17 Round Season!

So, Gill says:

* Games will be shortened to 16 minutes plus time on giving the AFL room to push more games into a smaller
window at the start of the season.
- not sure what this really means if he declared just 17 this season.

* "We don’t know how many games we will get into this 153-game journey before we have to pause,"
- uh, 153 games?

* McLachlan said the League was still looking at pushing in more games into the opening block of the season, but
that the first four rounds of match-ups remain locked in.

"It's going to be day-by-day, but if we can accelerate it we will," he said.
- so, Rounds 1 - 4 are locked but what about the rest? Do we get a new fixture?

* Every year I created my own AFL fixture on an A3 size sheet and hang it on the wall. Now it's going to the bin.

Less than 24 hours before the round one opener between Richmond and Carlton, the League announced on Wednesday night it would be progressing with the scheduled fixture after mammoth meetings involving the AFL Commission.

But with supporters already unable to attend games indefinitely, the AFL has forecast that could extend throughout the newly shaped 17-round season.

CEO Gillon McLachlan forecast the chance of fans being unable to see their teams live as Government regulations clamp down on mass gatherings.

"It depends how this plays out, but it feels that's a possibility, isn't it?" he said.

- surely we can't be this ridiculous?

Looks like suburban leagues postponed until May 2 and regionals until May 31.

Might have to look for something else to follow or just live like a recluse.

The first 4 rounds locked in. Unless they are going to shorten the time between games why the shorter quarters?

The agenda is obvious, they want a shorter game.

Time to inundate them with feedback that the game time should not be tampered with. I know we went to shorter quarters some years back but my understanding was that they called time on more strictly and we have ended up with similar length quarters, around half an hour.

Don't mess with the game, especially don't let the idiots at AFL House mess with the game, they're idiots. Why are they so obsesssed with changing things, Australian Football must be one of the most successful sports, on a per capita basis, in the world. Mess with the magic formula at your peril.

so here's why I love the possibility of 17 games of 16 minute quarters in a short space of time.

1. During this Richmond Era, much as during the Lions Era and Hawks Era, the H&A is largely just killing time. settting yourself for September, when you go into another gear. Your campaign kind of starts.

2. So, it is possible by the end of July, the H&A stuff is done - and as long as September is on, be it in August, July or December, and provided they go back to normal footy played in front of normal crowds, I wouldnt really care if we had to play 3 rounds of Galaga, or 10 pin bowling to get there

3. This format buys time and keeps the hope of a normal September, the proper stuff, alive. It maybe thought of as a lightening premiership.

and time waits for no imam and hope springs infernal.

absolutely.

i think ppeople need to understand this is about getting through a season, if they don’t clubs will fold, already people will lose their jobs with hundreds of millions of less revenue. So shortened quarters etc don’t faze me, is it ideal no but really who cares it’s not life threatening is it.

with regards to where he said first 4 rounds are locked in I’m assuming it’s opponents then they might need to cut and change depending on which teams are healthy and which ones are in quarantine.

i have no idea if it’s possible to get through all the games planned, I wouldn’t be surprised if season is even shorter and they increase finals participants and quarantine everyone for a month or two before and during, who knows but I’m glad there playing and have a crack!

Why do they have to shorten the quarters?
Does the virus get tired after 16 minutes (+ time on)
Stuff me I'm sick to death of this bunch of incompetent w@**€rs ruining OUR game. P155 off stuff wits.

Short quarters a to do with managing players in case there may be 2 games in the space of 4 or 5 days.

absolutely.

Agree this is about getting through the current period. But, are you asking us to trust the idiots who run the AFL not to use this as an opportunity to shorten the game permanently? I wouldn't trust them to make me a cup of tea, let alone not wreck our great game.

If they can't get through enough H&A games, then, depending on the particular circumstances, they could go for a conference system with a final 4 in each conference and the winners play off. Again, my worry is that they would try and run it like the NFL in the USA with conferences permanently - no thanks.
