Beating North melbourne

Plus we're playing on the MCG.
North play its best footy at smaller grounds like the dome and tissue
Think we can spread them at the G.
They'll struggle with cover the open spaces.

as mentioned above, we have to hit them and hit them hard, they need a Hawthorn approach (as we did a few months back) and come out and apply that to North. Discipline, pack hunting, presission in our disposal.

We can win this if we treat this as a top 2 team and every player is switched on. I wont happen with just a Delidio - Miles and Cotchin playing good games.

Interesting that the tigers gave themselves a first half off last week anyway.

OUT for r 23
Nick Dal Santo (Managed) Jarrad Waite (Managed) Michael Firrito (Knee) Andrew Swallow (Knee) Shaun Higgins (Knee) Todd Goldstein (Managed) Sam Wright (Knee) Ben Cunnington (Knee) Scott D. Thompson (Ankle)

5 knees and an ankle. If that's true, they've got a few hobblers, that won't give them any leg speed for 100 minutes.

If their emergencies are thomas mullet and McDonald

Then thryve selected the same team that lost to the Western dogs

And I am sure the RFC brains trust has watched that game once or twice :)

How do we beat North?

With better skills in lateral space.

We beat them because its our own dung hill. This is the benefit of finishing fifth, even against another Melbourne team.

At Etihad skill is about what you can do in a telephone box.

At the MCG the hard middle distance runners get the chance to shine.

We slice them on the wings. We go inboard when we need to and slash them with handpass triangles. We have the best collective hands in the league.

A firm surface. Warm weather. The MCG. We are the better team.

If the team change mooted above does occur

The outs who played against richmond
Tippett daw mullet black McKenzie wood Dumont McDonald turner
They Collected 107 touches and 6 goals.

The week against the westernbulldogs
The ins (swallow 25, firrito Cunnington waite 3 goals, Higgins 3 goals, wright Goldstein dalsanto Thompson 19)
They Collected 129 touches and 6 goals

We beat them in the hit outs last week.
We won't this week, but we need to negate HOTA.
If Goldstein taps it to us: great!!
By the way, the hit outs went Norths way 58-30 against the western Bulldogs and they lost by 23.
Everything else went the dogs way except the marks for some reason. Nth also won the centre clearances 15-12.

The stats are similar between the western Bulldogs game and our game.

the stats aren't showing a great dip in performsnce by norths B team last week.
Norths game against freo looked liked it wS similar to ours, but North got the last goal (+11) but we gave the last 2 to freo (-4)

Now the stats I've got don't show a poor kick versus a good kick but it shows disposal efficiency and clangers and those stats are consistent for both games.

The big difference in performance across the two games is Swallow: 25 touches. He's an on baller.
I'll back martin cotchin edwards (and also Grigg cotchin miles) to get our share of the ball going our way.

Their goal kickers like us, are the usual known forwards and they spread it around. They don't have a consistent supplier.
Higgins might kick one, Waite 3: or it might be boomer 3 and Nahas 2.
Our defence need to be switched on.
"Don't back away from a shirtfront Houli: just drop the shoulder and pretend he isn't there- and he soon won't be".

So we've got to take confidence that the difference in performance for possessions wasn't that great between their ins and outs.

If we win the clearances and inside 50, and the stats indicate we will, and our defence holds true to form: we should walk this one in. My main concern is how we use the ball from forward of the square.
15 inside 50s for 1.5 will hurt us.
We needs to be composed inside 50.
Hopefully lloyd lennon Newy martin grigg edwards lids cotch b ellis Mac miles and co at ground level use their eyes.

Im confident: we've got this!
Not sure which quarter we'll sew it up though.
Hopefully we get the start we had versus freo at Subiaco

Go tigers

they do have quite a few avenues to goal which makes them hard to plan against.

I'm most worried about Higgins, he's having a fantastic season. Wish he played for us, actually.

This really $hits me - on the AFL Web site Carey states - If Roos lose it is 'a massive failure'. I know he is north through and through BUT they limped into 8th on the back of so many "junk wins" bar the Fremantle win. Yep, they had the wood on us in recent times but so did Collingwood and a few others.

What about Richmond - 15 wins with a superb defense and a forward line that starting to click.

Teach them a lesson Tigers.

Been worried about this match up for a while, just because they seem an uncannily awkward opponent for the Tiges.

But this is a really good point which I didn't think about. North certainly do play best on those smaller grounds where they are able to awkwardly bring other teams down to their level. The games they win are usually far from being a great spectacle. Scrappy grinding affairs where the lack of space probably contributes.

The game in Hobart was a good example. Bellerive Oval has similar dimensions as Etihad, actually even a touch smaller. Certainly a genuine oval with quite skinny wings. In fact, North seem to play above themselves regardless of opponent at Bellerive. I think the only game they've been spanked in at that ground was Sydney last season - another small ground specialist. And have managed to knock off the Eagles there twice I think.

larger ground hopefully we can spread and switch - spread and switch most of the day, if we kick it to 50 -50 contest and hope to win another contested ball we will struggle to get the ball inside 50, Looking forward to some dashes from Houli, Lids and the elite running (not fast but bloody runs all day) of Kamden M. Even the likes of Hunt and Lambert have added some zip this year....although Hunt some times does a Forest Gump and just runs without any pre notion of where he is going.. run Forest run.

The main thing's that worry me Re North at there best...

>Goldmember- Most likely dominate the ruck, give their onballers first use. Also a round the ground plays some great footy as a big marking target. Eevarn will struggle.

>Three strong tall marking FWDs. Petrie n Waite have smashed us in game's before. Ben Sideshow brown was a match winner for nth agin the Drug cheats in the elim final last year. Batch an Chappy not fantastic on tall strong marking lead up types.

>Their drop an extra tall back in the fwd line to kill most bombed entries.

One player we have could be used in any of the situation's if going badly against us.

Yes its Griff. But a huge risk that his body may not hold up.

So in short: North dominate in the air in all aspects of the game. But we beat them in every other way.

Umpires + Sunny day should favour them this week.

More, they may get on top in one of these areas, if they do it would be better to have an option to close it down than just rely on us being able to outscore them regardless.

Marking could be very difficult on Sunday. Its very windy today and predicted to be windier on Sunday.
