2024 Draft Thread

Viking and Marshall?

It is a pretty loose connection but we should bid in order of the best available in the first round at least. The Viking imo is the second best player in this draft, just behind Ashcroft, and I believe we should bid on them in that order.

On this site and elsewhere there has been a focus on mids and utilities. We have traded out our 3 best and as it happens there are plenty of really good young mids
available, certainly through the first round.
I have Marshall in the top 12 and believe we should bid on him around there. If we have bid on Ashcroft at one it is pretty likely that the Marshall bid would be successful with Brisbane passing.
One of Langford or Lindsay at 6, then Allan near Marshall at 12, also likely available at those points.
Tauru, Langford or Lindsay, Allan and Marshall would imo be an excellent start the night and to our rebuilding.

No Faull?
My intel is they have interviewed Jonty at his home a couple of times…..
along with a few other clubs….
Hasn’t been given any reassurance from any club…

My very close source told me he wouldn’t be getting a draft invite before the announcement but the view is late first round/ early second which puts us…..
in the frame…

I may have a chance to catch him personally on draft night so if he is goes to the Tigers…
I’ll get a selfie with him…
If he goes to the Boos, Druggers or Scats….. I’ll go the kneecap….

Regards,
Stan

From The age this morning:
O’Sullivan is not a huge ball-winner and recruiters question whether he is as driven as others, believing also that he could be more professional in between games.

Good, please slide to 6 Finn! 🤗

I don’t think FOS is a midfielder. Does his best work on the outside. Watch him live, never gets 1st hands on midfield clearance. More of an outside player HFF.
What compete with his own team mate Jagga?
FOS played a different role at centre bounces. Jagga was designated first touch mid.
FOS is more a James Hird type - can play anywhere and turn matches.
Forward - Back - Mid

Selfie please Stan!
Sounds like he is in the frame, and depends who we get earlier

Maybe at this point we look to trade say 18 & 20 for pick 7, considering we have the chance to get both players,
Doubt Sts would go for 18&20.
A 10&23 would give them a little slider eg Reid or Armstrong and then a late tall. With 8 getting a mid too.
Perfect for them.

Sounds like the moaning about Budwa before his 1000th goal.

You don't post much, Stan, but it's always worth reading. Cheers.

Fox sports phantom is out. They have North taking FOS at 2 and trading their F1 for a pick to get a KPF
Lalor, Smillie, Lindsay, Armstrong, Dattoli, M.Whitlock and Oliver in the 1st round

Think I’d be happy with this. It’s far more balanced than some of the ones I’ve seen (which have had us taking 4+ talls) and there’s no obvious ‘overlookings’ with Jagga, FOS and Langford all off the board at 6 - I’d be happy enough for us to take Smillie over Draper, particularly if this clears the way for Lindsay to be available at our next pick.

I heard FOS was smoking joints with a bikie gang and was overhead to say, "*smile* ice baths, there's only one ice for me. Pass the pipe."

Dunno if it's true but no one should touch him. Only a club with several first round picks should take such a reckless risk as to draft him.

Some of the antics back in those days were mad house, here's a list of my greatest hits.

1. Coming in top place was copping a pile driver from a Samoan player who was getting frustrated by my 40 possession day out. I did get a free kick for that incident but that just encouraged him to kick me in the head during a ground ball contest.

2. I was followed from Punt Road up to Richmond train station by half an opposition team who were frothing at the mouth because I pinned someone in a perfectly executed tackle and bruised him up at little. Had to get the reinforcements to ensure my safe passage back to the Belgrave/Lilydale line.

3. Played in a Grand Final and went head to head with none other than the great Duncan Kellaway of the Glen Waverly Rovers, we lost by a kick, I took the points for 3 quarters and then the floodgates opened in the last. He was probably to the best player I played against whilst playing for MHS. No nasties from Duncan but he was a very physical player and not be be messed with.

4. Having a game cancelled against a technical college due to an excessive number of metallic objects found in the opposstion change rooms. Ninja movies were all the rage back in those days, as were the butterfly knives.

5. Being hip and shouldered in the head 10 metres off the ball in an away game which was the catalyst for my retirement from football. I never found my tooth either and have spent large sums on dental work ever since that incident.

On the topic of the MHS ground, it's tiny like the SCG, you could probably line up a goal from centre half back it's that small, in fact I think David Schwarz did roost one from that far back during a Sun Shield match in the early nineties. I was fortunate enough to see some elite talent pass through the gates at MHS, plenty of big names like Matthew Knights who helped me and a mate get into the Richmond change rooms, Paul Callery also helped in that regard. Stephen Ryan was a pretty good player, as was Stephen Tingay and Andy Lovell. High level footballers but still couldn't get the job done against Assumption College for some reason.
Gold! Love the oppo team following you. You should have had your replica Jack Dyer police issue revolver to warn them away.

Had my only concussion which was a delayed one against North Brunswick. Contested pack mark situation with a few of us sprawling forward. Receive a jolt in the back of the head. Little dizzy for 10 seconds or so. No biggee. Nice win in the wet. Had 2 beers after the game and headed home as I was to be baby sitting with my then girlfriend (now wife). Sitting in the kitchen at her parents having tea and slowly noticed my vision was acting up. Light didn’t seem awfully bright and I started developing tunnel vision. As in real, circular tunnel vision with no peripheral vision. Then the best headache started that I have ever had. Nothing has come close since. Apologised to the girlfriend and said I couldn’t babysit and was going home to bed. Took 2 Panadol and eventually drifted off. Apparently, I should have gone to hospital and been put under observation. Didn’t know that at the time.

Playing Elsternwick on their ground in heavy conditions. Running with the flight of the ball and keeping my eyes on the ball. Can hear the pounding of feet as players coming towards me. Thinks…this is not gonna end well for Jim. Last 2 steps, jumped up to punch the ball forward rather than take the mark without realising our ruckman had pushed his way to the front of the pack to take the mark. I have nailed him high in the chest with my knees and dropped him like a sack of potatoes. Quickly fled the scene of the crime before he knew it was me. Maybe 60 seconds later I contest the ball with the opposition ruck in the gluepot centre. Ball spills to ground and I lunge forward to knock it forward as he toppled over, knowing full well I will get to my feet quicker than him. Hit him on the jaw with the firm palm of my open hand as I knock the ball on. He makes a funny sound and just lay there. In no time trainers out to him, he struggling to stand and our ruckman still not the best for wear. Both complete accidents and JIm the cause of both.

Was not backward in letting the umpires receive some constructive criticism from me during matches. Particularly holding the ball/man, which is still an issue today. One of my teammates was a little similar. Even more constructive. Cops a high whack/punch to the face one day. Not happy. Bellows at the umpire with blood streaming from his nose (broken)”you saw that, what are you going to do”. Umpire “what, what, I didn’t see anything”….reply “WTF do you think this is? A F——g BAD HEAD COLD?” Pretty hard not to laugh. Same teammate later moved to the Country and took up umpiring and was a very good umpire. No-one got away with too much and those trying to act just got told that he would do a training session with them to learn to stage properly. Great guy.

Good days.
