2024 Draft Thread

Agree but one way or another an Ashcroft bid anywhere, is going to be matched,
with an obvious impact on Marshall.
He is the best performed player and there could be no logical complaint if we bid at one and later bid on Sam Marshall.

What do u think of Marshall?

TBH haven't seen much of him, didn't think it was worth my time as always thought he was going to Brisbane. Doesn't seem to be ranked in with the top tier of players though for some reason, as I've only heard good things about him

Just on the KPP I hope we take whichever kid with the intention of him being either a key forward or key back , someone who will be a lock for us going forward , I dont want us picking a particular player because “ he can pinch hit in the ruck “ or could possibly play back if he dosent make it forward , I’d like to see us take the kid we believe will simply turn into the best player of the lot because they will dominate their position.

We don’t need handy utility’s
Agree, choose a key forward and stick em forward, leaving Balta to play back where he's best. Been swinging around our key position players far to much, even at VFL level.

I posted this history a number of weeks ago. Those late teens / early 20's picks are supplemented with a 1 or 2 pick slide, but picking up a future 2nd. If we did that 3 or 4 times, I'd be very happy indeed, unless there is a complete standout with the pick we already had.

As I've said, I'm very happy to take a pick in the 35-50 range and also the 1st pick in the rookie draft.

Perhaps we trade 1 1st into a F1 next year (maybe 1 of the Bummers picks after Kako has been bid on) and then do the above with Pick 24? Would set us right up for a big trade period again next year, lots of teams at the top looking for a points gain and we could have a whole bunch of 2nd rounders.

We see the cats struggles without an adequate ruck, and how much theyve spent drafting and trading for rucks. And yet they still have Stanley as their #1 ruck.

But at our last picks there will still be good tall deffnders, running backs and small forwards. And hopefully project mids.
Best available will be the order of the day

I’ve always like the idea of having a ruck on the rookie list and not giving away early picks , generally though you only have 1 pick in the top 20 so a good solid 5 year investment always seems a lot to pay for something that may end up not giving back anything .

Yep I’m the same as most in that generally best way to get a good ruck is to trade for a proven one , however we are in a unique situation this year and there is no rush or pressure on a young ruck to develop quickly, I also love the idea of Dodson playing/ training with the core bunch of mids he will grow with towards our next flag .

Bottom line for me is I rate Dobson as a potential 150 game Ruck , his ruck work continues to improve and he naturally stays in the game not like a lot of rucks that disappear once the Ruck contest has ended . Imho he’s at least the equal as a ruckman then any of the highly touted KPP are , hope we land him with one of our later picks , if we don’t we’ll find another good player

Ruckman are like rice with a good hot Indian dish , you don’t really want it but ya gotta have it
Draft a Dodson with one of our 20's picks n then same as all kids hope he continues to develop, just might take a bit longer than mids. If he's a spud, well he only cost an end of 1st round in a year we had heaps. If he's any good, we've got a core ruck for 10 to 15 years. If he's any good and wants to go home in 5 or 6 years. What's the value of a good ruck just entering his prime?

I’d like to get Dobson TM not because his a ruck but more that I rate him highly , being one of our many needs id be happy to have a ruck picked with one of the late ones , in this case it’s Dobson .

I’d imagine it would be at least a first rounder , what did Grundy go for each time ?

Love to get a gin key forward like Lynch tl , however I’m not convinced we are all that great down back with a big blokes , I’m confident Balta will get back to his best if settled down back , Gibcus could be a star if body holds up , however that’s a huge if , I’m not convinced on any of the others will make the grade , it’s certainly not an area we can think we’ve got covered

I am open minded about drafting Dodson. We would probably be using pick 26/27 and if the club rate him as the best talent at that pick then that’s good enough for me. Considering the lack of footy he has played you would hope he would have significant development left in him and if Wells is sniffing around he must see something worth pursuing. On the other hand if we rate another type of player at that pick as the next best, that’s all good as well. We definitely need as much talent as we can get all across the field.

Adelaide has nothing to trade. Zip. And, Carlton would be calling that. And refuse to budge on 3+38 for #2.

All the while FOS at #5 looms as a possibility. And if he gets to 5 he can get to 6.

Lalor
Smith
Draper
Tauru
FOS
Smillie
Langford
Lindsay
Armstrong?
Reid
Allan/Whitlock

Mmm. Maybe he can’t get to #6.

No certainly not, we have holes everywhere due to our success and ignoring the draft previous couple of years. But we have alot more down back to cover atm and we still have good backline experience to nurture. Take away Lynch we have not one key forward you can realistically call a future nbr 1. No-one of experience. We have potential 2nd & 3rd key forwards. Next year also the consensus is there a couple of gun key position options. It's not a 1-year rebuild.

The Cody Walker thing is what makes a joke of the academy system, he was always going to play football, grew up with football, his old man played football, he shouldn't be in our academy as simple as that, there are many other examples of this being the case.
Agree , I understand the theory , however the AFL should be doing this not the clubs , no links , no bidding , no special bull *smile* , AFL have the money to provide all the training and everything associated with getting kids into the game from non traditional back grounds , the less we complicate the game both on and off field the better.

It appears the qld clubs are about to get a massive leg up due to the development of the game up there ,great work no doubt by the QLD clubs , however it shouldn’t mean they continue to get the best junior talent from the entire state

It’s very interesting that Geelong should be interested in Dodson, Dell.

Toby Conway is one of the generally highest rated up and comers. Tipped by Scott in early 2024 to need another year. So it was no surprise that he didn’t cement a spot.

But here we are and Geelong is rumoured to be into Dodson. Wells would be potting his own earlier selection in drafting Dodson. And going out of his way to do so. He doesn’t even have a pick for Dodson.

Interesting if true that Wells wants Dodson. And interesting if true that Wells is putting it about that he wants Dodson.

Properly functioning mid field n forward line will help take a lot of heat off the back line n make it easier for them to function reasonably.

Ahh. Interesting ground the MSHOB ground with that tree down near the goals at one end. Trinity and Thomastown were the teams to beat in my first year in Melbourne. Promotion/relegation changed the teams every year. North Brunswick the best gang of organised thugs I ever played against…….anywhere. We had 3 blokes whacked behind play the first time I played against them. In Amateur footy!
Some of the antics back in those days were mad house, here's a list of my greatest hits.

1. Coming in top place was copping a pile driver from a Samoan player who was getting frustrated by my 40 possession day out. I did get a free kick for that incident but that just encouraged him to kick me in the head during a ground ball contest.

2. I was followed from Punt Road up to Richmond train station by half an opposition team who were frothing at the mouth because I pinned someone in a perfectly executed tackle and bruised him up at little. Had to get the reinforcements to ensure my safe passage back to the Belgrave/Lilydale line.

3. Played in a Grand Final and went head to head with none other than the great Duncan Kellaway of the Glen Waverly Rovers, we lost by a kick, I took the points for 3 quarters and then the floodgates opened in the last. He was probably to the best player I played against whilst playing for MHS. No nasties from Duncan but he was a very physical player and not be be messed with.

4. Having a game cancelled against a technical college due to an excessive number of metallic objects found in the opposstion change rooms. Ninja movies were all the rage back in those days, as were the butterfly knives.

5. Being hip and shouldered in the head 10 metres off the ball in an away game which was the catalyst for my retirement from football. I never found my tooth either and have spent large sums on dental work ever since that incident.

On the topic of the MHS ground, it's tiny like the SCG, you could probably line up a goal from centre half back it's that small, in fact I think David Schwarz did roost one from that far back during a Sun Shield match in the early nineties. I was fortunate enough to see some elite talent pass through the gates at MHS, plenty of big names like Matthew Knights who helped me and a mate get into the Richmond change rooms, Paul Callery also helped in that regard. Stephen Ryan was a pretty good player, as was Stephen Tingay and Andy Lovell. High level footballers but still couldn't get the job done against Assumption College for some reason.

I think it will change personally. There's already been a lot of pressure from experts claiming 12 days is not enough. 4 weeks is the recommended by a leading neurologist dealing with CTE contributed to by impact sports. The 21 days for the rest of the league is a precursor to what will eventual happen. The purpose of break before finals is to allow players to freshen up after a gruelling season (this affects 8 teams) . I can't see them them changing this to before GF and certainly not for the sake of concussions (which was your premise in your original email). Concussion is an injury. It's bruising or swelling of the brain. Hard to take, sure, just like any other injury.
Disagree.I doubt the afl will agree to 21 days(max) until there is a clear distinction between a slight/mild & heavy concussion although a heavy concussion would be pretty obvious.Anyway i don't want to distract from this draft thread about concussions.Interesting times ahead though for sure.

I’ve see Marshall live 3 times. An absolute gun. I’m hoping tigers bid on Ashcroft at 1 and then Marshall early also. Put Brisbane in a position where they go into quite considerable draft deficit. They may pass and I’d be stoked to get him. Elite endurance. When played midfield high possession, good skills and footy IQ. Has not been talked about because likely headed to Brisbane. Been Hidden at HB at Sandy Dragons. Would not surprise me if he turns out the top of this draft. Looks similar in style to Ashcroft, slightly taller and I think quicker. Nice mover.
A gun who isn't in top 10 talk.
Good player maybe but a gun?

Just revisiting Fawcett profile, he was only ever slated as a Late Draft or Rookie pick in his Draft year so we can't expect to say we have found a Smokey as we have virtually seen nothing of him due to injury, maybe me slightly more when he did make the training track, he will however be an interesting watch if he get's an injury free run.
It's about tome we lucked into a tall rather than keeping them on our list for four years before consigning them to the scrap heap.

Do we consider 197cm a Key Forward or a 2nd or 3rd?

height: 197cm

weight: 89kg

D.O.B: 22-04-2005

Tested soundly at the state Draft Combine with his 3.08 seconds for the 20m sprint and 6:38 for the 2km time trial both strong performances for a key forward.

Yep, bid on Ashcroft regardless. The microscope will be on Lalor big time if Smith is tearing it up for the Crows.
Because everyone forgot about Tambling because he wasn't pick one?

As for the comment if we dont get Smith, we've failed our midfield, if we rely on one player - we've lost before we started. Edwards was about 28, Prestia was Pick 9. We'll get another high pick next year, and probably the one after.

Just pick the players and back ourselves, back our development. Who gives a *smile* about Kane Cornes or Ox or Sam NoClue says.

They can write what they want while we hold up cups. We're *smile* Richmond. The clowns outside of Punt Rd can get stuffed.
