Lalor and Smillie were locked a while ago. Starting mids. That's to be their job. We bust if they do. We took two starting mid prospects. You only play three.

Most AFL clubs will now tell you that you need up to 12 mids each week Dye'searhair.

I'd love to see us trade back 5 or so picks again, pick up a bonus selection this/next year and then draft Dodson. Think he is a good long term prospect in an area of need,

I reckon trading back is the play, but not sure Dodson is the target. Not sure we take a ruck.

How about we trade back with Saints, 28 for 32 and F2, then trade back from 32 to 42 with Geelong and get their F1?

I'd be happy with taking speed with our next one, Hayes, Unwin. Maybe Day-Wicks?

OK, Leysy's gunna play the grinch.

Like to think am reasonably centered and level headed when it comes to being positive/negative when comes to supporting our club. But can't help but come away feeling somewhat disappointed with tonight.

Am not going to go hard at the player taken as understand how much goes into it from the club vs what leysy sees from watching the odd game live and replays on Coates/AFL app - (though Faull at 12 Vs Viking at 8 seems way too small given the discrepancy in talent/ceiling).

But more so where our list is at Vs what we have got in tonight.

We've lost all our best run and spark footballers - Bakes, Shai, Daniel (and Dusty) The one's who overlap and create. They are the type that create scoring opportunities and therefore win you games of football in this era.

This adding to the worst midfield in the country. By a mile. So getting to our draft tonight:

- First two picks - midfield bulls with footskills and other qualities. No issue.
- Then a transition runner - fine. But in rehab coming off a knee with 5 other mates on the list doing the same?
- Then a tall, who whilst having a well-rounded game, leaves some elite running talent on the board.
- All other clubs go small. Not a tall taken between 11 and 18 which means remaining high quality running players/mids are all gone (bar Dattoli - who's pace in ? mark). Not sure we budgeted that.
- Take Trainor - Great talent but a key back, less of a need than rest of the list. Concussion risk.
- Take Armstrong - went at about where his mark is ( ridiculed earlier for suggesting so). But another 195cm forward to add to Faull, Gray, Lefau, Fawcett, Bauer etc.

Then trade out with North. Fantastic trade. Blair's wheelhouse and well played.

Overall snapshot - We've gone tall and slow when the league is moving short and fast. GWS - Run, Run, Run with there three picks. Sydney same. Apart from a knee reco recovery we have added nothing to replace what we've lost.

In fact, until the final pick we were the only team tonight to take anyone 195cm or more (3 times). Not one other club did. Not once.

This from a team that had the worst midfield/running team, which is about to get a hell of a lot worse. The contrast from 17-20 to now is staggering.

Yes we can start to address that chronic run in coming years. But we have a completely unbalanced list that is against where football is moving. We are in for some fearful beltings next year.

I'm not big on the draft, don't follow any junior footy or the like. The points you make are valid and clearly there is a risk in taking the bigger players we have chosen.

Football is currently very quick, that seems to be the winning formula for the moment.

But, we won 3 flags not by following what was happening at the time, but by developing the next shift in strategy.

Are Yze and co trying to create the next shift in strategy? Who knows, but we don't want to be developing a group of players who, by 2028, could win the 2025 flag. We need to be developing them to be the right players for how the game develops in a few years.

I have no idea how the game will develop over the next 4-8 years, but that is our time-line and I hope that we are setting something up to get a jump on the rest of the comp in 4-8 years.

Time will tell and you may well be correct, a draft hand like we have used tonight is a great opportunity. Great opportunities are always risky.

Actually agree that a speedy mid/forward is a better option but I would have done that earlier and then could take the Ruck now. Dodson has huge upside now that he's fully committed to football. And who is Nank's replacement? (please don't say Sampson Ryan). Yes you can trade for them but it's still good to have 1 in the nursery.

No nothing like ashcroft hotton was a simple running change of direction zero contact acl! These type of acl are generally the highest chance of repeat injury better than 50/50 chance of reinjury. The ashcroft one had max holmes impacting him to cause the acl

I'm ok with missing Dattoli and Hynes. I like em but not enough zip for mine. I prefer the zip.

We already took Lefau, Gray, Bauer, Fawcett in recent drafts.

Now two more. Add Lynch and there aint enough room to play them at AFL/VFL level.

We don't just need more mids, we moreso need run and class. Especially forward of the ball where we're also worst in the league.

Anyway, we've zigged and the rest have zagged. We'll look like geniuses if it ever returns to a talls forwards league (unlikely) or be anchored with a slow static team when everyone else is fast.

All those mids we drafted tonight are better than Dow right now. He only gets a game next year if we have a dozen injuries in our midfield ranks.

What's your take on Trainor?

I'm actually quite bullish on Trainor Old Man. He's a handy size, has great skills/decision making, versatile, reads the play/ball in the air very well. Good overhead. Decent competitive instincts. I think we freak out about concussions these days but ACL's carry just as much/more risk unless you have had multiple concussions in a short period. Love our backline (keys) with Balta, Gibcus and Trainor for the next 10 years. Set.
