2021 Draft Thread

I sure miss the old days when we were in the Live PRE chatroom & as picks would be called out, there would be a rolling commentary about who was going to be a dud & who was a gun.
Yeah.
Because of Bullus and Co, I became invested in the draft, before and on draft day ........

""He is still there, two more picks, the idiots didnt take him before us .......then OMG....we didnt take him ....who the XXXX is JOL?

Are you trying to get in early with your outrage Sin?
I am outraged. I much preferred the times when the club leaked like a sieve and I knew who we were going to draft weeks before it happened. Saves all that effort of actually paying attention to all the potential draftees.

Stop the no leaking farce !!!!

But it still happens today.
Clubs giving up pick 9 for the headless chook Saad.
Thats worse.
What did freo give up to get a kid that couldn't get a game in a team screaming for a running half back.
There are clubs that Keep picks and others like Carlton and Port that are more confident in there trading then there drafting.
Besides Prestia we have not given away a first rounder on a player since McMahon.
There was a story about McMahon. Our second pick was promised by Miller and Terry then unknowingly, promised it for another, and then ok’d the use of our first because of his earlier commitment?
Massive loss.

Been saying for a while that we will be taking a tall early.

Reckon it will be Gibcus. No chance we don't pick him if he is available.

Pick 17 may be JVR as well, if not I expect us to take at least 1 tall Razzo/Williams in the 20s

I think it was the Conca year when we posted a "congrats on becoming a Tiger" story on the website the day before the draft. The good ole days

Gibcus 100% if available at 7.

JVR big red flags as he lacks athleticism, is slow and will struggle at AFL level - do not want.

U sure he is not the next Jayden Post? Also had a big leap, was athletic and a good mark.

Gibcus not the best by foot either.

Id rather take Erasmus, Sinn or Hobbs early and then JVR at 17. He is aggressive which is half the battle with key defenders and the reason Post, Elton and Griffo didn’t make it.

I tend not to get drawn into draft comparisons from 10-15 years ago - cherry picking and just a lazy exercise IMO.

Why didn't you use Aaron Naughton as your comparison? See, I can cherry pick too.

I was discussing Gibcus - not Jayden Post FFS.

I re-read that thread just the other day.

RFC official was in damage control, there was talk of hackers, but in the end it was just sloppiness.

Dylan Grimes is 1.93m and Broad 192cms, Grimesy is a key defender, as is Biggy. Get it right The Age!

How your club stands ahead of the 2021 draft

RICHMOND

PICKS: 7, 15, 26, 27, 28, 83

KEY DEFENDERS: Noah Balta, Nathan Broad, Robbie Tarrant, Ben Miller.

SMALL/MEDIUM DEFENDERS: Nick Vlastuin, Dylan Grimes, Jayden Short, Liam Baker, Sydney Stack.

MIDFIELDERS: Dustin Martin, Dion Prestia, Shane Edwards, Shai Bolton, Trent Cotchin, Kane Lambert, Kamdyn McIntosh, Jack Graham, Marlion Pickett, Jack Ross, Thomson Dow, Riley Collier-Dawkins, Will Martyn, Hugo Ralphsmith, Matthew Parker.

KEY FORWARDS: Tom Lynch, Jack Riewoldt, Bigoa Nyuon.

SMALL/MEDIUM FORWARDS: Jason Castagna, Daniel Rioli, Jake Aarts, Maurice Rioli, Josh Caddy.

RUCKS: Toby Nankervis, Ivan Soldo, Samson Ryan.

With five selections inside the top 30, Richmond have an excellent chance to replenish their list soon after a golden era that yielded three premierships.

The prized pick seven could be used on a strong midfielder such as Josh Ward, Ben Hobbs or Neil Erasmus or an intercept marking defender such as Josh Gibcus. The Tigers would also be remiss to not consider Jye Amiss as champion forward Jack Riewoldt nears the end of his career, particularly after losing Mabior Chol and Callum Coleman-Jones in the trade period, however they will pick the best player available rather than draft for need at such a high pick. They also like Josh Rachele, but sources suspect Adelaide will take him off the table before the Tigers step up to the plate.

The second pick may slide or go up the draft depending on pick swaps and who is available, but there will be plenty of good players available at their second pick such as Darcy Wilmot, Campbell Chesser or Tyler Sonsie, with the club also well-placed to enter any discussions about pick swaps with 26, 27 and 28 in their hand.

Noah Cumberland will be re-rookied*.

You are basing your opinion on JVR on observation or hearsay?
Just basing it on the footage I've seen of him online - not going to pretend I travelled around Australia during COVID to watch these kids :)

Ultimately, all these highlight clips show us the "best" of these players in a couple minutes - and JVR just looks too cumbersome for AFL football to be an elite player. Can he be serviceable? Sure, but that's not worth a 1st round pick IMO.

I just can't see him getting separation as a forward and with team/zonal defence in the AFL, I think he'll struggle to impact. As a defender? We'll, I think Gibcus has a lot more upside.

Yep, the official line was the pick we planned to use on Jordy was actually used on Morton so we had no choice but to use our first rounder. I think this is another illustration of Wallace's unflinching dedication to outside runners, a sensible person would have simply walked away and said next year.

His speed is better than average, closing speed as a defender in the safe zone, explosion on the lead not elite but not too bad. I think he makes it as a Heath Grundy swingman, his contested marking is the best in the pool from my perspective and he loves the rough stuff which will suit Richmond down to a tee. Kicking not spectacular and can look a bit mechanical at times but not the worst in the draft by any stretch. Form against bigger bodies also solid. Good pick at 17 if Sonsie or Goater are off the board.

Evidently Biggie Nyuon is a key forward now

Twomeys's just stated that the Giants are willing to trade out 13 for either a future 1st or a 2nd and a future 2nd. Do we do it?
