2014 Draft/2014 Nat Champs

What are people's thoughts on Caleb Daniel? I'm smitten with him. He's top 10 if not top 5 on talent. Literally has no weakness to his game other than his height (167cm). He's fast, has elite endurance, elite skills. Very smart player too. I know he's tiny but I'd love to take him in the second or third round. If he were 10cm taller he'd be in contention for the number 1 pick IMO.

He'll get picked up no doubt.Just a matter of what number!

A good mate of mine (Dees supporter), has been beating the Daniel drum for a few weeks now. If he's there for our second pick I'd take him in a flash.

We desperately have a need for his type, speed and silky skils.

Daniel looks great. He wouldn't be drafted to take towering pack marks at CHF. He's quick skilled can get it and knows what to do with it. I'd take at our second pick no worries.

He'll end up a rookie pick with that height unfortunately.

It's BS sometimes how much height can hold you back, but recruiters won't pick him in the first 3 rounds at a minimum, IMO.

Too small?
Yep. Titch Edwards would tower over him.

Agree.

went up the coast for the U16 champs today. watched a div 3 game, boomerangs V the world. Booms coaches by aaron davey, the world by anthony koutifedes. Standard was a little disappointing. The world looked like all majak dawes brothers, but they couldnt catch the *smile* ball. The boomerangs skills were a bit down too IMO. I suppose thats why they are Div 3. Some real leg speed on show and the best collection of afros ive ever seen assembled, so that was worth the price of entry.

One kid for the little black book. Indigenous lad from Lakes Entrance by the name of Hayes i think (ill check). Super fast, super hard running both ways (cotchin like multi possession chains), wins his own ball, great decision making (although the pressure was never immense) and uses the ball with both feet very well. Ill check his name on the record and get back to you.

Then I took in Div 2 nsw V qld. Better standard but no real eye catchers.

Hope to take in Div 1 vic met V vic country on friday.

A rookie at best and every chance to miss out completely. Players under 175cm rarely get drafted and ones below 170cm are as rare as hens teeth

Normally I'd agree with you both but I honestly think Caleb is something special. I'm serious when I say he has no weakness in his game. I think he's more talented than Lewis Taylor who was pick 28 last year, albeit 5cm taller. But once a player is below about 175cm I don't think it really matters how short he is. Maybe I'm crazy but I'd be happy to take him in the second round.

Players around that height are frequently compared to Boomer Harvey but IMO he's one of the few who could actually live up to that comparison. He'd not only be a success, but a real cult figure IMO.

I'll be gobsmacked if someone doesn't pick him up.

Agree with Stylo. This kid has something special about him.

agree, only saw his game against V Country, but so elusive and classy, didn't waste a kick, great finisher, tough, very impressed

Havnt laid eyes on the kid. but being 167cm, playing against other kids is one thing. being 167cm playing against men is another thing entirely IMO. David Rodan demonstrated this point fairly clearly.

my 14 year old daughter is taller than that.

Havent seen the kid, but ILHO the three things that hold vertically challenged kids from making it are -

- Strength over the footy.
- Kicking depth - and leysy's talking 55m+ comfortably.
- Elite pace and agility.

That isn't easy to possess all those things, but if they do there is no reason at all mark them down.

So on this kid, like say Dion Prestia - does he have them?

Agree. especially the kicking penetration. Miles is a case in point. He has clinton king-like penetration by foot. Im presuming that why gws cut him loose? I'd add

-leap

Like Michael Mitchell. You can grow 3 feet real quick if you got a leap.

Prestia is 175. 175 is 3 inches taller than 167. Thats the difference between Brett Deledio and Richo.

If 195 puts you in the KPP column of the draft combine formguide, then 167 put you one out in the dwarf column.

Im sure the young bloke's got the heart of a lion and come from a great family. But theres the laws of physics and that.

Fair enough Golly, its all each to own. Sure its a nice to have, but if they are going to play midfield (which they must) leysy actually isn't bothered by leap.

At that height (whether 167 or 177) you are not getting them into your system for overhead marking ability.

I reckon as recruiting boss, youde have to have a few non-negotiable rules (obviously, through the 90's and early 00's, our only non-negotiable rule for recruiting was the recruiters have steamed, rather than fried dim sims when on the road).

If I was boss. sub 175 would be almost non-negotiable for me. the case where i would consider overriding the rule, was if the kid was 174, and black.

I only saw the one game like I said, but apparently he dominated the next one as well. Dominated in the game I saw, every touch a winner. I loved him. Plays in a helmet. Liked his post game interview too, asked him what his nickname was, said ; 'dunno, helmet head I spose'

if you'd seen the game I saw you wouldn't be so adamant. same hgt as Brent Harvey, similar vibe too.
