2024 Draft Thread

I think there is really good depth, but l am a bit concerned about how the WA boys are developed .
Quite a few with average skill and fitness levels .

We have FJ looking at the bottom age player's ,lm sure he would of had Lalor in his top 5 coming into this year.

Even with poor WA kids and I bet 3-4 jump up and look like top 40 picks I'm ok with having the set of picks we do in this draft.

Good planning.

90 in two weeks from Jagga.

Gotta remember he's doing this in a poor team as well. Reckon once he gets better players around him in the champs his impact will elevate again.
And Saturday was wet and greasy in Melbourne.

He has every type of handball available, in tight, release to space, hold on to last second release and clean under pressure.

I would like to see him kick with some more depth, or see him stream into goal from 50 to see that has that in him. It's a neat kick but it's not going over 40 at the moment.

The depth in his kicking is poor. He gets a lot of cheap possessions from team mates becaue he's their best player and there's nobody else to give it to. Average pace, average sidways movement, not exactly strong. He's ok but probably need to see him in the U/18 Champs.

Barring a nagging worry I have with perhaps being a bit injury prone, I have Fossy Bear way ahead of Jagga Smith. I think I have Guy Smillie and a couple of others ahead of him as well.

If we took him with our first pick, there would be a melt down here in a years time,Zips will be leading the sack the Toce thread:LOL:
As long as he's not at Richmond l don't care how early he goes.

I forgot to mention,,Jonty Faull back, and kicked 5 ,not bad for a guy who kicks like a donkey:p

Bo Allan. Back injury. WA shenanigans again ?

WA v Allies. Very very poor game. Lombo very good. Marshall ok. But little else to write home about.

Unlike others, I have big question marks on the overall quality of this draft. Hoping for much better from VM and VC.

The number I'd be interested to see from Jagga is score involvements. He receives a handball at 1:17 in that clip, he's running towards goal, 25 metres out, does a U-turn, zigs, zags, has a bounce, and handballs to a guy 40 out.

Don't think I've seen him break a line. Don't think he's as damaging as others.
Is he Zac Butters or Darcy Parish?

Allan looked good in the WA v WAFL young guns game. Strong and fast. Bit scrappy, but it was a scrappy game and a warm-up.

If Bakes chooses to go to West Coast I'd like us to be really aggressive and go for the below sort of trades. I've estimated where teams will finish (Freo 4th,Pies 6th, Port 9th, Brisbane 12th and West Coast 16th to forecast picks out).

1st trade with Brisbane - Pick 7 for all our picks after our 1st 2 - Brisbane gain 271 points
2nd trade with West Coast - Picks 3 and 23 for Pick 7 and Baker

We end up with Picks 2, 3, 22 and 23 (if we get a good offer to get the latter 2 up we'd consider it, but otherwise we wait to see who drops)
If we have more spots, we pick out the best from our VFL or rookie players.

We take FOS and Jagga with our 2 picks.
Yep. Love your thinking

I would be looking to trade 22 and 23 to hawks for their future first They have a poor draft hand this year and would be bullish on where they finish next year. I think that could turn into a top 8 pick easily.

Lombard was excellent. 27 and a goal v SA, 32 and 2 goals v WA. I think I have to revise him upwards.

Re Allan, at least we still have our excellent WA man Cousens. Hopefully he slips to one of the teens picks I hope we get (is that too hopeful or two hopeful? See what I did there?)

Is he Zac Butters or Darcy Parish?
Neither. Not as Cotch-like as Butters, more of a dancer than Parish.

One of your best.

It's simply to late damage done, from 2025 onwards they simply will add 1,2 guns instead of 4 ,5 yearly and yes a side must earn its success instead of throwing so many picks at them that blind Freddy couldn't miss.
Pretty sure that so far blind Freddy has missed with both Gee Whizz and Mold Coast. Pure n simple logic that if you are going to try and expand and grow an existing competition or business into " hostile " territory with completely newly manufactured entities, then there needs to be a hand out support package put in place to ensure the new entity has not just a chance of surviving but thriving. Otherwise it dies in a hurry.

No body could argue that gcs etc are paying anywhere near the correct value for top 20 kids.
No club in the land is paying correct value for father sons or academy kids at the moment. All clubs are manipulating the *smile* out of the system to get whatever pick advantage they can. We're about to do the same thing again this year to bolster our draft hand selections. That's why, and I did mention it in my earlier post AFLHQ is looking at ways to change the draft system and junk points trading to make things fairer. They haven't yet figured out what they want to do and can't implement any changes for this year as clubs work on a two n three year lead up strategy so any instant changes would *smile* up a lot of clubs strategies this year, especially ours.

This isn't that, this is keep giving to them until they thrive no matter what,it's called a competition ,not social charity.

Nope not all clubs, tigers got thuk all ,and in fact my man we built a dynasty without our proper picks ,so many premiership players drafted late and or rookies.
Father son isn't 4 academy players in top 20 with 5 maybe in top 20 in a couple of years, never forget it doesn't matter if they gcs are premiers ,they under these rules still can get multiple top 20s,and thuking stold another clubs only academy gun in 10 years.

This is a good example of what separates Vontae O'Cotchin for me. Bear in mind this is R5 last year, so over a year ago when he was yet to turn 17. The pace, the line-breaking, the one-touch, the step, the hops, the smarts and anticipation.

For me he's a clear #1.

At this stage I'd go:
1. O'Sullivan
2. Smillie
3. Lombard. I've revised him upwards, just too explosive, quick and damaging to ignore.
4. Ashcroft
5. Jagga

* Lalor and Allan on the watch for when they get a run at it. I rate both very highly but they've barely played so hard to place them. I could see either or both pushing for top 3.

I suspect the Vic clubs will bid on Ashcroft and Lombard early. Make them pay maximum points

When was the last time you saw a player rack up 40 - 50 possessions at any level? Jagger is elite in centre bounce extraction and to infer he lacks speed or gets fed by others is a little insulting. He plays in an ordinary team but still is BOG. For me he has three outstanding qualities; he wants to win and has the ability to lift whatever side he plays with, secondly he has elite endurance and peripheral awareness with handball par excellence. Agree he is lightweight and limited kicking power (although he passes the ball more than roosting it). His frame is smaller than those you have ahead of him but he is resilient and robust (gets tagged each week and no injury history). Looking forward to seeing him play in a better quality team at a higher level where his will to win will be more obvious.

Disagree on average sideways movement, He's as slippery as an eel.

Reckon he suffers from the volume of uncontested ball he wins by his constant movement, running ability and nouse to get to the right spots. It's a good trait. Much like the closest comparison in style, traits and size Nick Daicos does.

He's had 21 clearances in the past two weeks. That's big. Like Nick, he has a fantastic ability to turn the ball from a contest to outside and make it look easy.

Agree though, he's an interesting watch in the Champs. He's polarising opinion on here. :D
