2023 mid-season rookie draft

Besides, I've come to my own conclusion that the club plans on developing Gibcus into the KPF to replace JR8, when he's ready.

But we aren't allowed to do that. PRE has spoken and will only allow us to play players in the position they were drafted.

I’ve got a sneaking suspicion you’re spot on with this.
Would explain our total neglect towards investing in a developing tall forward like JVR whilst turning our only untried option in Bauer into a defender.
Should that switch work, it could be a masterstroke.
Gibcus dominating forward whilst Biggie and Bauer shore up the key defensive posts.
Add Buller, Hunter or May being developed as the second tall forward role to cover life post Lynch.
We may just pull off a miracle
Explains my thinking exactly. Why else did we ignore JVR and make Bauer go down back at VFL level, even when he was kicking goals in VFL matches? Of course, to train him up for being another tall down there with Tarrant's demise. Along with Tylar Young, whom we upgraded from there last year. Grimesy might be finished after renewed 2 year contract. So we have forward planned our future defensive structure, if Bauer or Biggy or both (even better) can step up. But Balta is the cornerstone it's built around, just as Rance was in our glory years. That's why I think it's unlikely to see Noah being pushed forward or even into the ruck in future, unless in-game injuries or match situation is really desperate. But trade Noah? No way.

Gibcus is a lighter body than NB but will fill out. He is most likely more nimble and agile than Noah, quick recovery and ability to stay offensively dangerous at ground level being essential for a forward. An even better aerialist, especially when he develops his body size and strength, putting on the muscle as he has started to do. Certainly a very good and long kick. Reads the game well and makes good decisions generally. And, as far as I know, no eyesight issues like NB! Hopefully less brain fades too.

Noah Balta a defender?
I like your thinking ;)

Yes but did you miss my reply to you a while back about Noah's defective eyesight. I didn't know anything about that when I was pumping up his forward abilities.
But Dimma still kept trying him in games both late last year and early this year - whether pushing him forward or into the ruck. But lacks the vision along with the smarts to play his best up forward long term IMO now. More suited to running at the ball and rebounding.

Why do I get the feeling that we won't get a KPF?

PRE server will melt from all the activity.
The PRE server melts with any activity.

Pretty bad when you only have 150 people or so online and it totally *smile* itself. Capital investment required….badly.

It's draft day again. The day when an obvious player that fills a need like Jack Buller falls to our pick and we pick some left field option no one has thought of.

You’re underestimating his smarts, he’s top 5 in the comp for intercepts and intercept marks. Takes a bit of intelligence (and bravery) to know when to go for your marks in defence

I suspect our own Luke Teal might be best available, he and a key tall would be on my wish list.
Edit

I just discovered this about Luke Teal from last year, i'm even more keen on him now.

SNAPSHOT: “A medium defender able to play on small and medium forwards while also providing rebound with his skill and composure.”

It has been a tricky year for Luke Teal, missing the first three weeks of the NAB League season missing some of the bigger games but returned against Calder Cannons in Round 4. He successfully had 19 disposals, and although was shaky early, he quickly got going again and by the end of the year was really hitting his straps.

Teal is a good size for a modern footballer, standing at around 190cm and playing mostly as a defender has played on a range of types but mostly small forwards with his biggest task against Harry Sheezel in Round 16. That was a good battle, with Teal finishing that game with 20 disposals and was a real weapon with his sharp kicking.

With his ability to shut down while also provide rebound, Teal could project to be like Collingwood defensive duo Brayden Maynardand Isaac Quaynor who both had a huge years for Collingwood showing those types of players to be very valuable in modern football.

Teal would finish the year only managing four games with Oakleigh Chargers but would average 17.8 disposals and five marks per game and although he has not shown to get the huge numbers like a Lachlan Cowan or Jakob Ryan, he has also had an interrupted year and has had to play more lockdown roles. Teal would also play the final game for Vic Metro against Vic Country which was his first representative game since last year where he also excelled down back."

If you like speed Rye Penny is your man, 2.87 for the 20 mt. and 109cm running vertical leap (record doesn't count as it was at a state combine). Kicking is average from what I have heard.
