If the papers have any more guff, and the Age has put Rule on the case so they probably have heaps, they probably won't publish it yet.

There is a casualty. Cousins. Probably came earlier than they thought. And it would seem inhumane to go in too hard ATM. Might alienate their readership. Maybe they have some ethical qualms that apply tom his current state. Maybe they don't want their next story to get lost in this one.

But it won't be long before we start to read the new evidence if they have any.

Rule's just not in it for one preliminary story.

Agree dyere'ere. It'll come out eventually.Rule is a good and respected journalist.

What did people who saw Woosha last night think BTW?

He was fairly forthright and explained alot of the dilemas he faced but i find it dissapointing that he knew of this way back last July but did little because there was no 'hard evidence' but rather circumstantial and innuendo.

The mans a qualified chemist for god sake.He would've noticed the signs. He spent some time of nearly every day with the guy.

I find it a bit dissapointing he didn't act more decisevely back then when he could've nipped it in the bud.For Benny and the teams own good.Woosha and the west coast brains trust have obviously been involved in sweeping it under the carpet for too long.

Benny will end up being thankful to Rule i reckon with the benefit of hindsight,he bought this issue to a head and forced the clubs hand.If this had've gone on for the next number of months without club action it could've ended in alot more tears.

Not sure that Woosha could have simply 'nipped it in the bud'. It is obviously not that simple. Cousins wouldn't stop simply because Woosha asked him to. IN fact Cousins has a history of telling people to eff off when questioned. Madcow is likely to be right, with the sniff of a flag they were more willing to believe his lies.

From Woosha's interview, in fairness to him he seemed to be implying that neither he, nor the club were actually equipped or able to handle the player/drugs situation.

Those claiming that Cousins was playing in an enhanced state due to whatever he was taking are IMO wrong. Unless his entire career has been enhanced from day 1 as he has been a fine player for a long time.

Do you think that was a veiled accusation that the AFL's drug policy doesnt allow them currently to handle such situations very well JockBurn03 ?

Re: Ben Cousins in trouble again

If anyone doubts his ability check out a replay of the Geel v WC game at Skilled last year. Geel were miles in front and Cousins kept running and running and the Coasters wore them down and won in the end.

Cousins' game that day was freakish. Absolutely top drawer!

Without doubt Redders. Almost implied that if they were informed after the first strike, they could begin a rehabilitation process. Though others here have expressed that the parents shouldn't be told - I disagree. Family support is critical to rehabilitation. IMO any player who gets one strike wouldn't be that fussed - it would only be after two that they may consider curbing their ways. After all, there is a fair chance that in one calendar year they won't get tested - as evidenced by many of the captains comments yesterday.

ABC radio reports the "2 strike" players will be named over the weekend.
Is that being reported as a change in AFL policy Andy - or is someone simply spilling the beans?

Uh oh......stand by. If that happens, there's gonna be a lot of traffic on PRE over the weekend !

How is this possible? Wasn't there some court ruling saying they couldn't?

My exact thoughts

Re: Ben Cousins in trouble again

My impression was that it came from the AFL, (but I could be wrong as I was in another room.)

yeah, well he's going to say that isn't he.It's everyone elses fault but his. When in doubt blame the AFL.

If you ask Benny to stop and he doesn't,well then you have to take more drastic measures, surely.

Would you defend terry if he didn't do his utmost to try and get one of our players from heading down a dark path.Premiership aspirations or not.

Woosha seems to be getting out of this pretty cheaply(so far) IMO.

Re: Ben Cousins in trouble again

The West Coast people would have had to have known about his issues for years.
His inappropriate friends, phonr calls etc.
Very few people run from a booze bus, but a booze and drug bus (as I believe they have in Perth) may be different.

I'm sure everybody except the Weagles management would surmise why Cuz did the triathlon.

At that stage he should have been suspended by the club.

The club use Cuz as a spiritual leader. The younger players would see what goes on so they follow the leader.

One of the things about cocaine is that it makes you feel invulnerable and that you know best. Recognise that in Cuz?

We love our footy heroes and in most cases forgive them their failures.

Clubs know what goes on, and in these days of the internet and digital cameras footballers can't get away with so much. The club has a duty of care to its employees and it must ensure that they get educated abiut all things in life.

By nipping the problem in the bud, the club may have taken pain at the time but sorted a lot of future problems. Sure they got a premiership, but the long term harm done to the brand could be very costly.

Absolutely.
This behaviour goes back a lot further than July.

Simply put the Weagles administration appear to have swept the Cousins situation(and others) under the carpet in the name of success for a long time.

Clearly far earlier intervention was required. Winning a flag has been the priority over player welfare in this case.
Aah the trappings of professional sport.

Re: Ben Cousins in trouble again

To add to that I've had a friend who had a 'substance abuse problem' and you can tell in an instant when they've been using if you know the signs.
So to claim you were unaware is just a straight out load of bollocks.

I just hope none of our players are in the two strike zone if names are indeed to be published.

Re: Ben Cousins in trouble again

Judging by Red's post I think that's a given Tooheys.
