Welcome Ben Serpell - High Performance Manager

It’s a fair question.
Interested in any further intel.
No intel from me sorry. But it’s a step up for this guy. Same step that Meehan had to take. And we know how that ended. One would think the preference would be for us to bring in a high performance manager not a 2IC. But I guess some people have to start somewhere.

If you have a player who is absolutely smashing it in the VFL week after week after week... Do you promote him for a game in the firsts, or keep him in the 2nds?

Could be the go with Serpell.

Serpell v Meehan.

Serpell definitely has a greater education base. His PHD was on ACL and hamstring injuries.
Meehan has a far greater experience in Aus Rules while Serpells experience is broader including outside of sport. Rugby and Aus Rules similar enough.
Serpell seems to have a real athletic view to his footy preparation especially running mechanics and strength work to support this. Values correct technique over volume and not fatiguing the hamstrings while trying to strengthen them in the gym.

He seems like a good appointment so fingers crossed

Seems to have a decent background but I have got no idea if Ben will be great or not. I don't know what he's done or hasn't done at Geelong other than big picture results - which look good on the surface, you have to say.

What I do know, living next door to a sports scientist and having AFL club doctors and Physios as personal physicians, is that there's lots of different philosophies, approaches etc nowadays.

Let's hope Serpico has the right one ! Good luck Ben.

(Resources are critical too - a big factor at Geelong fwiw as is management control and influences, from what I'm told).

Sound good.

Data based approach makes sense to me.

Influence would be huge. No good knowing what works if you can communicate it and generate buy in to a plan.

Is it really a step up? Wasn't his time at the NSW Waratahs a similar head of role, just his first time at that level in AFL?
The question from a pure position of ignorance, i don't know the answer. Just sounds like similar responsibilities.

You are correct. He had same role at Waratahs that he does now with us.

Rob Inness was 2ic and was brilliant at Richmond then poached by Sydney as head Honcho and now poached by Carlton.
Nothing wrong with promotions when they are deserved.
Proof will be in the pudding but I am excited with a new approach.
