I reckon it was such an unusual tackle no-one really knew what to do, even the players.

The lad did really well to take care in that situation as well, could have been a really nasty injury.

I agree that Young showed great duty of care. Are you really going to argue that a professional umpire could not be expected to know what to do in this instance?

Player is tackled, tries to break tackle, can’t break tackle, makes no attempt to dispose of ball correctly. Pretty obvious.

The umpire is a professional remember. Surely he has seen similar actions once or twice during his professional career.

It’s usually better than AFL. The umpires just pay what they see. They may not see everything but if they see it, they pay it. They are not trying to keep the play flowing, or letting things go because they don’t want to give too many frees, or cracking down on certain actions or trying to implement agendas.

Half the injuries on the field occur because umpires do not always pay the first free kick they see.

Or half the frustration. Eg Prestia l;ast week, clearly held in F50, no free. Get's pinged a 50 for dissent. Would not have happened if the muppet had done his job correctly.

Loved the Tylar Young tackle on Tex Walker. Grabs his arm and refuses to let go. Walker struggles and tries to free his arm but Young just hangs on. Walker ends up swinging around like a pendulum but Young still won’t let go.

Then both players look at the ump who is still thinking about whether anyone will notice if he let’s this go and just calls play on. But they can’t play on. Walker keeps struggling, Young keeps holding. After a while the ump figures out that the tackle has been going for 15 minutes and Walker has made no attempt to dispose of the ball at any stage, in fact, he has forgotten that he still has it, he is just intent on freeing his arm. But Young won’t let go. And he is stronger.

Finally, it dawns on him that no-one can go home until he makes a decision so he pays it to Richmond. Reluctantly.

I don’t care what Neil Balme once said about umpires, it just shouldn’t be this hard to get an obvious free kick.

Walker could have dropped the ball on his foot to kick it, but chose not to. Free kick should have been called much earlier, it was ridiculous.

Does Dusty ever get such a long time to dispose of the ball?

You are correct with this one. They actually got that point just before half time because of Dion mouthing off. Yes Dion should have got a free but to double down and us losing the ball in our forward 50 is just stupidity and poor discipline. The net outcome ended up with a point they should not have got and ultimately a draw.

I've run a lot of theories around this over the years and never quite nailed it, mainly because I think there's a lot of factors at play.

There's definitely some game style factors, but when you really drill into ours our differential is often only because of a handful of players.

Nankervis is unquestionably elite at free kicks against. He goes at -.8 on career free kick differential. That doesn't sound like much but it's huge. Buddy Franklin who I believe is the all time leader in frees against goes at -.6. Tom Lynch is -.1 Dustin Martin -.5.

-.8 is the highest negative differential over a reasonable length careerI have ever seen and the second highest is -.7. The owner of that? M. Pickett.

Amazing stats on Nank. He can be pretty aggressive post the ruck contest, I suspect that is where he gives away most frees. Pickett just hits hard when he tackles

Agree to an extent, but surely there comes a time when a player says I'm sick of this bull "smile".

I've seen plenty of dubious frees paid against Dusty, and to his credit he hardly ever questions the maggot, and when he does it appears to be quite respectful. But even he has been pissed off at times.

They are not robots.

Easy from the sidelines. Of course you want your players to be disciplined, but I can accept & understand the occassional frustrated action, particularly from guys that aren't known for undisciplined actions.

Agree we have a few that should be better - Shai & Nank the main offenders.

What would be interesting would be to see what the free kick differential looks like with various combinations of players in and out. I'll have a look when I have a moment.

They're not in the cheer squad either though. They are professionals and need to conduct themselves as professionals, in the same way the cashier at the supermarket can't just abuse all the jerks they deal with, deservedly or not.

All jobs have frustrations, successful people learn to manage them.

You're assuming that it was the first time that he was held.

Dion isn't a noted whinger, so chances are that he was held a number of times previously and it all came to a head which would be entirely understandable.

Even Jason Dunstall, who was noted for his calmness and non-emotion got sh!tty at Craig Kelly for constantly harassing him back in the day.

Yes there are too many instances of Tiger players giving away dumb free kicks, but I'm sure that there is a degree that come from complete exasperation at the umpiring.
