2024 Draft Thread

Tonight we picked five blokes who at one point this year were considered top 5 picks.

We did not play it safe. Home run swings.

You were the first person I thought when the trade happened.

Nice of you to get something right I suppose.

Agree with a fair bit of that Leysey. I don't think we expected all the mids/runners to go between our 4th and 5th picks. Think they rate Hotton's movement to be back to pre-ACL levels (which it should) but he's not a great kick/decision maker (watch round 1 vs Calder - 3 shots on goal in 1st 2 mins for 0 goals and decision making in 2nd quarter is poor), but then neither was Shedda early days and he has a bit of him about him. I'm okay with that pick for upside but would have done it at pick 18.

I've been really high on Trainor and happy to take him there. Top 5 pick mid year and his concussion issues are overblown. Pedigree is elite, as are his foot skills. Previously a forward so can transition back there if needed for team balance. Solid option. Will be a player.

Once we got to the next pick you had to take Armstrong as the mids were gone. I'm not a Faull fan (doesn't hold enough contested marks for a 1st rounder and kicking is poor) and we could have got him with our later picks for sure but Armstrong and Faull are very different so they work togehter at least.

I'd love to see us trade back 5 or so picks again, pick up a bonus selection this/next year and then draft Dodson. Think he is a good long term prospect in an area of need,

On their own the picks you say make sense Fox Catcher.

But when you add them together, along with our now woeful midfield/run, together with how many talls you actually need on the ground.

Reckon we've overshot an area that if short you can fill by trades or smart later drafting. Just about every recent premiership shows that. Daniher, Mihocek, Brown, Andrews, Stewart, Cameron, May etc. You don't need to go (especially repeatedly) early.

It's a philosophical thing for me. Ground ball game wins pressure finals matches. Rarely is it decided overhead.

If we swap say Faull for - insert any of Berry, Allan, Hynes, Oliver, Hannaford (who were all gone by 5th pick) the balance looks better. Little doubt we miscalculated that.

1000%. That was the pick that was a head scratcher. When 2 top 14 picks aren't even in the room (which is surveyed with clubs by the AFL) you know you've reached a bit. If that pick is Allan/Berry/Oliver and we still get Armstrong and/or Shanahan/Whitlock/Dodson with our next pick the draft looks very different. Hindsight is wonderful.

Who will give us what for Jack Whitlock?

Blair dangled pick #11 but did not get the right offer. So he took Faull. He was dangling all night. We call Fages Teabags coz he'd have a few in his pocket but FMD Blair was teabagging all night.

Finally he dangled #24 and Norfs bit hard.

Who's the next victim? It's Rosa, isn't it? (Unless his new friend Blofeld is helping him again.)

Matt Rosa. Come on down.

Two first round picks for next year sets us up well for the 2025 draft.
Who are the best of the rest, or do we trade pick our 2nd round pick 1 tomorrow?

shifter couldnt believe he was still there at 23 :ROFLMAO:
Alright to be sarcastic/cynical about things but we got an exclusive cross to Geish at the club function post draft and when asked what the biggest surprise at who was available at our pick it was Armstrong who we rated in the 5-7 category also getting Norths future 1st was a bonus for future planning.
Also said Lalor CLEARLY # 1 ranked and Smillie at 6 and an easy button to push, have followed his progress for years.

Will say it again. Norf are between a rock and a hard place.

Just like WCE during trade week, they have the choice of having to eat up a lot ....or eat up a lot less.

They can't just keep 2 and use it on Tauru and that's it. Done. They have to get another pick in this draft somehow and that's where they'll have to suck it up a bit in a trade with someone for the sake of avoiding a totally overs and inefficient outcome.

And they will. Just watch. They'll accept a trade with someone, of some sort or another, on draft night.
Bwaaaaah haaargh haaaargh haaargh.....Noorf !

Sorry, but if Armstrong was rated in the 5-7 category there is no way we take Faull first (at 14). Posturing at it's finest.

Reckon we did pretty well. However would have liked to have seen another mid; not sure we needed to draft both Faull and Armstrong. Our midfield is putrid. Love the look of Lalor and Smillie and they are a great start but we need more and would’ve like another tonight.

Will need to use the two first rounders on gun mids next year.

Faull was on somebody else's radar. We nabbed him. Armstrong? Got through to us.

Faull is macho. We're not the only club who noticed.

Fans may have copped Armstrong then Faull. But Faull is the only rugged tall forward in this draft. Crucially with Faull, despite an injury damaged season he got right - and then levelled up. He closed the season very strongly proving that he was better than his earlier injury damaged numbers showed.

Somebody else was on Faull. Twomey says Sydney. I think another as well.

How many of his goals are from true contested marks DIY?
