Play Vid to hear Hardwick's pre season wrap he gives insight into this pre-season, Richmond's recruiting strategy, leaders at the club, and previews the 2013 season....http://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/2012-12-20/beefedup-tigers

The physical development of the Richmond playing group has been a standout feature of this pre-season training period compared to the others during Damien Hardwick’s coaching reign at the Club.

And, the coach is delighted with what he’s seeing . . .

“Pre-season’s been really good. The thing that’s more noticeable this year is the bigger bodies of our players. The size of our group, from a height point of view, but also generally width-wise, has certainly improved,” Hardwick said on ‘Roar Vision’.

“We’ve certainly gone into the drafts looking to increase that . . . We’re probably looking at guys coming into the Club at 80-odd kilos now, compared to probably 70 kilos previously, so we’ve really improved in that area.”

What’s also caught Hardwick’s eye has been the overall quality of the Tigers’ pre-season training.

“The general standard of our training has also improved,” he said.

“We’ve brought in a lot of experienced players, which certainly helps. But players like Matty Dea, now coming into his third season, Dustin Martin, Reece Conca, they’ve all naturally progressed in their football ability . . .

“We’ve always gone into the pre-season with an individual focus. Team focus comes more into January planning.

“So, the key is if we can have marginal gain with every player on our list (pre-Christmas), it’s certainly going to put us in good stead coming into season 2013.”

I wonder if the new gym in the ME Bank centre finally got a lat pull down and seated row!

I hope the new "elite performance manager" corrected that

Mr Kekovich is most certainly going to be upset with the Tigers' preseason, if the thread title is accurate.

He might feel somewhat sheepish

Machines are for the sick.

Barbell and dumbell rows are much better.

Has Edwards put on another 6 kg.

He is going to be a very good player for us, he has the tricks and talent to become an elite player for us.
He should be our version of Dale Thomas

Really? Maybe if the players executed them properly

they have been doing bb and db rows and they are still small by afl standards
Lol some of the tiger trainers have more muscle

I think you will find a very strong correlation between average list age and average lean muscle mass across the AFL in general. Give the kids a chance.

Free weights are, by far, the better choice. By using machines, you don't develop the stabilizing muscles that are required for bigger increases in strength. If you want beach muscles, then machine weights are an OK substitute, but these are professional athletes. Free weights are the only way to go.

Yep. Check any professional sporting gym and you'll mainly see free weights.
Machines are good to isolate muscle groups but for sport you really need to build the second and third supporting muscle groups as well.
If you ever get a chance check out how cage fighters train. These guys take working out to another level.
