Welcome to the Tiggers - Daniel Butler

Never been a Buts fan and was surprised he got a game on Saturday and like many have said he had a poor game, however watching the replay twice, he definitely had a dirty night , however his work rate and positions he got himself in the second half may just get him another game , it was a lot close to a decent game then many want to believe. I personally would never play him again and he’d be the first player I’d trade out, however the blokes that really know may just give him another game this week.

I think history will remember guys like Buts and Towner as being 'in the right place at the right time'. From their perspective, 2017 gave them the glory, the amazing experience and a highlights reel to die for. From my perspective, I'll choose to remember those heroic moments they provided, that helped us to a flag.

I’ll be the same too T_C , however if we speak in the now, Butts is done imho

The Butler is awesome in cross-traffic situations. He loves space in front of him. But when he is faced with a front on opponent it looks to me like he has target fixation and decision paralysis. I think he also had this going on in 2017 but it wasn't as obvious. There was the weird bounce of the ball tackle and the attempt to Lionel Messi his way past three Easter Island players in the granny, all of them front on confrontations.

Yeah, if Butler fully “clicked” he’d be a great line breaking winger dashing down the wing/hff but his decision making and composure too often let him down.

Butler struggles to scrap to win a hard ball or to get the ball going our way or halve a contest. He can pressure with his pace and lay a tackle or 2, but he's not a scrapper or a wrestler. George and rioli are scrappers and have 2nd and 3rd efforts in them. Butler got lucky somewhat in 2017 in that we caught teams off guard with our game style and he used his pace to take advantage of our momentum. How many joe the goose goals did he and the team kick in 2017 and early 2018? He's very straight line, tram tracks, and if he can't use his pace in space then he has very few tricks left.

Yes good one. Straight line is correct. A bit like a Matty White. Pace to burn but can't move off the straight line. Once an opposition works out plsyers like Butler it's hard for them as they don't have any more tricks up their sleeve.

I think it as as simple as him losing a yard of pace due to injury.

For his sake I hope he can recover it next year. Albeit likely to be at another club.

My take on this .......... I think he's doing what he's been told to do.

I've noticed (over last 6-12 months) that he no longer takes on the game (run/play on) but - instead - deft soccer kicks, traps the ball in and looks to create a stoppage the second the opposition possess the ball.

If I'm wrong - so be it - but - IMHO he's getting games/considered because he's doing what the coach/es have instructed him to do.

Has played his last game for the Tiges you’d think. Been superseded now. Will always be part of our 2017 Premiership side.
So for that thanks for everything Buts.

Just shows our depth that a young premiership player like buts can’t hold down a spot.

We have kept our speed but introduced more hardness around the ball (stack etc) which makes us an even more formidable team.

Butler is still decent. He's only 23. Heaps of footy in front of him. He still has speed and has been displaying this and some solid form in the VFL.

He'd be in the firsts at several other clubs right now. Probably get a game at the pies with Stephenson out and they need some speed.

His long range check side set shots are pretty good - better than a lot of players.

Last week's form does indeed warrant being dropped with so many options and depth at the moment. Having said that, it took him all game to get back to the tempo of AFL and I thought he finally got there halfway through the last quarter (too little too late in a team with depth).

Not saying he wouldn't be part of trade talks, but he's not terrible either and not necessarily 'gone'. Still has potential to bring certain things to a role (and may be learning new aspects like Caddy). Two players we missed coming into finals last year were Butler and Lambert. He's got value.

Premiership players like Butler and Townsend , along with players like Markov, Menadue and Weller May not be part of the push for an AFL premiership, however they will help our VFL team have a huge say in September, I’d also think their a huge part of the Richmond culture off field that will help the AFL 22 win the flag

Would much rather have kept Stengle but he wanted out. My only issue with Dan is he rarely uses his pace to advantage. Still young though and he could be a contributor at this level if he works harder.

My major knock on Butler is that due to his low core and upper body strength (relative to Rioli/George/Sydney/Shai) once he's tackled, he's tackled. Sort of like Brando & Bachar in that regard. Unlike them though, he doesn't work hard enough to win the easier football. Dan Jackson developed that strength in mid-career.

As you say, he's young and if get developed that strength, he would be an asset.

Exactly. I would have thought he'd be a major part of our spread from stoppages, but I've rarely seen him way out in open space or 10m in front of an opponent. Speedsters like Phillips and Stephenson from the Pies always seem to be in space or leaving opponents in their wake. And, while a player like Graham is not as fast, he actually contributes to faster ball movement. My recent memories of Dan are of him doing the cute stuff – trying to weave through congestion or toe-poke the ball past opponents. It's like he's playing some other sport.

and that just makes him look all that much slower - when we know he is (or can be) a jet.

If only he would take a leaf out of Stack's book and just burn through packs or on the spread.
