Week 1 --- 2019 --- The Other Finals !

Clangerfield was reallly good but the scoreline really flattered Geelong. Ablett looks finished.

Wish the commentators would stop banging on about Geelong's slow ball movement as that will become the theme for the week.

Why flattered Geelong? They won inside 50s 50 to 43, won contested, won clearances. Collingwood had the first 7 or 8 inside 50s. After that they couldn't score. Geelong kicked themselves out of the game. Neither team impressed.

Just don't think they ever really looked like kicking a big enough score. Hawkins was terrible and Rohan even worse.

Essendon’s decision to tank last week has had a huge impact on this finals series. The Magpies are the beneficiaries.

When do the finals start? Both games looked like H&A games. Both teams looked rubbish tonight

WC's decision to accidentally tank has bigger ramifications.

Pies all talking like they are in the GF.

Im calling tomorrow night a GF preview

To my eyes Collingwood clearly outplayed Geelong. Reminded me a bit of the PF last year against us. But, like last year, Collingwood should have put the opposition away but didn't. We should not have been within 20pts of Collingwood in the last quarter of the PF last year, and Geelong should not have been so close tonight. Not scoring on the last quarter must be a concern for Collingwood.

Don't get me wrong, Collingwood looked very good. They have a very good game plan and are clearly a threat.

Geelong . . . what can you say. They looked slow. They didn't want the ball. There was little teamwork, I saw one incident where two Geelong players went after the ball, overran it, and the Collingwood player out the back took possession and kicked it forward, woeful.

The other thing about Collingwood is that the way they played so well early, but weren't miles in front, reminds me of the Bob Rose era: 1970 Grand Final, 1973 Preliminary Final. Probably more I am not familiar with.

If we are playing well we can slow down the surges Collingwood have and we are far more dangerous forward. Moore was great for Collingwood in defence, but we have 2 tall forwards and he can't be in two places at once.

Clearly we need to win tomorrow night, such a pity Hawthorn beat West Coast, the way Geelong played tonight we would have flogged them.

Selwood 13-3-10 as captain in finals, one of the worst records of any skipper. Not saying it's his fault.
and in the very first piece of play he was involved in he went for the cheap free kick...get tackled raised the arms to force a head high free kick..really pathetic..i prefer dusty and his brute force than that cheap selwood garbage..geelong will never win a flag with selwood as captain...what kinda example or inspiritaion is that ??..

Geelong have some king spuds in that team. Koladashnij, Parfitt, Menegola, Miers, Atkins, O’Connor to name a few. They ain’t winning flags with those duds. Plus Ablett, Taylor, Hawkins, Selwood all past their best.

If they didn’t have such a massive home ground advantage they’d be lucky to fall into the finals.
This is a more comprehensive expose than what I was going to post....terrible bottom 6. Cost them the game.

All makes sense.

To me both the pies (who fell into the 4) and Geelong were both out of form going into this match which might explain the low scoring.

Did Geelong make the pies look fast and better than they actually are.

I couldn’t tell from the bits I saw whether the pressure or the conditions but there was a lot of fumbling out there and I assume Geelong dropped a player back for a fair bit of the game, bit defensive and they didn’t look like they believed they could actually win.

Agree - pity we didn’t get to play the cats tonight as I reckon they wouldn’t have troubled us that much.

Now it's so painfully obvious why Salty made such a fuss about getting a home final, even despite the absurdity of locking out most of Geelong's own members. Because he realised post-bye, after their early season strong form and winning streak waned, how there was no way they could go premiers without a lot going their way. He saw how deficient they really were. After the bye, it all caught up with their older players; slow, not highly skilled, running out of legs after their pre-season training wore off and their years caught up with them: Ablett, Selwood, Taylor, Dalhous.
The whole "We've earned a home final" was to try to fluke their way in a GF by winning the 1st at GMBH, then get lucky in the Prelim. There's no way this line-up can win multiple finals on the much wider expanses of the G. Just haven't enough players with the leg-speed, endurance or sharp kicking skills. Their kicking tonight was what stunned me - just so inept. They have to stop, prop and just bomb it long to a pack continually because few of their players can do much else with the ball. Kicking for goal was just hopeless.
