Western Australia: Shark Attack Central

SHARKS that get too close to swimmers may be killed before they get a chance to attack, under the West Australian government's response to an unprecedented spate of fatalities.

The government today announced a $6.85 million package of strategies in response to five fatal shark attacks within 10 months.

It has allocated $2 million for a new Department of Fisheries service to track, catch and, if necessary, destroy sharks in close proximity to beachgoers.

The government has also changed the circumstances under which an order may be given to kill a white shark posing an imminent threat, Fisheries Minister Norman Moore says.

"Previously the orders were used in response to an attack, but now proactive action will be taken if a large white shark presents imminent threat to people," he said.

Drum lines could also be set where a danger is posed, the state government says.

Is that like someone going into someone else's house and the govt killing off the owner so the intruder can watch the TV?

Look whats happened in Mexico where they have nearly killed off all the hammerheads in that region they now have a plague of squid that are reportedly more vicious than the sharks. The Hammerheads used to keep their numbers under control.

Read the Lorax to my son the other night. Powerful book and a number of lessons in their for humanity.

I live in a place where there are plenty of big sharks.

I reckon we just leave them to it. If you want to go out there surfing, good luck to you.

For the number of people who go out surfing, the number of deaths is pretty low.

And are we at all surprised that they have seen reason and pulled the program? Well actually yes!

"WA EPA chairman Paul Vogel said there was too much uncertainty about how the policy, which involves killing sharks longer than 3m, would affect the great white shark population."

Obvious *smile* as the program didn't trap a single white, they were almost all tigers.

Yep. Even if the drum lines don't get the same sharks responsible for the attacks the word will get around to lay off eating humans.

Australia pays heavy cost for its policies of protecting sharks

Almost everywhere one looks — the CSIRO, universities and the various departments of primary industries or fishing — one sees a higher priority given to sharks than surfers, divers or swimmers. This misanthropism springs from the common perception that humans are a blight on our planet and that a few casualties from interactions with nature are an acceptable price in the quest to save the Earth from rapacious humans. Such a deliberate lack of humanity is usually associated only with religious delusions or witchcraft. But, then, you “believe” in “saving” the environment or you don’t.

Typical government ineptitude and inefficiency. Despite the so-called pro-shark policy, Australian humans kill thousands of sharks each year while sharks only manage to kill a handful of Australian humans in the same period.

Lift your game government - let's at least get those numbers better balanced

Just to put things in perspective a little
