An advance warning that you'll all have to do some work next Friday. Tester will be upgrading to our new forum. Yep the much talked about one with the ignore function.

At this stage the intention is to start at approx 10am. It could take several hours depending how things go. It will probably be mid-afternoon before it's finished. PRE will be out of action for that time.

Brilliant. I'll never have to read another jb03 post again.

the bubble world has arrived.. :police:

i find this and interesting one. on one hand i dont believe in censorship and think everyone has a right to their own opinion. but then there are comments that are just rediculous, but also funny to try and work out how the hell it was arrived at.

Will be interesting to see who blocks who and then who unblocks who because they have no idea what the discussion is about..

i wont be blocking anyone.. ;D

The ignore function is nothing to do with censorship or restricting rights to expressing an opinion. It's about personal rights to choose whose posts people want to see or to ignore.

There are some very good functions on the new forum that should really benefit PRE and reduce the workload of the moderators. Looking forward to it.

After starting my new job over a year ago, I have not had as much time to check out PRE... :-[

If I ever need to know what is going on though, I generally check here first, usually can find out anything I need to know without too much bias that you get from other news media (i.e. the Hun etc.)

Hopefully all will transition well :D

Unless this becomes a private forum, i.e. one you have to log in to just to be able to read, an ignore function is pretty much a waste of time.

So what am I expected to do whilst PRE is out of action? :help
I've got less than a week to plan for this disaster.

Can one apply the ignore function to one's own posts? ;D

How so?

Im confused. Who does the ignoring.
Is it the person starting the thread or the person reading the threads.

Do we see a blank page and you click on the post to read it or is it just the same with a new option.

You can select individual members to ignore. If you have them on your ignore list you don't see what they post.

I can't understand what Turnip means either.

Thank you. Much easier to understand.

All ive got to do now is find something else to read on my lunch break on friday.

Because people can still see the posts of people on their ignore list if they read the forum without logging in or before they log in. It's only 100% foolproof if the forum is private and requires registration to view posts.

Does it have to be 100% foolproof? It is just a tool, it is up to people to choose how effectively they use it.

I'm not likely to ignore anyone, but if I wanted to then to use the function properly I'd make sure I didn't log in anonymously.

* Why would you give "Guests" the ignore privilege ?

* If they don't have the privilege, then how will posts be "ignored" if you are a "Guest" ?

If you can still see all posts as a Guest, the ignore function is either pretty pointless, or only a so called benefit if you could only read PRE whilst logged in and made it a closed forum to Guests, period.

That's kinda how i see what JLT meant to imply.

I can't imagine Rosy wanting to make PRE exclusive and not able to be viewed at all by possible new members, or as big an audience as possible. Defeats one of the purposes for having a public forum on the net in the first place.

The easiest way to ignore someone, is to simply keep skipping past their (blah blah blah) posts. Doesn't cost anything in fancy technology.
