2024 Draft Thread

It is a pretty loose connection but we should bid in order of the best available in the first round at least. The Viking imo is the second best player in this draft, just behind Ashcroft, and I believe we should bid on them in that order.

On this site and elsewhere there has been a focus on mids and utilities. We have traded out our 3 best and as it happens there are plenty of really good young mids
available, certainly through the first round.
I have Marshall in the top 12 and believe we should bid on him around there. If we have bid on Ashcroft at one it is pretty likely that the Marshall bid would be successful with Brisbane passing.
One of Langford or Lindsay at 6, then Allan near Marshall at 12, also likely available at those points.
Tauru, Langford or Lindsay, Allan and Marshall would imo be an excellent start the night and to our rebuilding.
I’ve been calling for Richmond to bid on Ashcroft at 1 and Marshall early. I’ve watched him live 3 times and I am convinced he’ll be a star. Finally glad someone else is calling it out. Pick 11 for Marshall would be a great get.

Jeez, that McGowan article on why no one should even think of touching FOS before our pick 6 was pretty vague and weak. Not even a hint of a mention of his heroin and fire-bombing habits.

This keeps bringing me back to the last time we had a bucket full of early picks, we picked mid sized players with one slowish ruck towards the end of the 1st while the dorks went the 2 best talls and then a mid in their first 3 picks inside top 10 (in 2004?)

There is something about Tauru and I think to aim to get 2 of the best talls with our first 4 picks could be a wise strategy.

I have my heart set on the Jagga / Langford combo first then was hoping for a Tauru / Armstrong / Whitlock combo with the next 2 but not sure that is possible - so I really like your thinking on Marshall?

The good thing is we have options that hopefully match our strategy which I now trust the club to implement.

You know, Cherry Ripes used to be made with pumpkin and flavouring, as cherries were too expensive (True story). I learned this on a tour at Cadbury.

Those Cherry Ripes are a great analogy for drafting.

Sometimes you buy something with an expectation. But when you unwrap it and go to sink your teeth into it, you find it's full of imitation cheap *smile* and something you weren't expecting. It might give you an occasional sugar hit, but it's not the real McCoy.

Just like Pumpkins DeGooey.

The original & by far the best Cherry Ripes were made by MacRobertsons in Fitzroy before moving to Ringwood.
MacRobertsons would never use substitutes in their products. Obviously the same can't be said for Cadbury. :))

The original Cherry Ripes were the GOAT just like the one and only Dusty. :)) :))

Absolutely. Bizarre article. You've got reams of stuff from recruiters, coaches etc validating in glowing terms both his off field and on field standards, then this contradictory one line sentence that has no explanation behind it at all. And speaking of "drive" the kid has been driving the whole state (and beyond) for years now, spending dozens of hours in the car often at times just to go to training.

Pretty much a career footballer since he could walk. Yeah.....he really screams lack of drive. What a *smile* article. Still says that Richmond could take him at 1 ffs !

There are reports that FOS went home one day after a losing game and walked straight past the cat without even kicking it. Is he driven enough?

This was FOS on the way home from a training session that didn't meet standards.

There are 7 locked in for top 9 (outside bids):

Lalor, Jagga, Smillie, Langford, Draper, FoS, Tauru.

Is he a lock to go in the next 2 picks before our 10? Not sure about that, pretty even mix.
My guess is take out Smillie and the other 6 are definitely going top 7. Smillie may go to us at 6 (7) or he may fall past 10. The next 3 are probably Lindsay, Armstrong and Reid.

Who knows after that.

The Viking is an enigma. You could describe him two ways depending if you loved or loathed him and both are correct. If you don’t like him he is an injury prone undersized defender with questionable decision making and foot skills. If you love him he is a versatile high flying superstar with the biggest upside in the draft. Player comparison, a more versatile Alex Rance. Neither statement is wrong but it sure paints a different picture. I personally love the way he plays but like others his injury record is concerning, especially the way he throws himself around.

Dattoli?? Reckon we have enough backmen already. Mids and more mids required and KPF
That's really interesting, Smillie ahead of Draper, I think with both Adelaide & Richmond overlooking there must be something going on with the character assessments.

Very few talls have a flawless recod at junior level, this is one class of player I would definitely take a half glass full approach. There's been plenty of talls who have shown less than Tauru. Marshall played one good game at state level, Jefferson also just the one standout performance, I think the biggest worry with Tauru would be his field kicking, but then again just look at Alex Rance, or Esava Ratugalea, you can definitely improve kicking once in an AFL environment.

Not sure on Reid and Armstrong inside 10.

Actually think both will go after that.

Expecting guys like Allan, Travaglia, J.Whitlock to push above them.
