Alex Rance

good review Scoop.
one thing i reckon you missed though was the improvement Rance showed in actually defending. before last year he was pretty hopeless one-on-one. couldn't use his body and was easily outmarked. this changed last year. he still needs another round of improvement i think as he is still outmarked to easily on occasion, but he is way better than 2010.

Last year was a massive improvement. A quantum leap.

He still has some things to improve on for sure. One thing I have noticed is that when he gets his opponent behind him one on one he tends to get out marked a lot from the back. He is much better when he gets momentum to the contest or spoils from behind so he needs to work on that.

The other thing that improved enormously in 2011 was his overhead marking. In 2010 and before he seemed to lack confidence above his head and went for marks with very hard hands. He must have worked really hard on that.

Another thing, I reckon his inside work is good, I've seen him do some eye-poppingly good things in heavy traffic. Can't remember specifics, but there were a couple in particular when I was genuinely stunned when I realised it was Rance haring out of a pack.

x2. And Sins comments about improved marking.

Rance improved immensely last year but he came off a very low base. Needs a couple more years of improving before we can start to call for his AA inclusion.

I'm not getting carried away, and agree with the low base assessment. But even without too much more improvement, (but from what he's shown us I think he will keep improving) reckon we've found a player who can play part long term. I think he is one driven bloke.

I think Rance is more suited to the 3rd tall position more than anything.Thats where the problem lies with us.
We should look at Post at FB and Griffiths at CHB.

What about Grimes?

He was much more than serviceable last year.

No he wasn't. He was just so shocking before that it merely appeared that he was. Not knocking him though as think he's still tracking to become a good player.

Yes he was. Given the spanking our rucks and midfield cosistently copped he managed to keep plenty of good players under wraps. While doing that he also managed to provide good rebound and showed inspirational courage routinely. Statistically (I know, I know) he was excellent in terms of spoils, marks, disposals and rebound 50's. If that's serviceable I'm Jimi Hendrix.

Well better start chopping down that mountain with the edge of your hand then. ;)

Servicable doesn't mean he was bad in my book, it just means he was at least up to AFL level, whereas previously he looked like he wasn't. Did some good things, did some bad things but on balance was solid, not a liability and cemented a place in the 22. Still has many areas of his game to work on if he's to truly take it to the next level, though.

From poor to servicable isn't that dramatic.

I reckon he went from very poor, to good. Someone who I personally would have cut, to someone I believe is important to the side. I for one reckon thats dramatic. I reckon he's going to improve more, but you couldn't reasonably expect such dramatic improvement again, steady from here on.

good points, he was in the pressure-cooker, and he stood up tremendously considering age, experience and support around him.

I actually see Rance more likely at CHB skipper am hoping Grimes shows he can become our FB in time.
Be good to have a tall defender as well. Am hoping Post might be the answer but the jury is out for me.
