2021 Draft Thread

That's a tremendous mix, very appealing but what happens if was go into full rebuild mode? It's one of those seasons which is difficult to predict, we could be giving up a key position prospect.
Its a risk. As a club we need to be very honest about where we stand. All the media reports are hyping up for another tilt, but they count for nothing.

At the end of it we will have an elite midfielder with an extra year in the system, training with Cotch et al. The pick will not be wasted

I suppose we still have the North pick & our own second rounder, Johnson, Hobbs & Sonsie could really set us up for the next big tilt.

I hope so, but are you really prepared to give up next year's first? It's a high stakes gamble, particularly with father time catching up with Jack.
I've already outlined the scenario in which I'd give up next year's first - it involves us getting Callaghan.

I might add Andrew to that.

I nearly commented on Jack, he noticeably made his runs against weaker opposition this year.
Its a big risk, look at what happened to the pies this year.

We could mitigate it by taking Gibcus if available.
Johnson Gibcus Sonsie + xxx would be more balanced.

That sets our backline with Balta + Gibcus

thats right, i forgot to mention North's pick. We could be moving out 18 but still have pick 21.

And yes, i think we should trade it for Ward, Hobbs or Johnson. We will not get that value next year if we finish top 4

Getting a trio of elite mids in one hit would supercharge our next generation

Well. I beg to differ, after selecting Fiora over Pavlich I would have thought the club might try something different? Perhaps grab Buddy instead of Tambling? Hawthorn had inferior picks yet set the club up for a dynasty, we also knocked back a player who would be a six time All Australian. Part of effective list management is assessing the draft & establishing whether the cattle is superior to the open market, we clearly got that part horribly wrong.

1. Deledio
5. Franklin

Traded in Enright & Moloney

20. Maric (instead of Patto)

The fact we made the same mistake with JON in 2005 is not only a comedy of errors it's bordering on criminal. We missed out in a draft that was akin to shooting fish in a bucket, imagine adding Hurn or Birchall to the mix above, or even Varcoe who was part of the conversation.

Things only improved with the arrival of Frank, you couldn't get a better illustration as to the impact a different set of eyes can have on a list. We went from the laughing stock of the competition to genuine contenders in the space of 4 drafts, that is how quickly things can change with astute recruiting.
FWIW we wanted Roughead as Buddy had off field issues (turns out that was wrong but anyway) we'd made the mistake of letting that secret get out which is why Hawks grabbed Roughy knowing we'd leave Buddy on the table for them to also grab. What annoys me is the media always print articles about it around this time yet they completely ignore the Dees taking Scully & Trengove, allowing us to get Dusty at #3.

WTF is going on at the GC?? How does that happen? I just can't get my head around it. He's probably in their top 6 players and is their best experienced player. They say they want him but they come up with some *smile* strategy that leaves them exposed and the bottom team grabs him?? This is a club that is funded by the AFL (by extension the richer clubs like us) and they do stuff like this?

Seriously. Am I missing something here? Just shut the joint down. Has been nothing but a basket case since day one. Much like every other sporting club that has ever tried to make it in the location.
The hand will go out again for some more concessons soon enough

With 2 years remaining on his contract and coming off a knee injury from last season, perhaps the scuns wanted another club to take Greenwood off their hands?

Exactly right !
What also annoys me is that in the same draft the Bulldogs selected Ryan Griffen (pick 3) and Tom Williams (pick 6). Although Griffen was a half decent player (not any better than Deledio though), we never hear that they left on the table Buddy & Jordan Lewis !

Maybe an alternative is to use our 2022 first. Normally I'd be against it but it might be a chance to get two prime midfielders.
Time to be audacious.

Trade 1 in 2 parts
Part 1 trade out our 2022 first for a mid round 2021 first. Example Saints 9 for Tigers 2022 1st.
Part 2 live trade out our 26 for a 2022 3rd or 4th round. Example Saints 2022 49 for Tigers 26. This trade is made only when its time for pick 26.

Effectively both trades combined make a fair and equal trade. But its done in two parts so that it doesnt spoil the academy picks.

We could trade with either Saints or Giants, both of whom have academy picks slated to go 15-30 which will be matched with their late picks.
As they dont want to spoil these academy picks, we trade them 26 at the point of pick 26 means that it doesnt get used on the academy pick. That way they get a pick this year, plus our first next year.

End result is that we would hold 7, 9, 15, 27,28.
we could take Johnson Hobbs Sonsie xx xxx
Or Erasmus,Johnson and Sonsie.
