Brandon Ellis

Houli, Ellis and Short all had an ordinary night... and we still pantsed them! Our topliners were that good.

Houli clearly had a role to play. Not one kickout for the first time this year. Obviously not as prolific as some of his recent games but I didn't think he did too much wrong. Went when he had to, disposed well most of the time. Short similar, I didn't think he had such a bad game. Kept it simple and did his job and competed and game high 7 bounces to get those kickouts as far and long as possible. The backline did a good job as a whole. Ellis on the other hand was woeful. It stood out like dogs balls. Lost every single one on one, fumbly, often panicked whenever under any sort of minimal pressure, slipped all the time. Just a shocker. He is better than that but one has to wonder what his mindset is like at the moment. Seems very switched off to me.

Just a theoretical

What if the Club decided to play Ellis in the VFL this weekend - alongside challengers for the wing such as KMac?
Form in that game would be used to decide who played in the PF.

KMac's played backline in the VFL. I can't see them suddenly shifting him on the wing to see if he can knock off Ellis. May a well just leave Ellis in the side.

I have watched the game twice and Houli was beaten one on one many times and didn't show much until later on in the game.

The lock down arm wrestle game didn't suit players with outside games so both Houli and Ellis struggled.

My point being most posters are piling in on Ellis and giving a pass to Houli who as an All Australian should have a higher bar.

I think most are piling on Ellis because he clearly and obviously had a terrible game. I didn't notice it anywhere near as much with Houli even after watching the replay. Houli has had a ripper season so it is natural to forgive a game even if it was poor - which I don't believe it was. Two or three years ago Houli was getting just as much if not more. It's the build up effect and rightly so. No player has a blinder every game.

Plus Ellis has a history of these types of poorish games

We all agree Ellis had a bad/ordinary game with 3 or 4 howler efforts but he somehow was still ranked and rated top 8 or better in disposals, efficiency and metres gained and his 3 clangers was about team average, yet some are gushing over JG, can anyone explain to me how JG gets cut slack with his role on neale at 37 very effective touches, 10 clearances and 2 goals v JG's shadowing role with his 14 touches, 0 clearances and 5 clangers, maybe im being a bit harsh on jack after seeing de boar blanket the bont... but i really didnt rate 7 or 8 of our boys on sat, yet it was all brandos fault...we were lucky in a way with lions inaccuracy and a masterclass from dusty, shedda, grima and dion.

Maybe you would have a valid point if Graham was actually on Neale. I evaluated Jack Graham's time at centre bounces and he was NOT tagging Neale. We don't tag players. As I mentioned in another post, Graham was involved in centre square bounces 11 times and was manned up against 5 different opponents in that time including Neale (late in the game last 2 bounces). I thought Graham was awesome. Tough as nails and his defensive pressure was enormous. Game high 86 pressure acts and 8 tackles. Did what he's there to do. For the record in the 1st half these were the players who were manned up on Neale at centre bounces:

- Prestia - 4 times
- Edwards - 3
- Cotchin - 2
- Dusty - 2

Graham was in there 3 times in the first half & against Zorko, McCarthy, Raynor

Fair points, JG was 90% on Neale most of first quarter in general play, not fussed and agree about centre bounce set ups but Neale first goal was coz he got away and goal side of JG and Hardwicks assignment for JackG would have been to shadow and harass Neale and Zorko and to let Prestia and Shedds to have less responsibility and more firepower which worked treat.

Agree Jacks relentless pressure is very good BUT WITH getting it 14 times with no goals, no goal assists, no clearances, below average metres gained for a mid and 5 clangers...Simpson or Scott won't be losing any sleep over him. They won't be losing sleep over Ellis either of course, but to say Ellis played a woeful game but Jack was awesome annoys me. Jacks lack of pace minding class mids is just as much a concern to me as the Ellis lack of toughness....Thought they were both well below par in their roles. And both were terrible early but ok after that.

Word is he’ll have Menadue for company on the Coast
new drafting strategy by Gold Coast - the buddy system.
take miles and cellis. take bellis and Menadue. they did the same in the draft.
it's why they need picks 1 and 2
it takes two

With due respect why do you just make things up? You think we can't review these things. Here I'll list you some facts. The facts show that in the first quarter Jack Graham, in 23 ball ups and throw ins I reviewed, he only stood on Neale in ONE of those. You are correct the goal that Neale kicked was when Graham stood on him at a ball up, however it's mildly ironic and amusing, considering you're trying to use an argument against Jack's game to defend Ellis, that the reason he got the opportunity was that Ellis fumbled a handball receive from Baker who won the clearance. So here are the results as I found them:

20 minutes on the clock: #1 ballup or throwin: Prestia is on Neale
19: #2,#3,#4: Prestia
18: #5,#6: Prestia
17: #7: Cotchin
15: #8: Neale wasn't there
14: #9: Neale wasn't there
14: #10: Edwards
13: #11: Edwards - this is where I see Graham for the first time - so on the bench for the first 30% of the quarter
12: #12: Edwards - Graham is marking Robinson
11 - Graham disposal Zac Bailey is chasing him down the field
9: #13: Edwards
9: #14: Prestia
7: #15 Broad
5: #16: Neale is forward on Baker
5: #17: Graham - Neale kicks goal
5: #18: Neale is forward on Baker
4: #19, #20: Neale is forward on Baker
2: #21: Edwards
0: #22: Prestia
0: #23: Bolton

So yes if 1 time on Neale represents 90% of the 1st quarter (even though Graham didn't come on till 13-14 left on the clock) you are correct Graham did a terrible job not containing his 8 disposal 1 goal first quarter. The goal Neale kicked was a result of us turning it over, it was a bit of luck and good play for Neale, not much Graham could have done about that one, but always easy to explain how he may have in hindsight.

Please just be realistic. Don't make things up to try and prove an argument. Most pundits think Jack Graham played very well. I am sure the coach was very happy with his output. His role was not to get clearances, his role was to pressure and harass and build the perceived pressure and that he did with 86 pressure act points and 8 tackles. Anything else he achieves is a bonus. 5 clangers included 3 frees against by the way. 1st one the guy ducked into him (or slipped), nothing he could do about it. 2nd one was probably there, in the back in a marking contest. Can't remember the 3rd one. How many of Graham's pressure acts that caused turnovers and a score to the Tigers would have been counted in his score assists? I predict none.

Good analysis and listing of facts

I really feel for Brandon because unfortunately this thread has effectively become the disproportionate "We hate Brandon Ellis" thread imo. Very distasteful. Is this sort of thing appropriate for the PRE forum?. It is bordering on being on-line bullying by a few posters imo. Many AFL players and coaches have spoken in the last couple of years about an increasing problem in the AFL concerning mental health issues of players. There have been a few examples of AFL players having to step away from the game due to mental health issues. I certainly hope for Brandon's mental health sake that he never reads this thread.

It is the RFC match committee that selects Brandon in the team each week. I imagine that they think that the good stuff that Brandon can deliver in games outweighs any bad stuff.

See what you mean.
Brando started the year as he appears to have finished it..playing terrible football seemingly not willing to try and win a contest. Never want to accuse an AFL footballer of shirking it, but after watching the replay that’s the only logical explanation for how bad he was.
I doubt the coaches will trust him after that.

Fair enuff havent seen replay so you research and summery might be better and yes i meant 90% of the time jack and lochie had the ground at same time and yes l knew half his clangers were from smashing players with the ball, just saying different roles mean jack causes his pressure at the ball carrier and brandos is almost opposite in gut running to block attacking avenues, block leading lanes, pick up a forward running seagull and stop teams on the switch. they both do unrewarded stuff essential to our structure on their better days, sad day for footy so we can pick it up another time, cheers.
