2024 Richmond Coach

The club runs a tight ship these days, we still have no idea who the candidates are.

I'm not sure Mini is the man and remember what happened when the players last endorsed someone we ended up with a young vibrant Lennon.

Skipworth if he's applied is my smokey

Interviews or chats can be held over Zoom with bin-lurkers none the wiser other than a bit of chatter. But prospective coaches are wary about being overlooked as it seems to harm their chances next time, so maybe there's not much chatter including from their managers.

looks nothing like Hafey did,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,But what the heck if he can snag us another four flags...........................

Was just going to post I heard that Josh Carr is going to be the man. If it came from Big Footy though then it's probably complete crap.

If that's the case then what the hell are they doing? So much for Hardwick finishing up to give us plenty of time to get things moving for next year.

There's no way McQualter can get the job. He had an opportunity to put a stamp on the side and show his potential and instead has delivered Hardwick lite.

If this was a couple of years ago there is no way McRae would have coached us the way McQualter is in the same situation.

He's actually made measurable tweaks. More than I would have thought possible. New routines at Training. Some things working (i.e. more scoring), some not - midfield and transition defensively is not working as well.

Doesn't need to change the game plan , but last week he couldn't even see the basics put a tag on Bompt he was killing us , or the lack of intensity in games and poor quarters. We have been out of games for large parts and then wake up prime example hawks. The selection is still the same the favourites only of late kids come in.

Don’t know if it’s just me, but reckon there is too much coming from the players and the odd media pump up story, to suggest that the job is all but certain to go to Mini. Cotchy even dropped the ‘special’ word.

What is a concern is even in the games we lost in previous times it was only a by a goal or so , now the losses are becoming thrashing’s

Dimma is a master at sandbagging a margin. We've been thrashed by 20 points plenty of times under him.

He tried 3 blokes on Bont he said, none worked. We don’t have a player that has been developed as a tagger.
Bulldogs and Brisbane the blowouts, you being a little harsh other than that

We have the perfect player Mansell tuff , hard and a pest , but we play him as a forward there's your player. We just refuse to lock down a player the week before Ward of gws took him out of the game.

How does one change the game plan mid season?

I wouldn't use the term game plan, I think that's a very confused concept in the footy world. Goes with the infamous 'plan B' comments.

What I would have liked to see is what his philosophy on the game is. For example if you asked me about Hardwick I would say he favours turnover over clearance, so will concede an outnumber at the ball in order to have a plus one back. Then he relies on his player's work rate to apply pressure at the ball to create turnover in the back half. Once they win the ball he plays launch football, with minimal defensive structure maintained behind the attack.

If you asked me about McRae I would say he will accept alternate plus ones back but won't concede the extra at stoppage. His players use different speed of ball movement depending on the situation, and will only go quickly once they are set defensively behind the attack which allows them to use the corridor without being hurt on the turnover.

If you asked me about Chris Scott I could talk about how he structures the ruck/wing/key forwards to create the structure he wants, Ross Lyon I could talk about maintaining a have defensive structure at all costs, and never allowing the opposition to take away your plus one, and so on and so on.

With the heavy rider I've seen most of his work via a mobile phone strapped to bike handlebars while I hauled my fat arse around the Tour De France course, it seems to me he has just run the side on auto pilot. The only adjustments I have seen is the typical caretaker line of 'freeing them up' which is basically code for guys being more unaccountable and cheating forward at the expense of defensive structures.

It's not 'game plan' in the sense of taking over the Mighty Ducks and coming up with the flying V that makes you instantly unstoppable, but we should be able to see what McQualter believes about the game.

At the moment I would say he believes what Hardwick believes which is only natural but also why he is the wrong person for the job in my opinion.

Great post TBR. I agree.

How hard do you think it would be for Mini to change from the turnover > clearance strategy to, say, a one on one strategy or even number at stoppage strategy? How drilled are the players at the specific strategy they are performing? Would a change just fail so miserably as the players are so drilled to the former plan that it makes Mini look even worse?

My hope is that he is selling a different game plan to the coach selection committee, even though he's not currently coaching it. If he is just spruiking the DImma 2.0, I'm well off him.

I don't think it would be hard at all. Under Hardwick we have regularly implemented different styles. Think it was last year we played a block of games (and won them) with a massive increase in uncontested marks, a real kick-mark, kick-mark Collingwood Buckley style of play.

At the very least I would have liked to see some movement on what I think is our greatest weakness under Hardwick and the thing that is hurting us the most now, and that is developing an ability to play different modes with the ball.

What I mean by that is under Hardwick you win the ball and you go. The plus one stays deepest and everyone else has licence to kill. Doesn't matter if it was off a quick play or a slow play, if it is first minute of the game or the last 30 seconds of the quarter.

At our best we could get away with it because if we didn't win the ball forward (which was a rare if), we had Rance or Grimes or Vlastuin or Astbury that would provide a mighty defence if it bounced back.

As our ability to win those forward contests has declined, so has our ability to defend behind it just through natural attrition of those stars so we get caught a lot on what they call the turnover turnover. They give it up, we give it back and then they score. The type of goals that come when teams stream forward into a relatively open forward line.

I would have loved McQualter to address that like McRae has at Collingwood. Have modes where you win the ball and go slow, because you aren't set up defensively to charge. Basically it is defending when you have the ball. Or the other one we have never done which has cost us a lot of percentage over the years, take minutes out of the game when you are well up with slow ball use.

Really easy to implement, just a mindset change when you have the ball in your hand.

Fair enough. If you are right and it is possible to change and Mini didn't have the balls or brains (or licence) to do it, then he can't get the job. It's as simple as that.

FWIW I've heard from a players close relative that Josh Carr is held in high regard by those that matter.

Plenty of support coming from the players for Mini. Which is fine. Great that they respect him and support him. But that should only be one perspective and I would like the players to caveat their support with "but the club has a process and we will support whoever the club decides is the best candidate"
