2021 Draft Thread

Ben Hobbs

GWV Rebels, NAB League / Horsham Demons FC / Ballarat Clarendon College
State: Victoria (Country)
Height: 183cm
Weight: 79kg
Date of Birth: 16/09/03

Medium midfielder who is a hard-edged beauty who excels one-on-one and consistently extracts the ball out of congestion. Has elite game sense, reading the cues in winning the loose ball and has been ultra-consistent from the Under-16s championships in 2019 when he won All-Australian selection and Victoria Country's MVP. Has similar traits to Port Adelaide star Travis Boak with his competitive edge and ability to hit the scoreboard, averaging 25 disposals (11 contested), 5.2 clearances and five tackles in six matches for the Rebels and winning Team of the Year honours. Co-captain of Victoria Country at Under-19s level, he showed his trademark ball-winning ability and zest having 29 disposals to be among his team's best players.
Showcased his athleticism with an 80cm running vertical jump and 6 minutes 32 seconds for 2km at the NAB AFL Draft Combine in Bendigo for Victoria Country.

I have seen the Boak comparison a few times im not sure he has that level of development in him, Boak ran 2.95 20mtr at his combine and Hobbs wouldnt have that pace or outside game and if the reports of his 20mtr time are correct 3.16 that is slower than Caddy at the same age. I like his game but agility and speed i have question marks

The London seems an odd choice for the venue.

Hahaha, the AFL clearly trying to conserve some cash.

Normal draft - hire out a hall at Crown
Covid draft - Hole the draft teams up at Marvel, and the draftees.................lets just tell them to meet us at the London, make sure someone gets there early to get a good table

Does anyone know the last time his height and weight were adjusted?

Just wondering if these are current heights or start of the year. If start of the year, its feasible that he could have grown to 185/186 and thats a bit of a game changer, moving towards that tall midfielder height accompanied with the endurance and contested work.

His agility is fine, his breakaway speed from a contest is fine, his straight-line speed ok isn't super fast, but I have never thought he is slow.

I'm pretty sure that time of 3.16 was a 2020 time, Redford can confirm that but no doubt he would've improved on that time.

Thoughts?

Interesting, they refer to the very same game v Dandenong that I mentioned this morning where assessing the pros and cons of Sinn are concerned.

Spot on that you did. Most of us had him just outside the top 10 (11-15), do you think he will now be taken inside the top 10. Who's likely to pull the trigger.

I would take Sinn over Hobbs any day of the week…. And I’m hearing we’ll take him at our first pick if Rachelle is gone

Dunno AT. Don’t think anyone does. This whole Sinn thing grew legs largely off BF. Hardly reputable. Me, he looks about that 15-20 range but again, who the hell knows. If he went earlier ie 9 to 15 then Brisbane maybe a possibility ? Saints if they do some wheeling and dealing ? But otherwise, don’t really see anyone else in the frame and hence why it’d be a tad strange I’d have thought to be using a pick 7 (9) on him.

Ceiling is certainly higher, but with where our list is at, I'd think we would go with the safer pick of a player that will play 150+ games, and I think that will be Hobbs at our pick.

Thoughts on these 2 kids liking the look of them. Long a 195 cm tall midfielder.

Weight: 76kg
Date of Birth: 03/01/03

Ned Long

Northern Knights, NAB League / Fitzroy JFC / Melbourne Grammar
State: Victoria (Metro)
Height: 195cm
Weight: 92kg
Date of Birth: 05/02/03

Agree this came up out of the blue, nonetheless, I wouldn't be using pick 7 (9), on him. If he was there at our 2nd (first round) pick sure, he seems to be always injured.

Thanks Bully, if you can, I would be interested in seeing your updated top 60
Final Top 50 (rankings)

1. Horne-Francis
2. Nick Daicos
3. Sam Darcy
4. Finn Callaghan
5. Matthew Johnson
6. Josh Rachele
7. Josh Ward
8. Josh Gibcus
9. Ben Hobbs
10. Josh Goater

Resembling the Joshua Tree this group is a blend of upside and relatively solid floors, don't think there will be any outright busts amongst this group. Many will be surprised by how high Johnson is but that's just emblematic of how high is upside is in comparison to the others.

11. Tyler Sonsie
12. Mac Andrew
13. Neil Erasmus
14. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera
15. Josh Sinn
16. Jye Amiss
17. Zac Taylor
18. Sam Butler
19. Blake Howes
20. Campbell Chesser

This group has A grade upside but might come with a lingering doubt or two. Many will be surprised by Erasmus being pegged so low but I wouldn't be risking him in the top ten given he's not quite an accomplished mid. There is enormous potential but with his kicking more B class I think there's some chance he lands in no mans world as a flanker without the kicking smarts of the best rebounders in the competition. I have Howes ranked higher than most but I've factored in plenty of upside and feel he could become an extremely damaging wingman/half forward. Very impressed with his overhead marking and work below the knees.

21. Jacob van Rooyen
22. Josh Fahey
23. Arlo Draper
24. Michito Owens
25. Connor McDonald
26. Darcy Wilmot
27. Tom Brown
28. Toby Conway
29. Mitch Knevitt
30. Cooper Murley

This group has some potential to become A grade but would require everything to go right, quite a few have inconsistent disposal which needs to be cleaned up at the highest level. Knevitt would be higher if not for his patchy disposal. Wilmot & Fahey project as flankers but very good ones so they deserve their top billing.

31. Ronald Fejo Jnr.
32. Judson Clarke
33. Rhett Bazzo
34. Brady Hough
35. Matt Roberts
36. Corey Warner
37. Joshua Browne
38. Jesse Motlop
39. Jack Williams
40. Sam Banks

Such a mix here, most need plenty of development time with the exception of Roberts who can be a little one paced. I read an article about Roberts having a similar impact to Dunstan. I think that says it all really, there's a number of guys like Dunstan & Brodie who could fill this void. Yet to be convinced that Roberts can eclipse the output of Constable & Hately, that is effectively why he ranks so low.

41. Angus Sheldrick
42. Charlie Dean
43. Leek Alleer
44. Bodhi Uwland
45. Alastair Lord
46. Kade Dittmar
47. Marcus Windhager
48. Hugh Jackson
49. Paul Curtis
50. Harvey Harrison

A bit of an odd ball collection, some with big upside like Alleer, some with a limited ceiling like Dean. Harrison is the athlete who may prove to be successful based on his athletic profile alone. Dittmar a solid pick if you're looking for a midfield addition.

51. Taj Woewodin
52. Ned Long
53. Angus Anderson
54. Charlie Molan
55. Kai Lohmann
56. Jake Soligo
57. Lachlan Rankin
58. Tom Lewis
59. Bailey Rogers
60. Noah Pegoraro

This is the state league region, I could also add Greg Clark & Blake Schlensog to the mix, Eric Benning also a bit stiff & I like Oscar Morrison as a young general defender. Anthony Caminiti is another who would be a decent KF prospect later in the draft.

Not seeing many concerns those things can be ironed out kid backs himself good sign doesn't go in his shell.

On another matter, I asked C.Twomey the other week if he’d heard anything about us and being interested in Matt Johnson. He said strangely enough, no. Very quiet on that front. You could look at that two ways - a) no interest or b) large interest and just trying to stay low key with it. We do that often.

That's been said by Cal by memory but I'm not so sure we will pull the trigger on him at pick 7 (9). I still think he goes outside the top 10, now if we were able to snare Hobbs at 9 and Sinn at 17 wow! But perhaps unlikely to make it our 2nd first-rounder.

Draft Range

9-16

Potential Landing Spots

St Kilda (Pick 9), Brisbane (Pick 14), Richmond (Pick 15)

Have to disagree. Missing the goals entirely on the run, kicking out on the full and missing targets, all raise at least a query with me. Not a top 10 for mine personally. Bit further down the order.

Either we get Charlie Dean or Noah Pegoraro fills a hole.
