Kavanagh apparently ran a 3.08 for the 20m sprint, Ellis a 3.05 - interesting given the perceptions out there.

Ellis played a full season and was coming into the testing match fit. Kavanagh was coming off one of his two-dozen sick notes and groin / hamstring / heart injuries; apparantly he is a real trooper for even trying the poor dear. Difference is that Kavanagh is quick off the mark and slows, Ellis is slow off the mark but can hold his pace.

If you are going Collingwood; Ellis is more like Ben Johnson. Shaw has some pace and run and carry and will bounce the footy and take blokes on. Ellis is a bloke who motors around and kicks under pressure.

As for Heppell haunting us, who is actually haunted by the fact we chose Conca? Heppell maybe in front at this early stage but let's not get ahead of ourselves, winning a Rising Star Award is great but there's another deacade of football ahead of these guys.

Bumber fans think we're really cut over Heppell. I haven't once wished we had of picked Heppell over Conca.

I saw enough from Conca to know that he will be a very good player for us.

He showed two things that every fan wants to see early on from a youngster. Hardness (cleaning up Stokes in a contest is one example) and coolness under pressure.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Just watch Kavanagh's highlights. He can't kick on his left at all. In AFL today you need to kick both feet. And Richmond's recruitment mantra for a while now has been disposal quality.

He's not quick or overly skilled. Injury prone and questionable character yet it will bite us in the ass. Like you said in a previous post, there's a reason GWS passed. Kav was worth about pick 20 on ability regardless of injury.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

I am rapt we got Ellis and I wouldn't be surprised to see him coming off the bench sooner-than-later.

Go Tigers and welcome again Brandon... w00t!

Sounding a bit to happy for a Monday K3 ;D

I think he might just be on Eddie Betts round one.

He couldn't even participate fully at the Combine, doing well at the 'clean hands' test may well prove to be a telling omen.

ha ha ha... good call there mate but then I 'almost' got a good night's sleep from my three year old. Almost. :)

There has to be a good chance he will be lining up on Betts in Rnd 1, else I would be thinking Morris will be on him. Whoever it is I hope they start pushing him around right from the get go, no easy run at anything!

Back to Ellis though. I remember reading the big article on him not too long ago and thinking that he sounded like he would be a great get for any club and yes, I'm glad that we are that club.

Is Ellis quick enough for Betts?

Not too many would be quick enough for Betts. Fortunately raw speed isn't the only way to stop a player. I'm thinking though with Helbig, Conca, Morris and co that Ellis may have to fight for his position as a youngster in the team.

Which is not necessarily a bad thing IMO, and sounds as though that will be the model going forwards from Hardwick, that everyone will have to earn their spots.

It's a damn good thing, and not something we've been used to at Tigerland.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

its a delicate balancing act between earning a spot and getting games into the talented kiddies.

unless his preseason is an out and out disaster im betting Ellis will be in the latter category and rightfully so.

however, if he doesnt step up to the plate (ugh) when he starts playing then his spot is available to someone who deserves it.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

The kid has plenty of time to find his feet in the AFL. I'm guessing he will be given every opportunity in the NAB to show what he has to offer and where hes at with his development.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Read the Ellis article on the RFC website. Certainly no silver spoon hanging out of this kid's mouth.
Brought up on struggle street and suffering significant adversity with his father's cancer battles, this guy is made of tough stuff.
He seems to be the epitome of the old Jack Dyer working class spirit, a terrific work ethic and a driving desire to be the best he can.
His draft camp performances indicate he is athletically classy but he he's got a real hard edge about him.
Honestly, I haven't seem him kick a football, but from what I've read I like him already!

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

His style reminds me a little of ex blue Paul Meldrum. Just looks very solid with everything he does; plays the percentages. Maybe lacks a little leg speed and dash off the mark and i get the feeling serviceable lateral movement without real good evasion. Has leadershiip written all over him.

GO TIGES!!!

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

It will be interesting if they groom him from Day 1 to do the kick outs. There is no doubt he is a phenomenal kick whose long balls get to the target quickly through the air. So if they feel he is good enough to play round 1 and has the maturity to handle the pressure of kicking out from behinds on the MCG in front of 75K in round 1 that should make interesting viewing.
I always felt it was a huge negative for our young inexperienced team to have two of our mature bodies in either Newman or Deledio doing a large majority of the kick outs and not competing to get the ball up the field. I wider how many marks Deledio would get floating across the talls if he is the receiver from those Ellis roosts.
