, it was the right decision for both Lids and the RFC.

Well done Lids. You should be really proud of your career thus far. Hope you get to enjoy some success at your new club. I for one will be cheering you on.

Lids will tear it up at GWS if fit. Not like that disappointment Griffen.

I'll miss him, great servent. One of the most talented players to ever don the yellow and black. Ultra consistent.sad he didn't end up a 1 club player and how it ended. I'm sure he's p!ssed with the management (not the fans).

He still has a photo of his kid in a Richmond jumper on twitter.

Best of luck Lids, really sorry to see you go. Yep I'm very sad.

Will be good to see Lids enjoy his footy next year. I see Cameron suggests Lids will play forwaRD. Imagine Lids taking the NO 3 mid back man behind Stevie J and Toby Green. He will think "Life wasn't meant to be this easy" on his way to kicking 30+ for the season. GOOD LUCK AND THANKS FOR A LOT OF GOOD MEMORIES.

Thanks for all the memories Brett. Will sure miss you in the Yellow and Black, and whilst I am sad you wont get to experience success with us - I hope you do during the rest of the career as you have sure earned it after some of the rubbish teams you have had to play in with us. Thank you and good luck.

Best of luck to Brett, I really do wish him all the best. I can't quite understand the terms of the trade yet, I just feel a bit sad he is leaving.

Won't be quite the same without him.

Yeh. WAs always a feeling of relief when he had the ball. Who will step up?

If GWS make the final it'll give me another reason to watch and barrack for them. With Lids there and Cameron as coach, we can call it our own.

Even look at his twitter likes, all Richmond supporters getting around him and wishing him the best.

Because he's coming across like a sooky la la princess.

No different to when you go to the pokies, jump on a machine that someone has been using for a few hours and given up on, immediately win $50 on the first spin and then get dirty looks from previous user. (Yes, this has happened to me several times. And to rub it in, I'm a huge gambler that plays a single line with 1x bets on 5c machines. ;D )

lol are you serious? You spent the time picking out the positive posts? I'm not arguing there were some cheering him on, I am arguing there were plenty who were giving him heaps for leaving even this time last year.

I don't use Twitter so I wouldn't know. I am basing it on other forums I've read like on here and on Facebook. I am not by the way accusing everyone, but there has been a fair proportion of negativity from people who clearly don't understand the psychology involved in leaving a place after being there so long, particularly without success, and the very next year that club having the ultimate success. I don't care who you are, most are going to have uncontrollable feelings about that being in the same position. I commend Deledio for being honest about his feelings, and I think it's a pity so many wish to interpret it without acknowledgement of the circumstances.

Wowee.

I didn't pick and choose posts if that's what you're implying. Those are posts off two consecutive pages 12 months back. EXACTLY what you suggested I look at.

Note that time stamps on the posts are about two hours apart.

"It's funny, most Carlton supporters seem to be thanking Gibbs for his time at Carlton yet when it comes to Deledio, who has a similar history, half the supporters are attacking him at every opportunity. Gibbs and Deledio have received very similar, respectful, send offs despite your inability to understand.

What is different with Deledio is how he has acted post GF, and the reaction from some since, which you are getting confused with.

Perhaps show/link me the negative reaction pages from 12 months ago like you suggested I look at, because I sure didn't see the ones you spoke of.

Brett took a punt and it bombed this season but he may get another shot next year.

If they win then it paid off for him, but to be a Premiership player at the club you started with and a historically major big 4 club at that will always trump being a Premiership player for a plastic franchise.

We did well out of Brett going so no hard feelings from me.

Brett is past his best as a player and we got a great deal for him.

Gibbs has paid his way at Carlton they've got good service from him.

But one must remember that Bryce is an Adelaide boy and has a young family that he wants to go home with, its a fair request imo.

He has tried to go back what at least 3 years in a row i reckon, but has played well for Carlton even though they had denied his requests come trade week.

I dont feel ashamed one tiny bit. Carlton finished 16th , we finished 1st.

They can hoorah Gibbsy all the way to the wooden spoon if they want.

Hell, they are welcome to give Grigga a guard of honour R1 if it makes 'em feel nice.

we are the tigers of old, again. Your either with us, or against us.

Lids is against us. and hes sooking about it.

Well I think it's odd and Deledio has said a few odd things over the years, but I'm not attacking him.

"I'm not in this game to scratch around with the turkeys."

Richmond Turkeys. 2017 premiers.

I think it's very ordinary the way he is being attacked by some, not just on here. There are lots of posts, tweets etc that are made on the assumption that he was some sort of big headed knob hated by his teammates and these statements are made with no knowledge whatsoever other than what they have heard or what they have read on some fansite

I really have no idea except for a few things

1. I have spoken directly to a senior Richmond player and he certainly does not subscribe to that opinion. That is a sample of 1 which I freely admit is not representative
2. That's not what Alex Rance said on SEN about him
3. He was voted by his peers to be VC of the club on a few occasions

That's all I know but what I do also know is that he is a 243 game player who won our b&F twice, was twice AA, was vice captain and played some terrific footy for the tigers. That's the way I see him. He is also a human being and the way he felt after the GF sounded pretty human to me!!

does not play for us guys he plays for a rival.
was a great player for us in an ordinary list.
played 240 odd games for us did not win a final don't not win a brownlow.
i'm struggling to find anything that i'll remember him for in 20 years.
move on nothing more to see here.

My most vivid memory of him was getting towelled up one on one by a dud that had just finished a subway before playing in the elimination final for the Blue battlers

The decision Lids made will stay with him for the rest of his life. He no doubt regrets it and it’ll sting every time it’s mentioned, which it will be whenever he meets a Tigers supporter or he’s mentioned in the media. For life.

No need to bag him really, doubt we could add any more misery to what he’s got to endure.
