2023 Draft Thread.

RICHMOND

Draft picks:
29, 41, 65, 68, 86

List chasm: The Tigers need some more forward support for Tom Lynch when he returns from injury, with that need only increased by the retirement of Jack Riewoldt. They’ve already addressed that somewhat in trading in Jacob Koschitzke. They’ve also got Dustin Martin and Shai Bolton as mid-forwards who can hit the scoreboard. We haven’t seen much of Josh Gibcus due to injury and some key defensive depth may be needed if he doesn’t come on as hoped. They’re ranked 15th for forward 50 groundball differential and 16th for forward half pressure.

Ideal draft prospects: They’ll have to get creative given their first pick will come in the second round. Logan Morris can play at both ends, as shown in his stint with Vic Metro, and booted 31 goals from 14 games as a bottom-ager for the Jets. Archer Reid looks to be a key position prospect for the future but is still growing into his big frame. WA prospects Koen Sanchez and Koltyn Tholstrup — if the latter slides that far — would also be in the mix. The Tigers haven’t been afraid to draft talent from Western Australia in recent years. The wildcard could be Glenelg forward Ashton Moir, who’s immensely talented but looming as one of this year’s big sliders. This time last year, Moir was being talked about as a top-five prospect, but it hasn’t clicked for the exciting and prodigiously talented forward at any level this year.

Rumours circulating that we are looking to trade up on draft night if we can get either Cooper Simpson or Lance Collard.

Thats my concern. For some reason reminds me of Caddy.
There’s been a few the last few years that are tall, big bodied mids - which is great in some respects - but their lack of leg speed finds them out in the end. Seems for every Cripps there’s 2 or 3 similar body/pace failures or battlers.

Closer to Lambert than Lennon.

On a closer look it was a horrible call to say he was Lennon like. He has pace which Lennon never had.

There are a fair few players in this draft who were highly rated in their bottom age years but didnt produce the same quality this year. Its definitely going to interesting post first round where everyone falls.

I would take the punt on Stevens if he was still on the board with our second pick.

It really depends on his testing. It's okay if he's a little slow if his endurance running is good and he can get from contest to contest.

But really we need pace in the midfield. I'd take Simpson before him and I'm a big George fan.

Cooper Simpson has good pace type of midfielder that we need. Expected to go in the early 30s.
George Stevens, strong and big, but lacks a bit of toe and we already have three hardnosed mids in Taranto, hopper, and Prestia. We need more outside run and speed to complement Bolton.

Why cant we have both?

If the KPP players are off the board then lets load on mids and sort this out in the draft.

Attack free agency and a Cadman next year to get our KPP stocks up.

Totally agree re mids, but will we be able to get both is the question.

The other player I like is Charlie Edwards.

I am always a bit wary of the 'draft bolter' but his upside is huge.

Stevens is the one most likely to slide but that all depends on how he tested.

Can Blaire work any magic on draft night to get further up the board?

Going forward we have elite stocks Shai Bolton, Daniel Rioli and Tim Taranto. And two of them are getting on. Needs? We have nothing and need everything.

In 2016 it was becoming clear that Anthony Miles was a problem in the RFC midfield. Predictable slow running. My own conclusion at that time was that all static inside mids are a liability. Better another outside mid than a tank.

Not so long ago there was an inside tank who was effective in the role - Ben Cunnington. I think he was largely a liability but others may have liked him. Ollie Wines is past his use by. Which inside tanks are useful? None of them. They are way out of fashion and not likely to return soon.

Tanks at HBF? Shannon Hurn was never brisk. And couldn't jump. Fat blokes own the air by owning so much of the ground under it. Tanks at HB can work. Much of Nick Vlastuin's work is about ownership of ground. He stands in front and owns the air above him. Vlastuin isn't even a big fellow but he is smart and strong.

George Stevens is coming off a big knee. (Two years plus for an ACL. Axiom.) So he has improvement in him. There is little or no place in the AFL for tanks in the midfield. But they can play at HBF. Stevens is interesting. His 20m time is a big deal for him.

True. Ideally, I'd like one of both "key forward and a quick mid". The 2024 draft is a midfielders draft.

If George Stevens slides to our 2nd rounder (perhaps doubtful), but if he does then Matthew Clarke would surely pull the trigger. If we nailed Simpson and Stevens wow!

The draft over 2 nights is so infuriating, it was much more enjoyable over the 1 night.
