3 Cotch

2 Morris
1 Ellis

Good game by Nahas too.

Perhaps hard on Lids, but some of his work was half-arsed. The difference in intensity between him and #9 was never more obvious than it was yesterday.

You see those 3 in the votes, you would think we win against the Suns. :(

As others have said, we lost players ranked roughly between 7 and 17 in the past couple of weeks. AND, the likes of Tuck and Grigg had their worst games in two months when we needed their leadership

MATCH REPORT
by SkillzThatKillz

Coming into the Round 16 clash against the Gold Coast Suns in Cairns, the Richmond Tigers had a 7-7 win/loss record, sitting just outside the top 8, with a genuine hope of playing finals footy in season 2012. Gold Coast on the other hand, sat on the bottom of the ladder and had not won a game for approximately 12 months. This was to be one of the biggest games for the Richmond Football Club in recent history. Considering Gold Coast beat Richmond in the fixture last year and also considering where Richmond were at before this game, it had to be a must win game to help keep the 2012 finals dream alive. The pressure was on.

Unfortunately for Richmond Dustin Martin, Daniel Jackson and Matthew White were all suspended for the match and star midfielder Nathan Foley and emerging star Dylan Grimes were injured with both set to miss the remainder of the season.
Further bad news for Richmond was that ruckman Ivan Maric and defender Ben Griffiths were late withdrawals, being replaced by Angus Graham and Jeromey Webberley. David Swallow was a big IN for The Gold Coast.

Trent Cotchin kickstarted the game with several disposals within the first minute along with the first centre clearance. Of interest was that Jack Riewoldt started the game and some subsequent centre ball-ups playing on the wing. This tactic was to draw experienced defender Matthew Warnock out of the defensive 50 so the Gold Coast defence were undersized and somewhat inexperienced. The issue with this was that the Tiger forwards were unable to capitalise on this and found it very difficult to mark the ball inside the forward 50. This was also due to extra Gold Coast players in defence at different times.

The first 6 minutes of the game pretty much summed up the first half of footy. No score was kicked at all within this time and the ball pretty much went from end to end like a game of ping pong. Gold Coast showed some encouraging signs with their disposal and decision making. Richmond goaled first after Riewoldt marked well inside the forward 50. Gold Coast led at halftime with the score 27-51. Cotchin and Deledio were brilliant in the first half and it was fantastic to see Kelvin Moore out on the ground and getting some of the footy. Webberley was subbed off early and was replaced by Brett O’Hanlon. Campbell Brown provided a bit of a headache for the Richmond defence and Gary Ablett had a reasonable first half of footy for the Suns.

With a fairly poor first half of footy, the thought of finals kind of went off the radar for me. All I wanted was for the Tigers to win the game and it didn’t matter by how much we won by.

The start of the 3rd quarter was all Richmond, with the Tigers kicking the first 5 goals of the quarter to then lead the game 59-51. 3 goals to Nahas and 1 each to Riewoldt and Mcguane sent Richmond fans into a frenzy. It is amazing what can happen when your team plays their natural game with plenty of run, something that was lacking in the first half of footy. Nahas was simply amazing in the 3rd quarter with his 3 goals. Gold Coast however were able to kick some goals back through Hunt and Hall. The 3rd quarter ended with Richmond leading 67-63.

Unfortunately the entire game could be summed up by the last 2 minutes which was Richmond nightmare material squared by infinity. Gold Coast were able to goal through an amazing running goal by Jarrod Harbrow with less than 2 minutes to go and of course the goal by Karmichael Hunt after the siren to win the game.

Final score 88-90.

Silence, disbelief, shock and I could go on, but nonetheless IMO the worst moment in recent history of the RFC. Losing to the bottom team who had a terrible % and had not won a game all year and may well have squandered our 2012 finals chances. Terrible result for the RFC in the context of the season. Anyhow, I’m an optimist which I believe is known as a “brightsider” on this forum. I believe in the direction we are heading and did find some positives from the game. They are :

- The form of Trent Cotchin. He was clearly the best on ground and went head to head on Gary Ablett and beat him. Not very often a non-tagger goes head to head and beats Ablett like Cotchin did.
- Kelvin Moore was more than serviceable in defence and looks to remain in the team especially since Batchelor will miss a few weeks through injury.
- Brett O’Hanlon, this kid looks the goods.
- Brandon Ellis our first round draft pick last year had one of his best games in his short AFL career. Should be up there in the Rising Star award (when he gets a nomination that is).
- Ivan Maric, Jackson and Martin should all be right to play against the Roo’s in R17.

The loss against the Suns makes the Round 17 clash against the Kangaroos even bigger, with the Roos also in the frame for a shot at playing finals footy.

EDITORIAL

Thanks to Skillz for undertaking the uneviable task of reporting of one of our most shocking losses of recent years. I am not going to say anymore about it. Suffice to say that I was numb on Sunday, wishing it was a dream.

As was pointed out in the report, one of the highlights was the form of Trent Cotchin who racked up a BOG performance and consolidated his grip on this year's award. Brett Deledio was also good and attracted plenty of votes and Brandon Ellis continued his solid debut season and was recognised by the voters this week.

The game this Sunday is now make or break for the Tigers. One more slip and the season is over as far as finals are concerned. The return of Dusty and Jacko should help bolster the side and expect nothing short of a Herculean effort from the boys to make up for that last minute.
