2024 Draft Thread

For what its worth I really like and rate Travaglia and hope we get him...absolute gut runner.

His attack on the ball and follow up is just like my kelpie chasing a ball at the dog park...nothing is going to stop him getting it.
What will be happening now is tactical decisions based on what we think other clubs are doing.
It could be that we think Smillie is a good chance to fall to 10 but there are players we rate at 10/11 who probably won’t.
What Twomey would be hearing about is any late contacts between clubs and players.

is it just me, or are most of Lalor's highlights of him taking marks up fwd and kicking goals. i dont see many centre clearances, ball up clearances and midfield work in his highlights. thats a little worrying considering we want a gun midfielder with pick 1......

Heres Lalor full highlights package
Including clearances

Shanahan's VFL performances need to be taken in context and a grain or two of salt.

They were dominant walkovers - 70 points victories in both.

His teams attacking forays were largely training drill stuff. Any forward with half a degree of ability could have got on the end of chains similar to Shanahan.

He does have some tools, but his VFL performances aren't the one's to build any case in the "for" column.
Still had to find the football and put it through the sticks. He wouldn't have trained a lot with those clubs, so fitting into a forward line with unfamiliar players isn't a trivial exercise. You're trivialising the challenges.

You've missed the point though.
We can't value one players performance against *men* and say it doesn't count for others. Either the theory works for all, or none.

Rate Shanahan highly - he's got great forward craft, is physical and a really nice kick as well. He's probably my no.1 fwd though I also really like J.Whitlock, Armstrong, Sims, Nicholls

Cal now saying we are 50/50 between Picking Smillie or Bo Allan at Pick 6
He is struggling this year. I rate his mail above everyone else - but its a different year this year with multiple clubs having multiple first round picks - including us with 8 - telling him nothing.

Allan was a lock at #10. Taylor menacing the pick at #9. (It's possible we've just found out.) We pivot? Take Allan at #6 and wait on Smillie at #10.

Looks logical.

It's definitely harder for him.

But suspect cos he lined us up with players that aren't popular he's copping a fair bit on here - no idea, has it in for us etc etc.

He'll nut it out and get the top 10 at a minimum pretty much spot on as always.

Controversial take. :peepwall The tall forwards in this draft are more likely the calibre of Hughes, Vickery, Post, Griffiths, Elton...rather than Riewoldt or Lynch. The one I would take a chance on is Faull because he busts packs and follows up at ground level.

That makes no sense.

So everyone who has performed against men needs to be weighted together?

Of course not. There are heaps of nuances in state league performance that need to be taken into consideration.

Team performance, standard of league, role, how that will translate to AFL among a heap of others.

Wonder if Shanahan wasn't picked to go to us by Twomey if you'd be as defensive of Shanahan.

So you're saying the top 10 in his Phantom draft will be accurate? Not saying you're wrong but will make interesting reading..

Maybe. But he'll be doing half hourly updates right up to go-time. And even then he'll be saying 'I knew it would be like this if player X went at that pick etc etc'. I like him, he's grown on me, but his I told you so's can be a bit annoying. past performance is no guarantee of future performance.

Twomey is getting mail right now. I don't think it's from a player or a player manager. (That stuff seems old now.) I think it's from a club or clubs.

I don't really care which of the keys we take Leysy. I know the clubs got a lot more of a clue than anyone here about what we need to support Yze's plans and what we feel the players will furnish as. I'm not wedded to any particular player.

There seems to be 2 tiers of quality with the keys, after Tauru.
Shanahan, WhitlockJ, Armstrong, maybe Faull. I'm confident we'll take at least 1.

All I care about is we get 1 KPF before we get table scraps.
