2024 - List Management

I

It’s where we find many of our Premiership heroes.
Minimum chips too
And yet we’ve hardly used it in recent times. 3 players in the last 5 years and one of them was Nyuon who we rookied after delisting.

This is another reason why I think we’ve dropped the ball regarding list management in recent times.

Not sold on OHB, but reckon the rest are great pickups.

10/10 for the club on this from me.

When should we plan to play finals again?

Our last successful rebuild began in 2006 and we arrived at base camp in 2013, so 7 years later.

If 2021 is the new 2006, then we'd be looking at 2028 as year 1 of the next window opening up.

It's not as simple as copy and pasting a template, but for comparison our last window was open for 5 seasons before we won our 1st flag with that group. That would put us at 2032 for the next planned premiership year.

Going by that, we should plan around players under the age of 24 for this next push. That means Taranto and Hopper are in the Daniel Jackson / Chris Newman role. Broad in the Bowden role. Lynch in the Richo role. Nankervis in the Ivan Maric role.

It was smart list management to trade out players who will be 26, 27, and 28 years old next year. The club has seen this movie before. It can be studied on DVD.

Bring on 2028-2032!

Smart list management to trade out 26, 27 year olds? Sorry that’s nonsense. It wasn’t our choice, it was the players who wanted out. Nothing to do with planned List Management. Or Blair giving them a nudge. I know it’s been mentioned but it’s hogwash.

Otherwise for the next 4 or 5 years we keep trading that age demographic out as well? Then from 2028 we keep them? :giggle:
If you went back to 2013- 2020 and did the same, we would have been lucky to win anything.

As at 25/10/24. our list looks as follows:

Steely Green
Medium ForwardsJacob Bauer
Tall ForwardsLiam FawcettJacob KoschitzkeMykelti LefauTom Lynch
Campbell Gray
RucksSamson RyanMate ColinaToby Nankervis
Oliver Hayes-Brown

We've got 27 senior listed players
We've got 7 rookies
2 Cat B (max outside our list)

As Taztiger put above, we need minimum 36 on the list.
No more than 6 rookies.
No more than 2 Cat B.

We've got room for 9 more on the list.
With Dow delisted replaced by Campbell, we'd still be at 27 but be at the max 6 rookies.

Plenty of room for more moves before the list lodgement on 31st October.
No real surprises on where the gaps in our list are, and without rating the players quality, we can see other areas we need to cover asap.

This might be a dumb question, but we had 7 rookies when we are only allowed 6……..:bash

Nice bit of clear analysis tho - thanks

They were the 2 MSD draftees that took it above the max 6. Thats allowable as all MSD picks are basically rookie picks, replacing a main listed player through injury. At the end of the year when that main listed player becomes active again, the lists need to be rebalanced back to the rookie list only having between 4 and 6 players.

We had folks put on long term injury, which allowed us to get the Cat B players (Blight and Grey).
We need to get back under for next year i believe. Mr P might be able to correct me if I'm wrong there.

Losing the 25-27 year olds now is not such a bad thing (I now consider in hindsight). Whether it was intentional or not is no longer relevant. What it does mean is the crop of youngsters we bring in over the next few drafts won’t have to wait in line forever before they get game time - whilst the players who are in their prime get to play out their careers.

In terms of age and picks, it's also offsets the Taranto and Hopper trades. We brought in those two with the intention of prolonging our finals window indefinitely.

We pressed Control + Z.

Really, we're just buying back the future we traded away in 2022. Plus one extra going out. It's like we kept our draft picks, and then traded out 1 premiership player.

If you think about it, this is consistent with how we approached the 2021 draft as part of a broader window of drafts. In isolation, our 2021 picks look stacked, but really we were just paying forward our draft value from previous years to cash it all in during the one draft - it creates a false sense of bountiful draft value if you don't view it in context of the preceding drafts.

Blight n Gray weren't Cat B players, that's Maaaaate n OHB. Blight n Gray as mid season draftees might have been categorised as rookies on the list because they were short term replacements for the long term injury players, but def not Cat B.

Yeah, slip of the keyboard. Just rookies taken in the mid year draft. Proof I can't multi task!
