World Cup 2018

Columbia have always been a high risk high reward team. Their sweeper keeper Higata was nicknamed El Loco for a reason. Then if you score an goal your family homes get burned down and then you’re murdered.

I've watched that doco. Not convinced that is what happened.

I didn’t realise there was a doco. Just going on what was being said at the time. What did they think it was, drugs, *smile* off the cartel?

What a turn up.

Germany out

Lost 2-0 Korea.

If anyone hasn't seen the last 5 mins . Have a look at the comedy from the German keeper down near the other end , all their players ( including the keeper ) had pushed up. The ball was tackled off the keeper and the Koreans swept from one end to the other and GOAL no 2.

Wonderful.

Not the first German campaign to fail in Russia ;D

But seeing Son score while Ozil looked on was beautiful to see as a Spurs fan

Against France when we went down yeah. Against Denmark our goal was to not lose the match moreso than trying to win so no.

Huh? So Denmark wins over Peru, we lose our first game and you think we go into this game thinking a draw is the aim? Nonsense.

The opportunity to win presented itself in that last 20 minutes, that was the perfect time to bring him on. Why have him in the squad at all?

Most football observers, both paid and unpaid, scratched their head at that decision.

Portugal and Uruguay play each other in the round of 16, so one is going to make the quarter finals, both paying $26 to win the cup. I backed Portugal before the World Cup started so have now backed Uruguay, probably a bridge too far.

Not nonsense at all. We lose that match we're out of the WC. We draw we're still in with a slim chance. We win and we're a good chance. Which is the result that's most important? It's not that hard if you think about it.

Using "most" during a World Cup is pointless. Every man and his dog is a football observer during the World Cup. Even Spud Frawley critiques Bert's tactics.

What PRE login id were you using during the last world cup ?

Traditionally, yes for sure. Although I reckon all that stuff has got a bit cliche. Columbia is a very different place than it was 20-30 years ago. And while it's governance, civil security and standard of living is not at first world levels, it is a long way down the right path. Columbia of the mid 1990s compared to now are like night and day.

And like the country itself, their national football (soccer) team doesn't have the volatility it once did. Far more consistent performers now.

I'm with Jazzy. There is no way that was the thinking. We needed to win that game. Bert has done a great job from taking us from a rabble to an outfit that was at least matching the best teams in the world in many areas. I think it is fair criticism though that Cahill should have been the third change in game 2.

We'll agree to disagree. In a game where a loss means your whole campaign is over, you don't go for an overly attacking side. In a game where it's win or nothing, you change your approach.

Watch the champions league matches at the pointy end where there isn't much between them. The first of the two leg matches are always played differently to the second. There is a very different approach depending on if you are trying not to lose or if you are trying to win.

As for Cahill, granted he's not a very naughty boy, but he's certainly no longer the messiah.

Higuita was nuts. I still remember England playing a friendly against Colombia at Wembley. I believe he thought that the whistle had gone for a free kick as the ball was pumped towards him, would have reached him at about chest height. Instead of catching the ball he thrust his body forward and did a "scorpion kick". Totally connected with it too, but the ball was still live which made it even crazier. He was a damn good free kick taker for Colombia too, scored a few goals 3 in 68 appearances for Colombia. One of the best perms you'll ever see too.

Watching Cahill play against Peru I can now see why he didn't get a run against Denmark although I was advocating he come on at half time during the Denmark game.

I think age caught up with Jedinak in the Peru game also - he couldn't go the distance (3 games in such a short turnaround) and watch him turn and try to chase defensively in the last half - he was like a lumbering buffalo trying to get back (it may have been when they scored their second).

Cahill got us to the World Cup - we should celebrate his role in getting us there - getting us to the round of 16 was one massive step to far.

And as well as the age of our now aging stars (or ex-stars), contrast the quality of players across the entire team, compared to the class of 2006.

In 2006 we had Cahill, Viduka, Kewell, Neil, Emerton, Bresciano, Grella, Schwartzer, Moore and Kalac all playing in top tier leagues. What do we have now, pretty much just Mooy, Ryan and Leckie? Cahill, Jedinak and Jones have been top tier players, but are all aging now and playing at lower levels than they did at their peak.

Mooy and Ryan

Yes sorry, edited the post to include Ryan and Leckie. Until we have a squad where the vast majority are playing in top tiers (or at least the backbone of the side is), always going to struggle at this level.

Yep, this was never a team that could make an impact. It's why our performances against France and Denmark were so good and Bert needs to be acknowledged as a very good coach.

If anything for form in the first 2 matches reset the expectations of many people and we're now being seen as having failed.

That's the key to all this Panthera.

I think I recall at one stage we had close to 10? Someone can confirm this for me who is more knowledgeable than me. I think it was in the World Cup year we play Italy and were robbed???

Another key is junior level. Encourage attacking flair after teaching the basic skills of soccer . Had to start younger and more money needs to be poured in by the Aust Soccer Body and Govts.

Do we still have an Aust under 21?

Socceroos did better than i thought they would.

The Peru loss was dissapointing but they had a crack.

More nonsense.
