"2009 Official PRE Draft thread'

I am going to go with Simon Buckley-Melbourne.

I think this kid is going to be a A class midfielder of the future.

Played 14 games in 08 for a average of 21 disposals a game and 6 marks per game! ;)

He's also a nice modern day, tall midfielder at 190cm.

A bright future ahead of him at 21yrs old.

I wonder how good he is though, playing in such a poor side. >:D

Depends what position they play, but I'm a general believer that mediocre players on good sides are overrated in the football world while solid role players on bad sides are underrated.

The line between winning as loseing teams in the AFL is not as broad as we like to imagine. Of course that makes Richmond's efforts to be so consistently be on the wrong side of that line so amazing.

U2 picks Aaron Edwards of North.
Yeah, I flipped over Edwards, Steamer and one other name in the pool.

Steamer has more upside although with Thompson gone Edwards could get 40-50 this year.

Agree, Phantom was the one saying it, I was ribbing him, this is my response to him then...

Never understood that theory myself, if you compared him to teammates sure, but his stats stack up against his contemporaries.

Personally, I always thought it was HARDER to play well in a poor side. Especially get as much of the ball he has when they have copped such a shellacking, not too mention continue with one of his elite strengths, kicking long to advantage. (His hardly been running around in circles clocking possessions like Bowden has done).

Nope, can't buy into that one, on any player in any debate. I'm not just defending my player.

He's a interesting one Rusling, not sure what to make of him. He has a great sprint/lead and mark, which suggests yes he could be a good forward. But in footy today you need to be good below your knees/at ground level if not that tall (he is only 190cm) and he is shocking in that area. Doesn't really win/hunt the footy other than on leads or exert defensive pressure in his zone.

Not convinced he isn't a one trick pony, if so, he will get found out.

EDIT: Just looking him up some more, there are some signs his defensive pressure was improving, but you have to worry about his lack of games played. He has played 6, 5, 6 and 1 in 2008. Hasn't he done the shoulder twice?

Yep, two shoulder reco's I think - should be good mates with our Schulz - very similar (but don;t tell ToOheys :shhh )
