Ben Cousins a Tiger (Merged)

In picking Cousins, there's no doubt that we have the best available mature age player. We've also made the only logical decision that gives us the best chance of reaching finals in 2009.

Instead of the negativity that flys around this site - what about the positive outcome that is very possible.

Cousins stays clean and with a desire to regain his status as one of the game's premier midfielders, returns to near brilliant form. Foley, Deledio, Cotchin etc all benefit from having Cousins in the team - both seeing close up how a Champion prepares, learning from him (footy wise that is) and having the tagging heat turned down slightly during games. Coughlan returns from injury to add to the mix.

Off field, we have record membership. Team makes the finals and the sleeping Tiger wakes up. Debt is reduced - additional funds are released to bolster recruiting and player development (two of our archilles heals for a long time) and finally we have a club that our kids can be proud of going into the future.

Good post.

Were others hoping for another Clay Sampson or Ben Marsh?

Agreed. March, Cameron & co. slipped a fair way in my opinion of them over the past 24 hours. Shame after handling the rest of it so well.

I hope it works out, for all their sakes..
why, because they kept their selection a secret.
F&*K the media and everyone, they don`t have to be told anything,i mean anything, as to who we might or might not be taking in any draft.
i`m rapt that we deceived everyone, especially the other clubs that we probably weren`t going to take cousins.

this is a competition, the richmond football club has been way to nice and submissive for way too long.

While I have been against drafting Cousins and would rather have had the club stick to the youth and making our own champions....the pick has been done and Cousins is now a Tiger.

While I disagree with the decision I will support Cousins and hope he plays well for the team and the club I support.

It is a msssive risk for the club...and a fine line between 'hero' and 'zero'...with the fallout big in terms of sponsorship and our decision-making if things go awry....if things go well, then we will be lauded as a club that showed some bravery by taking the risk and helping Cousins turn his life around.

Ben Cousins failing will open the door for supporters who were against this decision to say 'told you so'....and while it would be good for my own ego to be right again, the club is bigger than any individual, and I will be more than happy to take the flak from supporters who wanted Cousins if things go well.

For the club I really hope this works out.

There are so many people who are saying they will take up a membership even though theyre not supporters its amazing.
would expect a membership increase from the fairer sex (and blokes of other persuasions). You know what they say about women and bad boys. My wife (Crows supporter) want's a topless picture on the fridge next to my Tiger guernsey one

Half a Gerrard and I'll be happy.
Who knows, both might be holding up a trophy at season's end? ;D

:clap Top post Livers!

Fortune favours the brave. At last Richmond has taken on the AFL and some other clubs, taken a few knocks but come out with the prize. The way I figure it they all said they wanted Cousins to have another chance........ but let someone else do it. We deserve credit for trying. It's up to us to support the club and Benny now.

Yep...go down and get your membership....the ones who cut theirs yesterday better get a roll of sticky-tape....and they better close the Monash so tools can find the ones that got thrown out of car windows yesterday as well... :hihi

How many people will be at training tomorrow. Cousins expected to train.

Thats one of the things I am still 'nervous' about...the media hype aurrounding Cousins will continue all year, on and off the field.
I hope our other players, especially the younger ones can tolerate it.

Maybe the club can move training more often and have it 'closed doors' simply to let Ben train without all the media scrutinising his every move and for the younger players to also train and concentrate without a media circus.

We've got him now...we have to deal with it and concentrate on footy and planning for the new season ahead.

"Leigh Witten, 43, planned to stay at Punt Rd overnight and vowed to remain for as long as it took to convince the club to recruit Cousins."

Is Leigh still at the ground?

the hype will probably take the heat off our younger players livers.

gee ricky nixon said some great things about richmond just now on SEN.
"a club on the rise,a massive club that`s well coached and well administered"

Hopefully Mopsy.
Only time will tell.

I guess the only other two precedents I can think of were Carey getting to the Crows and Judd to Carlton....how did the media hype surrounding these two effect the rest of the team then?

Wow he's never said that before. At least he'll get his commission now.
