Not we were saying in the middle of 2016 watching him playing VFL Oldie, think we both had our finger on the delist button.

End of 2016 I had stamped him. I think from memory we used every player on our list that year at least once except him. For a pick 60-something coming out of contract with 0 games, it looked hard to find reasons to keep him.

Finishes 7th at our BnF in a premiership year 12 months later, after putting 23 games to his name.

Phenomenal turnaround. He looks every bit a star.

Not we were saying in the middle of 2016 watching him playing VFL Oldie, think we both had our finger on the delist button. The last few games of that season saved him. What he is starting to produce now is a revelation. Capable of a Lambert like leap in output in the next year or 2.
Likewise - I watched him a few times in the VFL in 2016. Did he even play a bit at half back?
But I readily admit that I didn't think much of him at the time either.
The Konrad book shows that he was identified before the start of 2017 season to play the role he ended up playing - so it was inspired planning.
It's a great story.

Reckon he does get caught a little bit, have seen him get crunched a few times trying to be too fancy, but it never stops him from getting up and trying again.

He's going alright

Given he came 8th in the b&f (the best of our small fwds) it's safe to assume you are right.

Exactly, and early signs Butts is already on the improve, with plenty of room for more, in 2018. One of the first forwards picked IMHO, especially with DRioli out.

Big year for Dan. I think it is expected he will improve. A challenge for him will be meeting expectations.

If we lose a few games and the spark in the forward half is missing, he (plus the other smalls) will be vulnerable to replacement by a dearth of smalls playing in the VFL. Obviously same goes for the others.

Certainly seems to be doing everything right in the pre-season.

Don't think I will ever forget that goal he kicked in the Grand Final. Heaven.
