In addition, so many of us go along year to year and week to week and exhibit something called magical thinking. The statement "We will make finals next year..." is an example of magical thinking... a belief that merely thinking about an event in the external world can cause it to occur. It is regarded as a part of our early childhood development and is considered normal in those instances, or may reach delusional proportions when the individual maintains a firm conviction about the belief, despite evidence to the contrary!

JFK's famous quote about the Americans landing on the moon in the 1960's was a far better - and outrageous - example of magical thinking...

I hope "the process" involved telling the new coach that a renewal of his contract was in no way, shape, or form, tied to a finals appearance in his first tenure. This would free him up mentally to hack, slash, and burn his way through this list and plan and build for a real future of success. No more dud recruits, no quick fixes, no more applying bandaids to arterial bleeds. Give him the money and access to the best resources available and allow him to do the job.

I hope not. We made the finals prematurly under Frawley and look where that left us. List culling plans were thrown out the window as the thought of being Richmond's first premiership coach in upteen years stroked his ego and we are where we are because of it. We need to finally bottom out like Melbourne, Carlton, WCE etc have done.

For one, our list is far better than most people believe. Secondly now is the WORST time to bottom out with a compromised draft coming up. We need to start playing smart, tough footy and wins and finals will come.

Tanking will get us NOWHERE.

The club no doubt will aim for finals, that goes without saying. The team on the other can think they can do it but in reality the list is too weak to take a bite out of any of their opposition.

Next year we should see the start of hopefully a true rebuild, a rebuild we should of had in 2005. I expect one step back to take two steps forward.
