I'm really undecided on the estrogenic impact of soy, but try to avoid it in large quantities to be on the safe side. It may just be bro-science though; dunno. It's obvioulsy a little harder to avoid if your a physically active vegetarian.

Quinoa is an awesome protein source. I think it may be the only complete source of protein in the plant world.

i have found personally soy is no good for males

almost everyone i have prepped for bodybuilding comps have done better without it
when soy was in their diet , they held water and it didnt matter what they did they just couldnt get the detail required to be successful onstage

I believe that soy is a toxin, and is particularly toxic to thyroid patients.

not everyone is going to compete , but as the older we get , our natural testosterone diminshes, the last thing we need is a boost in estrogen

stay away from any soy based products, they promote estrogen

What's a suitable alternative to cow's milk then, given our stomachs aren't made to digest its proteins? Almond milk any good?

Oh, I should add that I am a vegetarian and have REALLY low iron levels atm *coughs*

Your input/ feedback/ thoughts would be really terrific :D

I'm surprised nobody has suggested addressing the low iron levels as a priority, especially considering the amount of exercise.

Thanks for your consideration Rosy and I am happy to report that I am/ have been on Iron + Vit C tablets for a month now but still have five months to go according to the doc. For those who know what I am on about, my Iron reading was at 18 parts per...

Good catch there Freezer! My first thoughts were rice and goats, milk that is, but almond could be a great way to go.

Rice milk, oat milk, almond milk are all better alternatives than soy milk.

Eating quinoa contributes to the poverty and poor health of the Peruvians who grow it: because world demand is so high they can no longer afford to eat what has been a staple of their diet for centuries and are eating cheaper Western *smile* food.

Dude, I would love some tips on dealing with elbow tendinitis (golfers elbow) for people who lift. It has plagued me on and off since I started. Do you have any experience involving that?

No expert - I'll leave that to others, but I bought a copy of an Arnold Swartzenegger book about 12 years ago. Found it really good as it covered about every excersize you could do, lots on dietary stuff, anatomy, etc. Is fairly dated now, but as a reference for all kinds of weightlifting related stuff it I thought it was pretty good.

Hey everyone. Without wanting to abuse the sharing of knowledge, a good friend of mine is having a really hard time of it at the moment over in a cold USA winter. His symptoms are, in his own words...

"My immune system is attacking the joints in my fingers, toes and jaw. The first two just make it harder to use my hands and walk, the latter puts pressure on my ear drum and causes dizziness. The meds either cause fatique/blackouts, don't work at all or make me break out in hives. And neither should be taken every day since they can cause organ failure. It only gets this bad every few years when we get really cold winters. So ya, I'm looking forward to spring getting here soon."

If anyone has any thoughts, on how he can mitigate these, I would be really appreciative.

Most likely is diet related. Many foods cause 'inflamation'. Has he tried cutting out various food types to see what he may be allergic to? THe usual suspects to start with often are dairy or gluten.

Also he should seriously consider buying a juicer and juicing fresh fruit and veggies regulary. if he doesn;t already. Our high meat diets cause acidity - acidity cause inflamation. fresh veggies particularly the greens make the body more akaline. I got rid of all sorts of health problems just by drinking fresh fruit and veggie juice every day.

Anyway, worth a try. The worst that can happen is he improves his health.

Evo, thanks once again mate! I felt a bit bad putting that post up but my friend is in a really bad way and would like to help in any way possible.

I have done some research but only online, as has he, along with speaking to his doc. Unfortunately, in typical western thinking his doc has prescribed him some nasty drugs, and that's it.

I will certainly ask him about his diet, again, and see if we can get some improvements happening in his life.

Cheers

Don't believe me but osteoarthritis can be caused by the immune system being tricked and activated and the reaction eating away the cartilage of joints. Arthritis Australia has a web site and can advise where to get treatment.
This seems to be low doses of chemotherapy drugs with bad side effects, and new generation safer drugs that have less side effects
You have to stop the process of the cartilage being attacked, and need expert help as this is leading edge treatment
But it might be something else, seek expert advice, I have no medical knowledge
