I'm more worried by the muppets in mainstream media... The on air people leading the crusade like this is a clash of civilisations. Statements like... You should boo Houli not because he is a Muslim but because he is thug. If it was B Ellis or Short who hit him it would Be a sports pages only discussion.

I share your concern. They are almost egging the crowds to boo him so they have a further story to write about and crap on about when it happens.

Re: Bachar "The Nice Guy" Houli

Turns 30 next season, not sure where his contract is at currently.
Through this unfortunate incident, it will be a good opportunity to see how much we do indeed rely on him.
He's been great value since being picked up in the 2010 PSD (thanks Bombers) but at some stage we've go to start grooming a replacement.
Great fella, talented footballer & great clubman but list management decisions are always being made..

Edit: (currently signed until end of 2018)

Re: Bachar "The Nice Guy" Houli

Anyone else find it interesting/amusing that one of the people on the tribunal is Wayne 'the Moose' Henwood, a head hunter of the highest order in his playing days with the Swans. I still have fond memories of the day he tried to clean up Tony Free and came off second best.

I did, due to Lamb's body slightly dropping as Houli pulled away & in the same action Houli was throwing arm back to break tackle. I reckon if it didn't it might've hit him in the shoulder..

Fair enough, still reckless or careless at the least though AB

Re: Bachar "The Nice Guy" Houli

Have to wonder what effect this is having on Bacha.

All he did, was to front the tribunal, copped his ban of two weeks and that was that.

Has done and said nothing since.

Surely all this vitriol and almost hatred towards him may be affecting him mentally.

Now, some are expecting the opposition crowds to boo him.

Stay strong Bacha and if you decide enough is enough and decide to retire then so be it.

Not that I have any indication that may be his thinking.

All the adverse publicity surrounding him he can hopefully cope with.

Have not read anywhere so far, or heard support for him as a person.

Well, here is one person who wishes him well no matter what the outcome of the kangaroo court comes up with.

I post this not as a Richmond member but someone who has concern for his well being.

My comments certainly don't reflect on Bachar as a person. I don't know him. Shame it's turned into such a circus but surely most people are judging his on-field actions, and the outcome of them, rather than judging him personally. I hope he's back playing soon.

If he'd hit him with the arm going to punch the ball then I'd agree with you, but it was the opposite one that came around and round housed him. A clear intentional punch.

If he went for him with the arm then I'd say the opposite. I don't know too many who try and punch a ball with a round arm, it's always the fist. There is no way Greene intentionally went for the head, the ball was there, he was blind-sided and Caleb is about 4 foot. 2 weeks was the right punishment for that one. It's just a lottery these days. Players get punished for AFL being a sport that has a lot of hard physical contact. It's BS really and anyone who has played a reasonably high level of footy knows what I'm talking about.

Accurate. His action resulted in a consequence. As soon as he threw his arm back recklessly, if it went awry, he was gonna be in trouble.

Exactly. Reckless and he was given two weeks. This whole politicising of this event is frankly very sad. What has footy become?

This is the key point for me and impacts a lot on future reports. What exactly do they mean by intentional?

1 - Intentionally hit Lamb
2 - Intentionally hit Lamb in the head

Big difference between the 2 IMO. If its 2 then fine, intentional. If its 1, then if he intentionally hit him but accidentally hit him in the head, is it still graded intentional?

Big impact going forwards, think of the bump. Every bump intentionally targets a player, just unfortunate that sometimes this hits the player high. The AFL have history with this and rarely grade these as intentional. Therefore you choose to bump but if we think you accidentally hit the player in the head then the MRP will grade it careless, but for Bachar, not so. They had to be confident that he meant to hit him in the head. I can't see where they can be sure of that, so sort of indicates that if you intend to hit someone and just happen to hit them in the head then this should now be classified as intentional.

Thats a big change from the way any sort of incident has been graded in the past.

Pretty obvious which one it is. If it was intentional to the head there's no way they would have given him just 2 weeks.

Rosy, my comments were in no way a criticism of any posts made by PREnders, just my take on possible effect it may be having on Bacha. Nothing to do with his on field action or the decision of the tribunal.

Re: Bachar "The Nice Guy" Houli

I can't believe the AFL is appealing this. They didn't like it when some organization appealed a decision regarding 34 drug cheats but now when they don't like the umpires decision, they use the appeals process. This has been dragged on long enough and we're all sick and tired of it. Let Houli move on with his life. He's a good, brave man.

Political pressure maybe? Something ain't quite right. There's nothing extraordinary about this incident, it's not a Barry Hall scenario.

I'm with you. AFL is ok to clear 34 drug cheats that intentionally deceived ASADA, yet they think two weeks for a bloke shrugging a tackle and accidentally collecting a guy is "manifestly inadequate". That is some serious *smile* right there.

If Houli still donned a red sash the AFL would have insisted the PM be brought in for him. Julian Burnside would describe him as a hero.

Massive storm in a tea cup. People carrying on about character witnesses for a good guy, but plenty of d!ckheads have receive seemingly light sentences and we all move on and blame the system, not the man. Bachar is getting pasted by nongs wanting 15 seconds of air time (like Nathan Jerk) and it's starting to have an Ugly Australian whiff about it. "I'm not racist, BUT...."

Manifestly inadequate. Revisit your tribunal history AFL. You'll find plenty of more glaring examples than this one.

Move on,

Kind of strange that they're celebrating the 'big hits' in football tonight on foxfooty Carrying on fondly about incidents where players had jaws broken and horrible concussions. And these were huge deliberate hits where unsuspecting players were lined up and poleaxed. And some of the same commentators laughing and rejoicing in these hits are the same ones trying to take the moral high ground with Bachar.

I don't get it. it's really bizarre.

great post Taraba. Saw the ad for Big Hits and thought exactly the same thing. The AFL and the footy media just keep piling on reasons for me to hate them.

Re: Bachar "The Nice Guy" Houli

Coincidence that Barry Hall on the front page of AFL.com saying 'I could've killed him'?

I don't reckon. it's an orchestrated, political campaign, and the bloke with the funny beard is the perfect fall guy.

This appeal is unprecedented. On face value, it seems a strange hill to die on.

but the AFL is a very strange organisation.

Kind of a cross between the Romans, Mary Antoinette, The Masons and The footy show

Re: Bachar "The Nice Guy" Houli

If I was Houli I'd come out on the front foot today and suspend myself for 4 weeks. That'll stuff the afl and the media.
