2023 Draft Thread.

Every AFL club’s clear list chasm — and the perfect draft targets who could fill them

RICHMOND

Draft picks:
29, 41, 65, 68, 86

List chasm:

The Tigers need some more forward support for Tom Lynch when he returns from injury, with that need only increased by the retirement of Jack Riewoldt. They’ve already addressed that somewhat in trading in Jacob Koschitzke. They’ve also got Dustin Martin and Shai Bolton as mid-forwards who can hit the scoreboard. We haven’t seen much of Josh Gibcus due to injury and some key defensive depth may be needed if he doesn’t come on as hoped. They’re ranked 15th for forward 50 groundball differential and 16th for forward half pressure.

Ideal draft prospects:

They’ll have to get creative given their first pick will come in the second round. Logan Morris can play at both ends, as shown in his stint with Vic Metro, and booted 31 goals from 14 games as a bottom-ager for the Jets. Archer Reidlooks to be a key position prospect for the future but is still growing into his big frame. WA prospects Koen Sanchez and Koltyn Tholstrup — if the latter slides that far — would also be in the mix. The Tigers haven’t been afraid to draft talent from Western Australia in recent years. The wildcard could be Glenelg forward Ashton Moir, who’s immensely talented but looming as one of this year’s big sliders. This time last year, Moir was being talked about as a top-five prospect, but it hasn’t clicked for the exciting and prodigiously talented forward at any level this year.

Anyone know how many list spots we have left? Out-Riewoldt, Cotchin, Tarrant, Soldo, Bradtke. In- Kosi, Naismith. Not sure if Naismith is a rookie or not, so 2-3 primary list spots and 1-2 rookie spots? Wouldn’t mind a few guys training on over summer in hopes of being selected as an SSP rookie, if we’ve got the space

We have 3 list spots. I think 2 main list and 1 rookie. Reckon we only take 2 picks on the night, so suspect we will try and use 65 and 68 even if it only moves us up a spot or 2.

Wonder if GC would entertain us trading pick 29 and those picks in the 60s for one of their picks in the mid 20s? I know those will get eaten up anyway after bids but if we can move up as much as we can it’ll be handy. Really hope we keep a full suite of picks for next year, unless we give them ports 4th rounder or something crap like that

6 out with Biggy to North and Castagna retired (didn't add in Soldo as Naismith overrides that).

Naismith is on main list DFA

We have 3 spots and will use picks 29 and 41, Miller will be elevated from the rookie list to the senior list

"A number of clubs will have a relatively small imprint on this year's draft and look to upgrade rookies to fill senior list vacancies, with Sydney and Richmond likely to take two picks and Collingwood and Port Adelaide to choose between one and two selections."

Oh I forgot about Biggy! Ah yes I did see that about Miller the other day. Castagna we replaced in the mid season draft so his spot isn’t counted

I think thats what we'd be trying.

24 would be ideal (gets us in front of both Carlton and Geelong).

29, 65 and 68 add upto 802 points. 24 is 785, so if they did that it would be a bit of a goodwill trade too.
Maybe we'd look to drop 41 back a little bit but at the moment GC don't have any picks in that area.
Maybe other teams will be looking to trade up, GC at the moment will be taking a deficit into 2024 due to Graham, so I think they will be trying to minimise that as much as possible, probably a deficit of about 300 points right now, so I suspect they would want to reduce that to a max of 50 so that they stand a chance of not dropping at all in next years draft once that comes in as it will likely come off their 2nd round pick.

Personally I reckon this trade works for everyone.

Brisbane - In 41, Out 51 and 54 - They then have 30, 39 and 41
Gold Coast - In 29, 54, 65 and 68, Out 24 - Gain in points of 237 - almost wipes out the deficit as stated above
Richmond - In 24 and 51. Out 29, 41, 65 and 68

Sure we drop by a few spots between 41 and 51, but there are also a number of picks that will be lost in this area due to bidding.

44 - Hawks, 45 - Swans, 47 - Hawks, 48 - Dogs, 49 - Hawks, 50 - Dogs will all be lost in the draft, so we only really fall back 4 spots, and move up 3 in the 2nd. I reckon thats a good deal, gets us in front of Geelong and Carlton.

If we jump Geecheat and Carltoon we have a much greater chance IMO of landing Simpson or Moir if the club is interested.

I suspect this is the sort of thing we'd have our ears out for. If we want to jump up using GC's picks, then we will need to do it before the draft.

Yes I reckon our 2nd picks from 2024 (Fremantle, Richmond) would be asked for, and I really want them kept.

Depends who we are trading for. A few spots to use a 2nd for next year. Nope, don't see the logic and I doubt we would do it with such an open field. Trading with GC for them to gain extra points this year (adding 2024 picks doesn't help them with the deficit they will run up this year).

Its mostly flying blind.

Something I've been meaning to do but haven't had time, is go through all the phantoms/ rankings, AFL, ESPN, HS, Age, RMC, there's 1 or 2 more, and make a list of all players listed in all of them between say 24 and 38, could even go a bit wider, there would be a pool of 25 odd players?

Sandy's coach reckons Luke Lloyd is the most talented member of his premiership team.

"I believe he was the most naturally talented footballer on the Dragons' list this year, which turned out to be a list that won a premiership," Sandringham coach Rob Harding told AFL.com.au.

"His footy IQ is exceptionally high, he understands spacing and positioning, he's got good leading patterns, his hands are fantastic, he's a very strong mark on the lead or in contested situations, and he's a beautiful kick."

Sounds like a recently retired forward.

Any idea on his athletic profile? They site above average endurance but average speed on Rookie Central but would like to see numbers. They also say he doesn’t have acceleration off the mark but relies on football smarts to get to where he needs to be. Wonder if he can jump on people’s heads?
I believe he’s 6’3” and together with qualities mentioned, make him an enticing prospect. Especially if he’s got some growth in him.

That's what I was thinking, Smokey.

They say 193cm, which is 6'4 and the same height as the Riewoldts (when Jack had spikey hair).
