you blokes aren't gettin' it.

stop defining Houli by his religion.

he's a man, a footballer, possibly a gamer, a dude who likes raspberry bullets.

who the *smile* cares?

why do you blokes keep going on about it?

It is only relevant because Bachar used it in his defence.

He is also a Muslim which is something he chooses to discuss publicly ,and mentioned himself in regard to this incident and a fact that was mentioned in the testaments at he tribunal.

he used it in the context of being a peaceful man. no reason for bringing it up ad nauseum.

Re: Bachar "The Nice Guy" Houli

Our lawyer is pushing the good bloke off field angle hard. Not sure it will work. Not sure how it's a better defence than he hasn't been suspended in his whole career which directly goes to his intent with the action.

it is an element of his defence, it does not define him.

anthony miles is a devout christian but would that be mentioned and lampooned if he were up on the same charge? I highly doubt it Rosy.

the excitable chatter on this board is cringeworthy.

I like what the tribunal said in that AFL didn't object at the time when character reference was given so its relevant. Awesome!

Ablett and Gold Coast's so-called 'God Squad' are mocked constantly.

Geez, Ablett senior dobbed himself in and said God wouldn't let him live it down otherwise!

Agree. There is a fundamental difference between laughing at someone's religion and thinking they are not as good as you or a bad person because of that religion. Plus your joke was about owning it, getting in their faces. Besides, its pretty obvious this circus is due, at least in part, because of Bachar's religion. Can't ignore it.

There's also an element of how comfortable someone is with differing religions and not finding the topic much different to who they support etc. Living in a region where there is a even balance between buddists, muslims and hindus, where christians are a minority, the subject of religion is definitely not taboo and often the source of humour when a group of friends from differing religions get together. It's all about tolerance and acceptance. When you've got that, religion isn't a taboo topic.

Re: Bachar "The Nice Guy" Houli

You can see RFC smashing the AFL on every angle and the penalty still increasing.

Geez we have been superb this week.

I think he's more pushing that it was relevant and admissible and not objected to at the time which means that it should not be a cause for changing the original decision.

Re: Bachar "The Nice Guy" Houli

I'm as anti-religion as they come but personally I didn't mind Houli mentioning his piety the way he did. It demonstrated his sincerity that it was way out of character that he clubbed someone.

missing the point yet again.

a disproportionate percent of the commentary on Houli is based on his religion.

this factor is only a small part of tribunal proceedings (and what he represents) but within a predominantly white cultural forum (and media at large) it is positioned front and centre this week.

of course poking fun at religion shouldn't be taboo, but that doesn't explain it's presence on this thread.

you are defining Houli by his religiosity and it is as predictable as it is tiresome.

No different to e.g. commentary on Mason Cox hailing from the USA. It's a unique characteristic about someone we don't know much else about, so it gets repeated endlessly.

"I think if you were American you got a free kick there for a while."
