2024 Draft Thread

Agree with the thinking and suspect the small "slides" in our picks might well be the way we go.

It's a good call out with great examples Posh. This draft will only add to that.

Only thing to add - The move from pick 6 to 2.

It's becoming more obvious we rate Smillie very highly. Us moving from 6 to 2 is the antithesis to North moving back from 2 to get Tauru.

Reckon we likely have Big Willie in our top 2-4 rankings wise. Given he'll get to 6, it gives us no benefit to trade up. Thus we haven't done so.

So any trade with North you pretty much have to exclude that as a benefit to us.

Even FoS greatest fan @spook has written it off as a chance.
We also believe there's a chance FOS gets to 6. Jack was confident Blair knew it.

You're wrong.

We know.

It's Lalor at 1.

At 6 it's FOS if he's there, otherwise Smillie.

At 10 it's Smillie/Allan/Reid and at 11 it's one of them or Whitlock.

At 18 we're hoping for Hotton or Berry. Otherwise the other Whitlock.

At 20 it's Whitlock or Sims or we trade it for an F1.

At 23 it's Sims or Alger.

24 we sell.

Simples.
No Faull?

It seems the noise is based on them being at the same junior club.
I think neither Saints or Dees take him. So we should risk it and let him slide to 10
I have him as a bit of a slider, I think his yo-yo test will spook some clubs, even if I was keen I would roll the dice on a fall to pick 10, I think that's his range to be honest.

Otherwise? Or?

You're right. You know. Otherwise. Or.

Where is the Smillie noise coming from? Bengal doesn't particularly like him, Blair does apparently, but is it confirmed we will take at pick 6 or later?

From good sources like Twomey and other media sources who have all but locked it in.

As we get closer to the draft, they usually get the first 8 to 10 picks spot on.

Unless Twomey suggests otherwise in his phantom tomorrow - lock it in.

Moving away from your "must have" foot skills mantra Bifoclesford. Interesting.

We all have our preferred traits, and to my eyes, kicking is overrated IMO. The modern game is an imprecise, structured, high pressure numbers game that mostly has 30 athletes within 1 kick's radius.

Overrated: Height, kicking technqiue, and possession total.

Underrated: Elite clean hands, quick decisions, handball chains I50.

If there's space (rarely), they usually just need to execute a 30m pass to a leading teammate in the open. Broad can do that after a mark.

Lambo could do it at pace streaming from disordered pressure.

If it's tight (often), they mostly just need to bomb it long to the correct general area. DTLD could do that after a mark. Taranto and Prestia can do it surrounded by ordered pressure. Few kicks require more than that.

Rare, game-changing elite mids can slice a 30m pass under pressure at pace to the advantage of a forward (e.g. Trent to Jack).

But how many players need this level of skill?

Threading the needle with an ambitious bullet pass from a set play situation was the Dusty special, but almost nobody can do this.

'Sublime kicking' doesn't count for much unless we're talking Dusty specials on the regular IMO. But I'm sure Geelong is planning more rule changes to save the game.

Nah mate, Cherry Ripes all the way, followed by Polly Waffles & then (the real) Snowballs. Sugar high for hours :)) :))
You know, Cherry Ripes used to be made with pumpkin and flavouring, as cherries were too expensive (True story). I learned this on a tour at Cadbury.

Those Cherry Ripes are a great analogy for drafting.

Sometimes you buy something with an expectation. But when you unwrap it and go to sink your teeth into it, you find it's full of imitation cheap *smile* and something you weren't expecting. It might give you an occasional sugar hit, but it's not the real McCoy.

Just like Pumpkins DeGooey.
